Polymerization-induced emission and selective detection to Fe3+/ Fe2+ of triazine-containing polyureas

In this study, four polyureas with triazine moiety (PUAs) were successfully synthesized through the polymerization of triazine-containing diamine and diisocyanate. The intramolecular aggregation of triazine rings and urea groups along the macromolecular backbone gives PUAs a significant polymerization-induced emission (PIE). Among the four PUAs, PUA-LP shows a significant fluorescent emission at 450 nm, compared to non/weak fluorescent 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine and L-Lysine diisocyanate ethyl ester monomers. Additionally, the external factors such as solution concentration, excitation wavelength, and precipitants also play a crucial role in the fluorescence of PUAs. As expected, PUA-LP can selectively recognize and detect Fe3+/Fe2+ ions even in the presence of 12 other metal ions and 10 anions. The limit of detection of PUA-LP to Fe3+/Fe2+ is as low as 1.02 μM (0.06 mg/L) and 0.86 μM (0.05 mg/L), respectively, and far below 0.3 mg/L of the allowable national standard for drinking water by WHO. Furthermore, the quenching mechanism of Fe3+/Fe2+ to PUA-LP is attributed to static quenching caused by the coordination of Fe3+/Fe2+ ions with a coordination ratio of 2:1. Based on PIE, the fluorescent PUA-LP was made into an observable and portable testing paper for detecting Fe3+/Fe2+ ions. Finally, we measured the recovery rate of the actual tap water samples and compared the performance of PIE-active PUA-LP with the other reported fluorescent probes to Fe3+/Fe2+ ions.

Light-responsive organic polaritons from first principles

Controlling the optical properties of light-responsive organic molecules is essential for their application in photonics. We demonstrate how light-responsive organic polaritons formed inside an optical cavity can be used to modify these properties based on first principles. Specifically, we study the excited state properties of the trans-azobenzene molecule and the free base tetraphenyl porphyrin (H2TPP) molecule under weak to strong light-matter coupling. Our results show that the cavity can modulate the dispersion and absorption properties of organic molecules. Compared to the case outside the cavity, the anomalous dispersion of the trans-azobenzene molecule inside the cavity is suppressed and this suppression decreases with increasing coupling strength, showing the potential of strong light-matter coupling in manipulating the optical dipole trap of organic molecules. Moreover, by adjusting the cavity parameters to tune the strength of the light-matter coupling, we achieve free switching between symmetric Lorentz and asymmetric Fano line shapes for H2TPP polaritonic excitations. During the switching between these spectral features, we also find that the cavity can be used to control the spontaneous radiation of organic molecules via the Purcell effect. These findings provide a new pathway to manipulate the optical properties of light-responsive organic molecules.

Cooperative Coupling of Oxidative Organic Synthesis and Hydrogen Production over Semiconductor-Based Photocatalysts

Merging hydrogen (H₂) evolution with oxidative organic synthesis in a semiconductor-mediated photoredox reaction is extremely attractive because the clean H₂ fuel and high-value chemicals can be coproduced under mild conditions using light as the sole energy input. Following this dual-functional photocatalytic strategy, a dreamlike reaction pathway for constructing C-C/C-X (X = C, N, O, S) bonds from abundant and readily available X-H bond-containing compounds with concomitant release of H₂ can be readily fulfilled without the need of external chemical reagents, thus offering a green and fascinating organic synthetic strategy. In this review, we begin by presenting a concise overview on the general background of traditional photocatalytic H₂ production and then focus on the fundamental principles of cooperative photoredox coupling of selective organic synthesis and H₂ production by simultaneous utilization of photoexcited electrons and holes over semiconductor-based catalysts to meet the economic and sustainability goal. Thereafter, we put dedicated emphasis on recent key progress of cooperative photoredox coupling of H₂ production and various selective organic transformations, including selective alcohol oxidation, selective methane conversion, amines oxidative coupling, oxidative cross-coupling, cyclic alkanes dehydrogenation, reforming of lignocellulosic biomass, and so on. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives in this flourishing area have been critically discussed. It is anticipated that this review will provide enlightening guidance on the rational design of such dual-functional photoredox reaction system, thereby stimulating the development of economical and environmentally benign solar fuel generation and organic synthesis of value-added fine chemicals.

Comparison of platinum photodeposition processes on two types of titanium dioxide photocatalysts

The photodeposition method is useful for the preparation of metal-loaded photocatalysts, by which the metal precursors are adsorbed on the photocatalyst surface and reduced by photoexcited electrons to typically form metallic nanoparticles. In the present study, the photodeposition process of Pt nanoparticles was investigated on anatase and rutile TiO2 photocatalysts. It was found that on the anatase surface, only some of the Pt4+ precursors were first adsorbed in an adsorption equilibrium and reduced to form a smaller number of initial metal species; then, they functioned as electron receivers to reduce the remaining precursors on their metallic surfaces and become larger particles. In contrast, the rutile surface can adsorb most of the precursors and quickly reduce them upon photoirradiation to form nanoparticles, giving a larger number of small nanoparticles. As a result, the Pt-loaded rutile photocatalyst exhibited higher activity in hydrogen evolution from an aqueous methanol solution than the Pt-loaded anatase photocatalyst.

Platinum Cocatalyst Loaded on Calcium Titanate Photocatalyst for Water Splitting in a Flow of Water Vapor

In water splitting by using heterogeneous photocatalysts, the use of a suitable cocatalyst has been recognized as one of the key factors in enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Although platinum is a representative cocatalyst for many heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions, it has not been used for photocatalytic water splitting, owing to its high catalytic activity for the reverse reaction of water splitting. In the present study, platinum nanoparticles were loaded as a cocatalyst on a calcium titanate photocatalyst by a conventional impregnation method and a photodeposition method and examined for photocatalytic water splitting in a flow of water vapor. Platinum nanoparticles loaded by the impregnation method were found to retain the oxidized form on the calcium titanate photocatalyst, even under photoirradiation, and promoted hydrogen and oxygen production by photocatalytic water vapor splitting without promoting the reverse reaction.

Direct cross-coupling between alkenes and tetrahydrofuran with a platinum-loaded titanium oxide photocatalyst

A Pt-loaded TiO₂ photocatalyst successfully catalyzed the direct cross-coupling between various alkenes and tetrahydrofuran (THF) without any additional oxidizing agent.

Novel blended catalysts consisting of a TiO2 photocatalyst and an Al2O3 supported Pd–Au bimetallic catalyst for direct dehydrogenative cross-coupling between arenes and tetrahydrofuran

Dehydrogenative cross-coupling (DCC) is a clean methodology to make C–C bonds by using abundant C–H bonds. The blended catalyst, developed in this study, consists of a TiO₂ photocatalyst and an Al₂O₃ supported Pd–Au bimetallic catalyst and shows superior activity to the conventional TiO₂ photocatalyst loaded with the corresponding metal co-catalyst for the direct DCC between various arenes and tetrahydrofuran, with concomitant evolution of hydrogen gas. The reactions were done under mild conditions without consuming any oxidising agent or other additional chemicals. This new approach of separating the photocatalyst and the metal catalyst parts allows their independent modification to improve the overall catalytic performance.

A TiO₂ photocatalyst physically mixed with a supported Pd–Au bimetallic catalyst is more efficient than Pd loaded TiO₂ sample for the photocatalytic DCC between arene and THF.
