Abstract
In this study, we present a comprehensive photophysical investigation of ESIPT-reactive benzazole derivatives in both solution and the solid state. These derivatives incorporate different chalcogen atoms (O, S, and Se) into their structures, and we explore how these variations impact their electronic properties in both ground and excited states. Changes in the UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra were analyzed and correlated with the chalcogen atom and solvent polarity. In general, the spectral band of the benzazole derivative containing selenium was redshifted in both the ground and excited states compared to that of its oxygen and sulfur counterparts. Furthermore, we observed that the solvent played a distinctive role in influencing the ESIPT process within these compounds, underscoring once again the significant influence of the chalcogen atom on their photophysical behavior. Theoretical calculations provided a deeper understanding of the molecular dynamics, electronic structures, and photophysical properties of these compounds. These calculations highlighted the effect of chalcogen atoms on the molecular geometry, absorption and emission characteristics, and intramolecular hydrogen bonding, revealing intricate details of the ESIPT mechanism. The integration of experimental and computational data offers a detailed view of the structural and electronic factors governing the photophysical behavior of benzazole derivatives.

Abstract
This study describes the synthesis of new pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) derivatives obtained in good yields from the reaction between pyromellitic dianhydride and aminobenzazoles reactive to proton-transfer in the excited state (ESIPT). In this investigation, a non-ESIPT PMDI was also prepared for comparison. These compounds presented absorption maxima in the ultraviolet region attributed to the allowed 1π-π* electronic transitions. Redshifted absorptions were observed for the ESIPT compounds (3b-3c) due to their π-extended conjugation if compared to the non-ESIPT dye (3a). The compounds presented fluorescence emissions between 300 and 600 nm, dependent on the solvent polarity and their chemical structures. While compound 3a presents a single emission, a dual fluorescence could be observed for compounds 3b-3c. As expected for ESIPT compounds, the emission at higher energies could be related to the excited enol conformer (E*), and the emission with a large Stokes shift was attributed to the keto tautomer (K*). All compounds presented fluorescence emission in the solid state, whereas the ESIPT derivatives presented redshifted emissions with a large Stokes shift, as expected. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to investigate the electrochemical properties of these compounds. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels were estimated at -5.40 to -5.00 eV and -2.84 to -2.62 eV, and good thermal stability (Td > 150 °C) was observed. Quantum chemical calculationsusingTD-DFT and DFT were performed to investigate the electronic and photophysical features of the molecules.

Abstract
Photoacids are aromatic acids that exhibit significantly different acidities when they are electronically excited. Three experimental methods have been extensively used to determine the photoacidity, : fluorescence titration, the Förster cycle, and time-resolved experiments. However, the photoacidities determined by these experimental methods are not consistent. In this work, we used a theoretical method to evaluate the reliability of experimentally determined values. In particular, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were used to obtain the changes in Gibbs free energy for acid dissociation reactions which are directly related to values. The Förster cycle, which is frequently used to experimentally determine the photoacidity due to its simplicity, yielded inconsistent results depending on how the transition energy was defined. We evaluated six empirical parameters extracted from the absorption and emission spectra of acidic and basic species of photoacids to adequately define the transition energy in the Förster cycle. And we found that the values obtained using the optical bandgap as the transition energy in the Förster cycle were in the best agreement with the results of quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
In this study, the interactions of ESIPT fluorescent lipophile-based benzazoles with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied and their binding affinity was evaluated. In phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution these compounds produce absorption maxima in the UV region and a main fluorescence emission with a large Stokes shift in the blue–green regions due to a proton transfer process in the excited state. The interactions of the benzazoles with BSA were studied using UV-Vis absorption and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The observed spectral quenching of BSA indicates that these compounds could bind to BSA through a strong binding affinity afforded by a static quenching mechanism (Kq~1012 L·mol−1·s−1). The docking simulations indicate that compounds 13 and 16 bind closely to Trp134 in domain I, adopting similar binding poses and interactions. On the other hand, compounds 12, 14, 15, and 17 were bound between domains I and III and did not directly interact with Trp134.

Abstract
The photophysical properties and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes for 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-chloromethylthiazole (1), 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-phenylthiazole (2), 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-hydroxymethyl-thiazole (3) were studied at the TD-B3PW91/6-31 + G(d, p)/IEFPCM level. The structures of 1-3 were fully optimized and the corresponding structural parameters, infrared spectra and electron densities in the ground (S0) and the first excited (S1) states were analyzed. The calculated absorption and fluorescence wavelengths of 1-3 reproduced the experimental data. The potential energy curves of the S0 and S1 states were built and the ESIPT processes were clarified. Our results showed that the intramolecular H-bonds of 3 and 2 in the S1 state were the strongest and the weakest, respectively, and then the ESIPT potential barriers of 3 and 2 were the lowest and highest, respectively. Among the three phenol-thiazole type probes, the compound 2 with phenyl ring group at the 4 position of the thiazole ring had the larger π-conjugation, and had the higher ESIPT potential barrier at the same time. The corresponding compound 1 and 3 with CH2Cl and CH2OH had the lower ESIPT barrier.

Abstract
In this perspective review article, we have attempted to bring out the important current trends of research in the areas of supramolecular and suprabiomolecular photochemistry. Since the spans of the subject areas are very vast, it is impossible to cover all the aspects within the limited space of this review article. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to assimilate the basic understanding of how supramolecular interactions can significantly change the photophysical and other related physiochemical properties of chromophoric dyes and drugs, which have enormous academic and practical implications. We have discussed with reference to relevant chemical systems where supramolecularly assisted modulations in the properties of chromophoric dyes and drugs can be used or have already been used in different areas like sensing, dye/drug stabilization, drug delivery, functional materials, and aqueous dye laser systems. In supramolecular assemblies, along with their conventional photophysical properties, the acid-base properties of prototropic dyes, as well as the excited state prototautomerization and related proton transfer behavior of proton donor/acceptor dye molecules, are also largely modulated due to supramolecular interactions, which are often reflected very explicitly through changes in their absorption and fluorescence characteristics, providing us many useful insights into these chemical systems and bringing out intriguing applications of such changes in different applied areas. Another interesting research area in supramolecular photochemistry is the excitation energy transfer from the donor to acceptor moieties in self-assembled systems which have immense importance in light harvesting applications, mimicking natural photosynthetic systems. In this review article, we have discussed varieties of these aspects, highlighting their academic and applied implications. We have tried to emphasize the progress made so far and thus to bring out future research perspectives in the subject areas concerned, which are anticipated to find many useful applications in areas like sensors, catalysis, electronic devices, pharmaceuticals, drug formulations, nanomedicine, light harvesting, and smart materials.

Abstract
Benzothiazole derivatives were used as models to study the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from an experimental and theoretical point of view. The experimental electronic and vibrational results were compared with a comprehensive selection of state-of-the-art computational methods in a workflow approach. The latter were performed based on modern techniques, such as DLPNO-CCSD(T), which gives the reference energies and current methodologies for ESIPT analysis, such as molecular dynamics and charge density difference testing. The theoretical vibrational results were focused on the stretch vibrational-mode of the hydroxyl group, which indicated a large increase in the intramolecular hydrogen bond strength, which facilitates the ESIPT process. Theoretically, the optimization of a large number of molecules shows that π-stacking plays a fundamental role in benzothiazole stabilization, with a remarkably strong intramolecular hydrogen bond. The potential energy surface of the ESIPT reactive benzothiazole (4HBS) has a clear transition state where ESIPT is easily observed with a large difference in energy between the enol and keto tautomer. Additionally, molecular dynamics showed that the ESIPT process occurs very fast. The tautomer appears around 8.7 fs and the enolic form is regenerated in just 24 fs, closing the Förster cycle. The calculated Stokes shift could be related to the ESIPT process and the experimental solid-state emission spectrum matched almost perfectly with the theoretical one. In contrast, for the non-ESIPT benzothiazole (4HBSN), the agreement between theory and experiment was limited, probably due to intermolecular interaction effects that are not considered in these calculations.

Abstract
In this work, we investigated for the first time morin in MeOH at different pH values by picosecond time-resolved fluorescence. We identified the two species responsible for the fluorescence at low and high pH. The solvated morin-solvent hydrogen-bonded complex has been experimentally observed for the first time. We give also the typical fluorescence spectra as well as the fluorescence lifetimes of the probable emitting species. In this work we put forward new insights concerning the contribution of free morin to the fluorescence. We hope that these new data improve the accuracy of the interpretation of the cation:morin complexes titration using fluorescence signal.

Abstract
Multivariate Curve Resolution with Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) was for the first time successfully used to evaluate an intricate photophysical behavior, where deprotonation on the electronic ground state (S0), intra and intermolecular proton transfer processes (ESPT and ESIPT) on the electronic excited state (S1) can simultaneously be presented. In this sense, the organic dye 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) was used as a proof-of-concept model, where MCR-ALS showed to be a powerful tool for discriminate chemical reactions that occur concomitantly on different potential energy surfaces, which include photochemical reactions. As a result, the chemometric method showed to be a straightforward approach for the determination of the acidic strengths of those equilibria were estimated as 8.61 and 1.11 to hydroxyl deprotonation on electronic ground and excited states, respectively.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized a spiropyran containing an electron-withdrawing carboxyl group in good yield by condensation of an aromatic aldehyde with enamine indole. The spiropyran absorbed at the ultraviolet region with a maximum at approximately 300 nm, demonstrating slight solvatochromism (~3 nm). A fluorescent emission around 360 nm was observed with a higher solvatochromic effect (~12 nm), indicating higher electronic delocalization in the excited state. The photoreversibility of the open and closed forms of spiropyran excited at 300 nm and 365 nm was not observed, indicating that the absence of the nitro group plays a fundamental role in this equilibrium. Theoretical calculations were also applied for better understanding the photophysics of these compounds. Electrochemical characterization revealed the values of the HOMO and LUMO energy levels at −1.89 eV (electron affinity) and −5.61 eV (ionization potential), respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis showed excellent thermal stability of the spiropyran, with 5% weight loss at approximately 250 °C. Finally, the photophysical features were used to explore the interaction of spiropyran with bovine serum albumin in a phosphate buffer solution, where a significant suppression mechanism was observed.

The absorption and fluorescence spectra were calculated, and the potential energy curves in both S0 and S1 states were constructed. Moreover, the effects of different substituents on the ESIPT mechanism of 4R-o-LHBDI (R: OH, NH2, CN, NO2, CF3) were studied. The results indicate that ESIPT in the 4R-o-LHBDI is a little harder to proceed than that in o-LHBDI since the ESIPT barrier of 4R-o-LHBDI is slightly bigger than that value of o-LHBDI. When the substituent has stronger electron-withdrawing ability or weaker electron-donating ability, the ESIPT process has the smaller potential barrier. Graphical abstract.
