Circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence of ligand-protected molecular metal clusters: insights into structure-chiroptical property relationships

Molecular noble metal clusters are an emerging class of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) nanomaterials. Many of the ligand-protected metal clusters exhibit discrete electronic absorption bands, which are assigned to their structural components such as metal core, ligands and metal-ligand interfaces. This implies the suitability of the chiroptical spectroscopic approach to unravel the structure-chiroptical property relationships in molecular metal clusters. Due to the tremendous developments in computational methods for investigating chiroptical properties, along with circular dichroism (CD) and CPL spectroscopy, understanding of the structure-chiroptical properties of these clusters is rapidly progressing. This review discusses various strategies such as the use of chiral ligands, metal atom substitution, ligand exchange, co-crystallization with chiral ligands, etc., for inducing and enhancing the CPL of such metal clusters. This review demonstrates the potential of combined CD-CPL spectroscopic investigations and theoretical calculations to unravel the origins of photoluminescence and CPL activity of chiral metal clusters.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Thiophene-Bridged Macrocyclic pseudo-meta [2.2]Paracyclophanes

Chiral organic molecules possessing high quantum yields, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence values have great potential as optically active materials for future applications. Recently, the identification of a promising class of inherently chiral compounds was reported, namely macrocyclic 1,3-butadiyne-linked pseudo-meta[2.2]paracyclophanes, displaying high circular dichroism and related gabs values albeit modest quantum yields. Increasing the quantum yields in an attempt to get bright circularly polarized light emitters, the high-yielding heterocyclization of those 1,3-butadiyne bridges resulting in macrocyclic 2,5-thienyls-linked pseudo-meta [2.2]paracyclophanes is herein described. The chiroptical properties of both, the previously reported 1,3-butadiyne, and the novel 2,5-thienyl bridged macrocycles of various sizes, are experimentally recorded, and theoretically described using density-functional theory.

Integrated Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Measurements

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) systems have a plethora of potential applications owing to their interesting excited-state properties. However, the progress in developing new chiral luminescence systems is significantly hindered by the lack of available instrumentation for the broader chemistry and materials science community to perform routine, reproducible measurements of chiral spectroscopies. In this work, we present data from an easy-to-use custom-built instrument based on a Jasco circular dichroism (CD) spectropolarimeter coupled with a CPL emission monochromator (CD/CPL hybrid system). The hybrid system measures CPL, fluorescence, CD, and absorbance on the same part of the sample without the need to move between the CD and CPL measurements. The instrument uses a xenon arc lamp as the light source, enabling a wide range of excitation wavelengths to support flexible development of new molecules and materials. Data obtained and presented for camphor, ruthenium metal complexes, the peptide gramicidin, and a DNA-ligand (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole, DAPI) system in this work highlight the ease of use and reproducibility of the results. The g-factors for CD and CPL obtained for the different compounds are shown to be the same for isolated transitions and some examples of how to use variations of g-factors with wavelength are demonstrated. The reliable and excellent benchmark results obtained from a custom-built commercial wavelength scanning CPL/CD hybrid instrument open up new avenues for the broader chemical and materials science community to intensify research on chiral luminescent systems.

Structurally Diverse Pyrene-decorated Planar Chiral [2,2]Paracyclophanes with Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence between Monomer and Excimer

We reported the synthesis of a series of structurally diverse CPL-active molecules, in which pyrene units were installed to chiral pm/po-[2,2]PCP scaffolds either with or without a triple bond spacer for pm/po-PCP-P1 and pm/po-PCP-P2, respectively. The X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed that these pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives exhibited diverse structures and crystal packings in the solid phases. The pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives exhibit various (chir)optical properties in organic solutions, depending on their respective structures. In a mixture of dioxane and water, pm/po-PCP-P1 emit green excimer fluorescence, whereas pm/po-PCP-P2 emit blue one. The chiroptical investigation demonstrated that Rp-pm-PCP-P1 and Rp-pm-PCP-P2 exhibited completely opposite CD and CPL signals even they possess the same chiral Rp-[2,2]PCP core. The same argument also holds for other chiral pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives. The theoretical calculation revealed that these unusual phenomena were attributed to different orientation between transition electric dipole moments and the magnetic dipole moments originating from the presence or absence of a triple bond spacer. These pyrene-based [2,2]PCP derivatives display various colours and fluorescence emissions in the solid state and PMMA films, possibly due to the different packings as observed in the crystal structure. Moreover, these compounds also can interact with perylene diimide through π-π interactions, leading to near-white fluorescence.

Ultrafast electron dynamics in excited states of conjugated thiophene-fluorene organic polymer (pF8T2) thin films

The electronic states of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-alt-bithiophene) pF8T2 on H/Si(100) substrates, prototypical for organic photovoltaics, were investigated by ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy and by time-resolved fluorescence studies. Occupied and unoccupied electronic states were analysed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), static and dynamic femtosecond two-photon photoemission (2PPE), and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). Time-resolved measurements allow assessment of population lifetimes of intermediate states. The combination of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and fluorescence excitation allows following the electronic dynamics in excited states from the femtosecond to the nanosecond time scale. For this prototypical material the electron kinetic energy resolved lifetimes range from about a few tens of femtoseconds up to hundreds of picoseconds. After annealing these types of organic thin films the efficiency of organic solar cells usually increases. We show that annealing does not influence the initial ultrafast charge generation processes, but the long-lived states. However, the nanosecond scale fluorescence lifetimes measured by TCSPC are prolonged after annealing, which therefore is identified as the cause of a greater exciton diffusion range and thus is beneficial for charge carrier extraction.

Strong Coupling of Chiral Frenkel Exciton for Intense, Bisignate Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We show that chiral Frenkel excitons yield intense circularly polarized luminescence with an intrinsic dissymmetry factor in emission g_lum as high as 0.08. This outstanding value is measured through thin films of cyanine J-aggregates that form twisted bundles. Our measurements, obtained by a Mueller polarization analysis, are artifact-free and reveal a quasi-perfect correlation between the dissymmetry factors in absorption, g_abs , and in emission g_lum . We interpret the bisignate dissymmetry factors as the signature of a strong coupling between chiral Frenkel excitons longitudinally excited along the bundles. We further resolve by polarimetry analysis the split in energy between the excited states with a Davydov splitting as small as 28 meV. We finally show the anti-Kasha nature of the chiral emission bands with opposite optical chirality. These mirror-imaged emissive chiroptical features emerge from the structural rigidity of the bundles that preserves the ground- and excited-state chirality.

Efficient chirality transfer from chiral amines to oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s to fabricate chiroptical materials

Oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV)-based luminophores show versatile luminescence properties based on their structural and packing arrangements, and however have seldomly been utilized in fabricating chiroptical materials. Here, we report a co-assembly strategy to introduce hydrophilic chiral amines into OPV-appended carboxylic acids via salt-bridge type hydrogen bonds. The coassembly in aqueous media allows for efficient chirality transfer with chiroptical activities. The participation of chiral amines altered the aromatic stacking from H- to J-type, which greatly enhanced the luminescence of the OPV compounds and facilitated the emergence of Cotton effects as well as circularly polarized luminescence. This work demonstrates the successful coassembly of OPV luminophores into chiral assemblies with tunable optical activity, showing potential for chiroptical application in optical chirality sensing.

CPL on/off control of an assembled system by water soluble macrocyclic chiral sources with planar chirality

Herein, we report the synthesis and planar chiral properties of a pair of water-soluble cationic pillar[5]arenes with stereogenic carbons. Interestingly, although units of the molecules were rotatable, only one planar chiral diastereomer existed in water in both cases. As a new type of chiral source, these molecules transmitted chiral information from the planar chiral cavities to the assembly of a water-soluble extended π-conjugated compound, affording circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The chirality transfer process and resulting CPL were extremely sensitive to the feed ratio of the chiral pillar[5]arenes owing to the combined action of their planar chirality, bulkiness, and strong binding properties. When a limited amount of chiral source was added, further assembly of the extended π-conjugated compound into helical fibers with CPL was triggered. Unexpectedly, larger amounts of chiral source destroyed the helical fiber assemblies, resulting in elimination of the chirality and CPL properties from the assembled structures.

Readily obtained pillar[5]arenes with pure planar chirality enabled CPL on/off control of an assembled system by varying the feed ratio.

Cyclodextrins with Multiple Pyrenyl Groups: An Approach to Organic Molecules Exhibiting Bright Excimer Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted much attention because of its potential for electronic and biological applications. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to organic molecules exhibiting bright CPL by combining a chiral cyclic molecular scaffold and multiple excimer-enabling moieties. An a-cyclodextrin ( CyD ) scaffold was modified with six pyrenyl groups to obtain pyrene-cyclodextrins ( PCD s) in a one-step synthesis from commercially available compounds. The PCDs exhibited high molar extinction coefficients (ε ~ 10 5 M -1 cm -1 ), polarized emission with a good dissymmetry factor (| g lum | ~ 10 -2 ), and quantum yield ( Φ f ~ 0.5). Owing to the excellent photophysical properties of the PCDs, the circularly polarized luminescence brightness ( B CPL ) reached 340 M -1 cm -1 . Comprehensive photophysical and chiroptical studies of the PCD s with only five pyrene units and with linkers of various lengths connecting the CyD with the pyrene units revealed that the formation of a pyrene excimer in a spatially crowded environment is crucial for CPL anisotropy. This study paves the way for the development of bright CPL organic molecules.

Red circularly polarized luminescence from intramolecular excimers restricted by chiral aromatic foldamers

Aromatic oligoamide foldamers are highlighted as a verstile paltform for developing single-handed foldamers with two aromatic acetenyl groups at the same side. The foldamers with pyrene acetenyl units exhibit red excimer emissions, which were circularly polarized and show interesting circularly polarized luminescence properties with high CPL brightness B_CPL up to 109.8 M^-1.cm^-1. The red excimer CPL was attributed to the extended conjugations and the spatial restriction of pyrene units at the same side of foldamers.

Chiral polymer hosts for circularly polarized electroluminescence devices

Polymer electroluminescence devices producing circularly polarized luminescence (CP PLEDs) have valuable photonic applications. The fabrication of a CP PLED requires a polymer host that provides the appropriate chiral environment around the emitting dopant. However, chemical strategies for the design of chiral polymer hosts remain underdeveloped. We have developed new polymer hosts for CP PLED applications. These polymers were prepared through a free-radical polymerization of 3-vinylcarbazole with a chiral N-alkyl unit. This chiral unit forces the carbazole repeat units to form mutually helical half-sandwich conformers with preferred (P)-helical sense along the polymer main chain. Electronic circular dichroism measurements demonstrate the occurrence of chirality transfer from chiral monomers to achiral monomers during chain growth. The (P)-helical-sense-enriched polymer interacts diastereoselectively with an enantiomeric pair of new phosphorescent (R)- and (S)-dopants. The magnitude of the Kuhn dissymmetry factor (g_abs) for the (P)-helically-enriched polymer film doped with the (R)-dopant was found to be one order of magnitude higher than that of the film doped with the (S)-dopant. Photoluminescence dissymmetry factors (g_PL) of the order of 10⁻³ were recorded for the doped films, but the magnitude of diastereomeric enhancement decreased to that of g_abs. The chiral polymer host permits faster energy transfer to the phosphorescent dopants than the achiral polymer host. Our photophysical and morphological investigations indicate that the acceleration in the chiral polymer host is due to its longer Förster radius and improved compatibility with the dopants. Finally, multilayer CP PLEDs were fabricated and evaluated. Devices based on the chiral polymer host with the (R)- and (S)-dopants exhibit electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (g_EL) of 1.09 × 10⁻⁴ and −1.02 × 10⁻⁴ at a wavelength of 540 nm, respectively. Although challenges remain in the development of polymer hosts for CP PLEDs, our research demonstrates that chiroptical performances can be amplified by using chiral polymer hosts.

Biased Symmetry Breaking and Chiral Control by Self-Replicating in Achiral Tetradentate Platinum (II) Complexes

Obtaining homochirality from biased symmetry-breaking of self-assembly in achiral molecules remains a great challenge due to the lack of ingenious strategies and controlling their handedness. Here, we report the first case of biased symmetry breaking from achiral platinum (II) liquid crystals which self-organize into an enantiomerically enriched single domain without selection of handedness in twist grain boundary TGB ^[ *^] phase. Most importantly, the chiral control of self-organization can be achieved by using above the homochiral liquid crystal films with determined handedness (P or M) as a template. Moreover, benefiting from self-assembled superhelix, these complexes exhibit prominent circularly polarized luminescence with high |g_lum | up to 3.4×10^-3 in the TGB ^[ *^] mesophase. This work paves a neoteric avenue for the development of chiral self-assemblies from achiral molecules.

Resonance in Chirogenesis and Photochirogenesis: Colloidal Polymers Meet Chiral Optofluidics

Metastable colloids made of crystalline and/or non-crystalline matters render abilities of photonic resonators susceptible to chiral chemical and circularly polarized light sources. By assuming that μm-size colloids and co-colloids consisting of π- and/or σ-conjugated polymers dispersed into an optofluidic medium are artificial models of open-flow, non-equilibrium coacervates, we showcase experimentally resonance effects in chirogenesis and photochirogenesis, revealed by gigantic boosted chiroptical signals as circular dichroism (CD), optical rotation dispersion, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and CPL excitation (CPLE) spectral datasets. The resonance in chirogenesis occurs at very specific refractive indices (RIs) of the surrounding medium. The chirogenesis is susceptible to the nature of the optically active optofluidic medium. Moreover, upon an excitation-wavelength-dependent circularly polarized (CP) light source, a fully controlled absolute photochirogenesis, which includes all chiroptical generation, inversion, erase, switching, and short-/long-lived memories, is possible when the colloidal non-photochromic and photochromic polymers are dispersed in an achiral optofluidic medium with a tuned RI. The hand of the CP light source is not a determining factor for the product chirality. These results are associated with my experience concerning amphiphilic polymerizable colloids, in which, four decades ago, allowed proposing a perspective that colloids are connectable to light, polymers, helix, coacervates, and panspermia hypotheses, nuclear physics, biology, radioisotopes, homochirality question, first life, and cosmology.

Blue circularly polarized luminescent amorphous molecules with single-handed propeller chirality induced by circularly polarized light irradiation

Single-handed propeller structure was induced by circularly polarized light irradiation to three molecules with a flat core moiety and twisted periphery groups (wings). The molecules exhibited efficient blue circularly polarized luminescence.

Chirogenesis and Pfeiffer Effect in Optically Inactive EuIII and TbIII Tris(β-diketonate) Upon Intermolecular Chirality Transfer From Poly- and Monosaccharide Alkyl Esters and α-Pinene: Emerging Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) and Circular Dichroism (CD)

We report emerging circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) at 4f-4f transitions when lanthanide (Eu^III and Tb^III) tris(β-diketonate) embedded to cellulose triacetate (CTA), cellulose acetate butyrate (CABu), D-/L-glucose pentamethyl esters (D-/L-Glu), and D-/L-arabinose tetramethyl esters (D-/L-Ara) are in film states. Herein, 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedionate (fod) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (dpm) were chosen as the β-diketonates. The g_lum value of Eu(fod)₃ in CABu are +0.0671 at 593 nm (⁵D0→7F₁) and −0.0059 at 613 nm (⁵D0→7F₂), respectively, while those in CTA are +0.0463 and −0.0040 at these transitions, respectively. The g_lum value of Tb(fod)₃ in CABu are −0.0029 at 490 nm (⁵D4→7F₆), +0.0078 at 540 nm (⁵D4→7F₅), and −0.0018 at 552 nm (⁵D4→7F₅), respectively, while those in CTA are −0.0053, +0.0037, and −0.0059 at these transitions, respectively. D-/L-Glu and D-/L-Ara induced weaker g_lum values at 4f-4f transitions of Eu(fod)₃, Tb(fod)₃, and Tb(dpm)₃. For comparison, Tb(dpm)₃ in α-pinene showed clear CPL characteristics, though Eu(dpm)₃ did not. A surplus charge neutralization hypothesis was applied to the origin of attractive intermolecular interactions between the ligands and saccharides. This idea was supported from the concomitant opposite tendency in upfield ¹⁹F-NMR and downfield ¹H-NMR chemical shifts of Eu(fod)₃ and the opposite Mulliken charges between F-C bonds (fod) and H-C bonds (CTA and D-/L-Glu). An analysis of CPL excitation (CPLE) and CPL spectra suggests that (+)- and (–)-sign CPL signals of Eu^III and Tb^III at different 4f-4f transitions in the visible region are the same with the (+)-and (–)-sign exhibited by CPLE bands at high energy levels of Eu^III and Tb^III in the near-UV region.

CPL Spectra of Camphor Derivatives in Solution by an Integrated QM/MD Approach

We extend a recently proposed computational strategy for the simulation of absorption spectra of semi-rigid molecular systems in condensed phases to the emission spectra of flexible chromophores. As a case study, we have chosen the CPL spectrum of camphor in methanol solution, which shows a well-defined bisignate shape. The first step of our approach is the quantum mechanical computation of reference spectra including vibrational averaging effects and taking bulk solvent effects into account by means of the polarizable continuum model. In the present case, the large amplitude inversion mode is explicitly treated by a numerical approach, whereas the other small-amplitude vibrational modes are taken into account within the harmonic approximation. Next, the snapshots of classical molecular dynamics computations are clusterized and one representative configuration from each cluster is used to compute a reference spectrum. In the present case, different clusters correspond to the two stable conformers of camphor in the S1 excited electronic state and, for each of them, to different numbers of strong solute-solvent hydrogen bonds. Finally, local fluctuation effects within each cluster are taken into account by means of the perturbed matrix model. The overall procedure leads to good agreement with experiment for absorption and emission spectra together with their chiral counterparts, thus allowing to analyze the role of different effects (stereo-electronic, vibrational, environmental) in tuning the overall experimental spectra.

Sign inversions of circularly polarized luminescence for helical compounds by chemically fine-tuning operations

Sign inversions of CPL by fine-tuning operations on structures of helical compounds were realized by one step-oxidation or TPA-modification.

Inversion of Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Nanofibrous Hydrogels through Co-assembly with Achiral Coumarin Derivatives

Control over the handedness of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in supramolecular gels is of special significance in biology and optoelectronics; however, it still remains a great challenge to precisely and efficiently regulate the chirality of CPL. Herein, a chiral phenylalanine-derived hydrogelator and achiral coumarin derivatives can co-assemble into nanofibrous hydrogels with controllable chirality, and the handedness of CPL of these hydrogels can be efficiently inverted by coumarin derivatives through noncovalent interactions, which can be further tuned at will by incorporating metal ions into the co-assembly. The hydrogen bonds, coordination interactions, and steric hindrance are proved to be the crucial factors for the CPL inversion. This study provides feasible strategies to efficiently regulate the handedness of CPL through co-assembly, and these CPL materials may have potential applications in the fields of photoelectric devices, smart chiroptical materials, and biological systems.

Questions of Mirror Symmetry at the Photoexcited and Ground States of Non-Rigid Luminophores Raised by Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy. Part 2: Perylenes, BODIPYs, Molecular Scintillators, Coumarins, Rhodamine B, and DCM

We investigated whether semi-rigid and non-rigid π-conjugated fluorophores in the photoexcited (S1) and ground (S0) states exhibited mirror symmetry by circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy using a range of compounds dissolved in achiral liquids. The fluorophores tested were six perylenes, six scintillators, 11 coumarins, two pyrromethene difluoroborates (BODIPYs), rhodamine B (RhB), and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM). All the fluorophores showed negative-sign CPL signals in the ultraviolet (UV)–visible region, suggesting energetically non-equivalent and non-mirror image structures in the S1 state. The dissymmetry ratio of the CPL (glum) increased discontinuously from approximately −0.2 × 10−3 to −2.0 × 10−3, as the viscosity of the liquids increased. Among these liquids, C2-symmetrical stilbene 420 showed glum ≈ −0.5 × 10−3 at 408 nm in H2O and D2O, while, in a viscous alkanediol, the signal was amplified to glum ≈ −2.0 × 10−3. Moreover, BODIPYs, RhB, and DCM in the S0 states revealed weak (−)-sign CD signals with dissymmetry ratios (gabs) ≈ −1.4 × 10−5 at λmax/λext. The origin of the (−)-sign CPL and the (−)-sign CD signals may arise from an electroweak charge at the polyatomic level. Our CPL and CD spectral analysis could be a possible answer to the molecular parity violation hypothesis based on a weak neutral current of Z0 boson origin that could connect to the origin of biomolecular handedness.

Aggregation-induced chiroptical generation and photoinduced switching of achiral azobenzene-alt-fluorene copolymer endowed with left- and right-handed helical polysilanes

The left and right helicities of azobenzene (Azo)-containing main-chain polymer (PF8Azo) were successfully controlled with an enantiomeric pair of rigid rod-like helical polysilanes carrying (S)- and (R)-2-methylbutyl groups (PSi-S and PSi-R, respectively) as their hetero-aggregates in a mixture of chloroform and methanol solvents and in the solid state. Optimizing the good and poor cosolvents and their volume fractions showed that the molar ratio of PF8Azo to PSi-S/-R and the molecular weight of PF8Azo were crucial to boost the CD amplitudes of PF8Azo/PSi-S and PF8Azo/PSi-R hetero-aggregates. The photoresponsive trans-cis transformation caused noticeable changes in the sign and magnitude of the chiroptical behavior due to the hetero-aggregates. Moreover, the optically active PF8Azo homo-aggregates were produced by complete photoscissoring reactions at 313 nm, which could be assigned to the Siσ-Siσ* transitions of PSi-S and PSi-R.

Questions of Mirror Symmetry at the Photoexcited and Ground States of Non-Rigid Luminophores Raised by Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy: Part 1. Oligofluorenes, Oligophenylenes, Binaphthyls and Fused Aromatics

We report experimental tests of whether non-rigid, π-conjugated luminophores in the photoexcited (S₁) and ground (S₀) states dissolved in achiral liquids are mirror symmetrical by means of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Herein, we chose ten oligofluorenes, eleven linear/cyclic oligo-p-arylenes, three binaphthyls and five fused aromatics, substituted with alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl and phenylethynyl groups and also with no substituents. Without exception, all these non-rigid luminophores showed negative-sign CPL signals in the UV-visible region, suggesting temporal generation of energetically non-equivalent non-mirror image structures as far-from equilibrium open-flow systems at the S₁ state. For comparison, unsubstituted naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene and pyrene, which are achiral, rigid, planar luminophores, did not obviously show CPL/CD signals. However, camphor, which is a rigid chiral luminophore, showed mirror-image CPL/CD signals. The dissymmetry ratio of CPL (glum) for the oligofluorenes increased discontinuously, ranging from ≈ -(0.2 to 2.0) × 10-3, when the viscosity of the liquids increased. When the fluorene ring number increased, the glum value extrapolated at [η] = 0 reached -0.8 × 10-3 at 420 nm, leading to (⁻)-CPL signals predicted in the vacuum state. Our comprehensive CPL and CD study should provide a possible answer to the molecular parity violation hypothesis arising due to the weak neutral current mediated by the Z⁰-boson.

Pyrene-Containing ortho-Oligo(phenylene)ethynylene Foldamer as a Ratiometric Probe Based on Circularly Polarized Luminescence

In this manuscript, we report the first synthesis of an organic monomolecular emitter, which behaves as a circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-based ratiometric probe. The enantiopure helical ortho-oligo(phenylene)ethynylene (o-OPE) core has been prepared by a new and efficient macrocyclization reaction. The combination of such o-OPE helical skeleton and a pyrene couple leads to two different CPL emission features in a single structure whose ratio linearly responds to silver(I) concentration.

Synthesis, chiroptical properties, and self-assembled nanoparticles of chiral conjugated polymers based on optically stable helical aromatic esters

By Suzuki coupling reaction, three pairs of chiral conjugated polymers with optically stable helical aromatic ester subunits as the main-chain were designed and synthesized. Polymers (+)-P-P1 and (-)-M-P1, (+)-P-P2 and (-)-M-P2 showed strong fluorescence emission, strong mirror image CD and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals in THF. For polymers (+)-P-P3 and (-)-M-P3, containing the tetraphenylethene (TPE) moiety, they not only showed obvious aggregation induced enhancement emission (AIEE), but also exhibited mirror image CD signals and aggregation-induced enhancement CPL signals in THF-water mixtures. Moreover, (+)-P-P3 and (-)-M-P3 could also form chiral nanoparticles by solvent evaporation induced self-assembly. Interestingly, it was further found that the size of the nanoparticles could be controlled by the changing of THF/water ratio, and their CPL properties were also shown.

AIE-active polyanetholesulfonic acid sodium salts with room-temperature phosphorescence characteristics for Fe3+ detection

Room-temperature phosphorescent materials have been a major focus of research and development during the past decades, due to their applications in OLEDs, photovoltaic cells, chemical sensors, and bioimaging. However, achieving polymeric phosphorescent materials without heavy-metal atoms and halogens under ambient conditions remains a major challenge. Here, we report a polymeric phosphor, namely polyanetholesulfonic acid sodium salt, which not only has room temperature phosphorescence characteristic but also aggregation-induced emission and dependence on the excitation wavelength characteristics. Moreover, it can recognize Fe³⁺ effectively.

Commercialized polyanetholesulfonic acid sodium salts have AIE activity and room temperature phosphorescence characteristics.

Circularly Polarized Light with Sense and Wavelengths To Regulate Azobenzene Supramolecular Chirality in Optofluidic Medium

Circularly polarized light (CPL) as a massless physical force causes absolute asymmetric photosynthesis, photodestruction, and photoresolution. CPL handedness has long been believed to be the determining factor in the resulting product's chirality. However, product chirality as a function of the CPL handedness, irradiation wavelength, and irradiation time has not yet been studied systematically. Herein, we investigate this topic using achiral polymethacrylate carrying achiral azobenzene as micrometer-size aggregates in an optofluidic medium with a tuned refractive index. Azobenzene chirality with a high degree of dissymmetry ratio (±1.3 × 10^-2 at 313 nm) was generated, inverted, and switched in multiple cycles by irradiation with monochromatic incoherent CPL (313, 365, 405, and 436 nm) for 20 s using a weak incoherent light source (≈ 30 μW·cm^-2). Moreover, the optical activity was retained for over 1 week in the dark. Photoinduced chirality was swapped by the irradiating wavelength, regardless of whether the CPL sense was the same. This scenario is similar to the so-called Cotton effect, which was first described in 1895. The tandem choice of both CPL sense and its wavelength was crucial for azobenzene chirality. Our experimental proof and theoretical simulation should provide new insight into the chirality of CPL-controlled molecules, supramolecules, and polymers.
