Tailoring Amphiphilic Copolymers for Improved Aqueous Foam Stability

Amphiphilic copolymers of various-molecular-weight (MW) poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The first PEG series, poly(ethylene glycol)monomethacrylate (PEGMA, average Mn 200 and 400 MW), contained an -OH terminal group, and the second series, poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether monomethacrylate (PEGMMA, average Mn 200, 400, and 1000 MW), possessed an -OCH₃ terminal group. A total of five PEG-functionalized copolymers contained the same hydrophobic monomer, butyl acrylate (BA), and were successfully reproduced via a one-pot synthesis. The resulting PEG-functionalized copolymers provide a systematic trend of properties including surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), cloud point (CP), and foam lifetime based on the average MW of the PEG monomer and final polymer properties. In general, the PEGMA series produced more stable foams with PEGMA200 demonstrating the least change in foam height with time over a 10 min period. The important exception is that at elevated temperatures, the PEGMMA1000 copolymer had longer foam lifetimes. The self-assembling copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR), CMC, surface tension, dynamic light scattering (DLS), as a foam using a dynamic foam analyzer (DFA), and foam lifetime at ambient and elevated temperatures. The copolymers described highlight the importance of the PEG monomer MW and terminal end group for surface interaction and final polymer properties for foam stabilization.

Thermoresponsive P(HEMA-co-OEGMA) copolymers: synthesis, characteristics and solution behavior

Random, thermoresponsive copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate M _n = 300 (OEGMA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in a DMSO/H₂O solvent mixture. Reactivity ratios were determined by the extended Kelen-Tudos method and found to be close to 1. Studies confirmed the randomness of the obtained copolymers. The thermoresponsiveness in water and in phosphate buffer (PBS) solutions and the influence of copolymer composition and solution concentration on the cloud point temperature (T _cp) were investigated. Phase transitions in water solutions were reversible and narrow. The response of P(HEMA-co-OEGMA) to temperature could be adjusted in the range from 66.5 °C to 21.5 °C by changing the HEMA content. In PBS solutions, significant differences in the heating/cooling cycle were observed for all investigated concentrations. The presence of kosmotropic salts in PBS decreased the T _cp value and caused thermal aggregation of chains to form a macroscopic aggregate at temperatures above the T _cp.

2-(Hydroxyimino)aldehydes: Photo- and Physicochemical Properties of a Versatile Functional Group for Monomer Design

In the context of our research on stimuli-responsive polymers bearing the 2-(hydroxyimino)aldehyde (HIA) group, we have explored the photochemical behavior and physicochemical properties of a number of HIAs. Interpretation of the experimental data is supported by quantum mechanical calculations. HIAs are expected to undergo photoisomerization, chelate metal ions, yield hydrogen-bonded dimers or oligomers, exhibit relatively low pK_a s, and form >C=NO^. radicals through OH hydrogen abstraction or oxidation of the oximate ion. Besides the well-established E/Z oxime photoisomerism, we observed a Norrish-Yang cyclization resulting in cyclobutanol oximes, to our knowledge not previously described in the literature. The acidity, bond dissociation enthalpies, and electrochemical properties of the HIAs are compared with literature data of simple oximes. The results are discussed in relation to the many potential applications for HIAs, with emphasis on the synthesis of novel HIA-containing responsive polymers.
