Self-Templating Copolymerization to Produce Robust Conductive Nanocoatings Based on Conjugated Polymer Brushes with Implementable Memristive Characteristics

An effective synthesis of conductive polymer brushes, i.e., self-templating surface-initiated copolymerization (ST-SICP), is developed. It proceeds through copolymerization of pendant thiophene groups in the precursor multimonomer poly(3-methylthienyl methacrylate) (PMTM) brushes with free 3-methylthiophene (3MT) monomers leading to PMTM-co-P3MT brushes. This approach leads to improved conformational freedom of generated conjugated poly(thiophene)-based chains and their higher share in the brushes with respect to conjugation of pendant thiophene groups only. As a result, best performing conjugated PMTM-co-P3MT brushes demonstrate high ohmic conductivity in both out-of-plane and in-plane direction. Furthermore, thanks to the covalent anchoring as well as intra- and intermolecular connections, highly stable and mechanically robust nanocoatings are produced which can survive mechanical cleaning and long-term storage under ambient conditions. Grafting of ionic poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa) in between PMTM-co-P3MT chains brings new properties to such binary mixed brushes that can operate as thin-film memristive coating with switchable conductance. It is worth mentioning that the crucial synthetic steps, i.e., grafting of precursor PMTM brushes by surface-initiated organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-O-ATRP) and PSSNa chains by surface-initiated photoiniferter-mediated polymerization (SI-PIMP) are conducted under ambient conditions using only microliter volumes of reagents providing methodology that can be considered for use beyond the laboratory scale.

Threshold of Surface Initiator Concentration for Polymer Brush Growth by Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

The surface modification of various materials by grafting functional molecules has attracted much attention from fundamental research to practical applications because of its ability to impart various physical and chemical properties to the surfaces. One promising approach is the use of polymer brushes synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from surface-tethered initiators (SIs). In this study, for the purpose of controlling the grafting amounts/densities of polymer brushes, we developed a facile method to precisely regulate SI concentrations of SI layers (SILs) by serial dilution based on a sol-gel method. By simply mixing organosilanes terminated with and without an initiator group ((p-chloromethyl) phenyltrimethoxysilane (CMPTMS) and phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS), respectively) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), SI concentrations of SILs could be arbitrarily tuned precisely by varying dilution factors of (CMPTMS + PTMS)/CMPTMS (DFs, 1-107). The resulting SILs prepared at different DFs were highly smooth and transparent. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also confirmed that the SIs were homogeneously distributed at the topmost surface of the SILs and their concentrations were proven to be accurately and precisely controlled from high to extremely low, comparable to theoretical values. Subsequent SI-ATRP in air ("paint-on" SI-ATRP) of two different types of monomers (hydrophobic/nonionic (2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) and hydrophilic/ionic (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)) demonstrated that polymer brushes with different grafting amounts/densities were successfully grafted only from SILs with DFs of 1-104 (theoretical SI concentrations: 3.9 × 10-4 ∼ 3.5 units/nm2), while at DFs of 105 and above (theoretical SI concentrations: <3.9 × 10-5 units/nm2), no sign of polymer brush growth was confirmed by thickness, XPS, and water contact angle data. Therefore, we are the first to gather evidence that the approximate threshold of SI concentration required for "paint-on" SI-ATRP might be on the order of 10-4 ∼ 10-5 units/nm2.

Surface engineering of mixed conjugated/polyelectrolyte brushes - Tailoring interface structure and electrical properties

HYPOTHESIS

Mixed polymer brushes (MPBs) could be synthesized by surface dilution of homopolymer brushes and subsequent grafting of other type of chains in the formed voids. Nanophase separation and dynamics of surface-grafted chains could be tailored by modification of their molecular architecture. Mixed polyelectrolyte and conjugated chains contribute synergistically to tailor properties of the coating.

EXPERIMENTS

A new synthetic strategy that allowed spatially controlled grafting of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) chains (PSSNa) in close neighborhood of poly(3-methylthienyl methacrylate) (PMTM) brushes (precursors of the conjugated chains) using surface-initiated polymerizations was developed. The final mixed conjugated/polyelectrolyte brushes were prepared by template polymerization of pendant thiophene groups in PMTM chains. Surface dynamics and nanophase separation of MPBs were studied by nanoscale resolution IR imaging, SIMS profiling and AFM mapping in selective solvents.

FINDINGS

Unconjugated MPBs were shown to undergo vertical, and horizontal nanophase separation, while the size and shape of the nanodomains were dependent on molar ratio of the mixed chains and their relative lengths. Generation of the conjugated chains led to diminishing of nanophase separation thanks to stronger mutual interactions of conjugated PMTM and PSSNa (macromolecular mixing). The obtained systems demonstrated tunable interfacial structure and resistance switching phenomenon desired in construction of smart surfaces or memristive devices.

Antifouling and Antibacterial Surfaces Grafted with Sulfur-Containing Copolymers

Antifouling and antibacterial surfaces that can prevent nonspecific biological adhesion are important to support a myriad of biomedical applications. In this study, we have used an innovative photopolymerization technology to develop sulfur-containing polymer-grafted antifouling and antibacterial surfaces. The relationship between the hydrophilic property and the capability to resist protein and macrophage adsorption of the surface copolymer brushes was investigated. The sulfide monomer incorporated into the surface copolymer brushes can be further ionized to carry positive charges and impart antibacterial activity, leading to surfaces with dual antifouling and antibacterial functions. We believe that the reported sulfur-containing polymer brushes can be considered an emerging and important polymer for antifouling and antibacterial applications.

Synthetic Route to Conjugated Donor–Acceptor Polymer Brushes via Alternating Copolymerization of Bifunctional Monomers

Alternating donor–acceptor conjugated polymers, widely investigated due to their applications in organic photovoltaics, are obtained mainly by cross-coupling reactions. Such a synthetic route exhibits limited efficiency and requires using, for example, toxic palladium catalysts. Furthermore, the coating process demands solubility of the macromolecules, provided by the introduction of alkyl side chains, which have an impact on the properties of the final material. Here, we present the synthetic route to ladder-like donor–acceptor polymer brushes using alternating copolymerization of modified styrene and maleic anhydride monomers, ensuring proper arrangement of the pendant donor and acceptor groups along the polymer chains grafted from a surface. As a proof of concept, macromolecules with pendant thiophene and benzothiadiazole groups were grafted by means of RAFT and metal-free ATRP polymerizations. Densely packed brushes with a thickness up to 200 nm were obtained in a single polymerization process, without the necessity of using metal-based catalysts or bulky substituents of the monomers. Oxidative polymerization using FeCl₃ was then applied to form the conjugated chains in a double-stranded (ladder-like) architecture.

Precise Stepwise Synthesis of Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Polymer Brushes Grafted from Surfaces

Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers are promising materials in optoelectronic applications, especially those forming ordered thin films. The processability of such conjugated macromolecules is typically enhanced by introducing bulky side chains, but it may affect their ordering and/or photophysical properties of the films. We show here the synthesis of surface-grafted D-A polymer brushes using alternating attachment of tailored monomers serving as electron donors (D) and acceptors (A) via coupling reactions. In such a stepwise procedure, alternating copolymer brushes consisting of thiophene and benzothiadiazole-based moieties with precisely tailored thickness and no bulky substituents were formed. The utilization of Sonogashira coupling was shown to produce densely packed molecular wires of tailored thickness, while Stille coupling and Huisgen cycloaddition were less efficient, likely because of the higher flexibility of D-A bridging groups. The D-A brushes exhibit reduced bandgaps, semiconducting properties and can form aggregates, which can be adjusted by changing the grafting density of the chains.

Ladder-like Polymer Brushes Containing Conjugated Poly(Propylenedioxythiophene) Chains

The high stability and conductivity of 3,4-disubstituted polythiophenes such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) make them attractive candidates for commercial applications. However, next-generation nanoelectronic devices require novel macromolecular strategies for the precise synthesis of advanced polymer structures as well as their arrangement. In this report, we present a synthetic route to make ladder-like polymer brushes with poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT)-conjugated chains. The brushes were prepared via a self-templating surface-initiated technique (ST-SIP) that combines the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of bifunctional ProDOT-based monomers and subsequent oxidative polymerization of the pendant ProDOT groups in the parent brushes. The brushes prepared in this way were characterized by grazing-angle FTIR, XPS spectroscopy, and AFM. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements were used to extract the information about the structure and effective conjugation length of PProDOT-based chains. Stability tests performed in ambient conditions and under exposure to standardized solar light revealed the remarkable stability of the obtained materials.

Preparation of Homopolymer, Block Copolymer, and Patterned Brushes Bearing Thiophene and Acetylene Groups Using Microliter Volumes of Reaction Mixtures

The synthesis of surface-grafted polymers with variable functionality requires the careful selection of polymerization methods that also enable spatially controlled grafting, which is crucial for the fabrication of, e.g., nano (micro) sensor or nanoelectronic devices. The development of versatile, simple, economical, and eco-friendly synthetic strategies is important for scaling up the production of such polymer brushes. We have recently shown that poly (3-methylthienyl methacrylate) (PMTM) and poly (3-trimethylsilyl-2-propynyl methacrylate) (PTPM) brushes with pendant thiophene and acetylene groups, respectively, could be used for the production of ladder-like conjugated brushes that are potentially useful in the mentioned applications. However, the previously developed syntheses of such brushes required the use of high volumes of reagents, elevated temperature, or high energy UV-B light. Therefore, we present here visible light-promoted metal-free surface-initiated ATRP (metal-free SI-ATRP) that allows the economical synthesis of PMTM and PTPM brushes utilizing only microliter volumes of reaction mixtures. The versatility of this approach was shown by the formation of homopolymers but also the block copolymer conjugated brushes (PMTM and PTPM blocks in both sequences) and patterned films using TEM grids serving as photomasks. A simple reaction setup with only a monomer, solvent, commercially available organic photocatalyst, and initiator decorated substrate makes the synthesis of these complex polymer structures achievable for non-experts and ready for scaling up.

Antifouling Surfaces Enabled by Surface Grafting of Highly Hydrophilic Sulfoxide Polymer Brushes

Antifouling surfaces are important in a broad range of applications. An effective approach to antifouling surfaces is to covalently attach antifouling polymer brushes. This work reports the synthesis of a new class of antifouling polymer brushes based on highly hydrophilic sulfoxide polymers by surface-initiated photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization. The sulfoxide polymer brushes are able to effectively reduce nonspecific adsorption of proteins and cells, demonstrating remarkable antifouling properties. Given the outstanding antifouling behavior of the sulfoxide polymers and versatility of surface-initiated PET-RAFT technology, this work presents a useful and general approach to engineering various material surfaces with antifouling properties, for potential biomedical applications in areas such as tissue engineering, medical implants, and regenerative medicine.

Surface-Initiated Photoinduced Iron-Catalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization with ppm Concentration of FeBr3 under Visible Light

Reversible deactivation radical polymerizations with reduced amount of organometallic catalyst are currently a field of interest of many applications. One of the very promising techniques is photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) that is mainly studied for copper catalysts in the solution. Recently, advantageous iron-catalyzed photo-ATRP (photo-Fe-ATRP) compatible with high demanding biological applications was presented. In response to that, we developed surface-initiated photo-Fe-ATRP (SI-photo-Fe-ATRP) that was used for facile synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate) brushes with the presence of only 200 ppm of FeBr3/tetrabutylammonium bromide catalyst (FeBr3/TBABr) under visible light irradiation (wavelength: 450 nm). The kinetics of both SI-photo-Fe-ATRP and photo-Fe-ATRP in solution were compared and followed by 1H NMR, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Brush grafting densities were determined using two methodologies. The influence of the sacrificial initiator on the kinetics of brush growth was studied. It was found that SI-photo-Fe-ATRP could be effectively controlled even without any sacrificial initiators thanks to in situ production of ATRP initiator in solution as a result of reaction between the monomer and Br radicals generated in photoreduction of FeBr3/TBABr. The optimized and simplified reaction setup allowed synthesis of very thick (up to 110 nm) PMMA brushes at room temperature, under visible light with only 200 ppm of iron-based catalyst. The same reaction conditions, but with the presence of sacrificial initiator, enabled formation of much thinner layers (18 nm).

Reversible Functionalization of Clickable Polyacrylamide Gels with Protein and Graft Copolymers

Modular strategies to fabricate gels with tailorable chemical functionalities are relevant to applications spanning from biomedicine to analytical chemistry. Here, the properties of clickable poly(acrylamide-co-propargyl acrylate) (pAPA) hydrogels are modified via sequential in-gel copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions. Under optimized conditions, each in-gel CuAAC reaction proceeds with rate constants of ~0.003 s-1, ensuring uniform modifications for gels < 200 μm thick. Using the modular functionalization approach and a cleavable disulfide linker, pAPA gels were modified with benzophenone and acrylate groups. Benzophenone groups allow gel functionalization with unmodified proteins using photoactivation. Acrylate groups enabled copolymer grafting onto the gels. To release the functionalized unit, pAPA gels were treated with disulfide reducing agents, which triggered ~50 % release of immobilized protein and grafted copolymers. The molecular mass of grafted copolymers (~6.2 kDa) was estimated by monitoring the release process, expanding the tools available to characterize copolymers grafted onto hydrogels. Investigation of the efficiency of in-gel CuAAC reactions revealed limitations of the sequential modification approach, as well as guidelines to convert a pAPA gel with a single functional group into a gel with three distinct functionalities. Taken together, we see this modular framework to engineer multifunctional hydrogels as benefiting applications of hydrogels in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and separation science.

Polymer Brushes via Surface-Initiated Electrochemically Mediated ATRP: Role of a Sacrificial Initiator in Polymerization of Acrylates on Silicon Substrates

Silicon wafers as semiconductors are essential components of integrated circuits in electronic devices. For this reason, modification of the silicon surface is an important factor in the manufacturing of new hybrid materials applied in micro- and nanoelectronics. Herein, copolymer brushes of hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) and hydrophobic poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) were grafted from silicon wafers via simplified electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (seATRP) according to a surface-initiated approach. The syntheses of PHEA-b-PtBA copolymers were carried out with diminished catalytic complex concentration (successively 25 and 6 ppm of Cu). In order to optimize the reaction condition, the effect of the addition of a supporting electrolyte was investigated. A controlled increase in PHEA brush thickness was confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Various other parameters including contact angles and free surface energy (FSE) for the modified silicon wafer were presented. Furthermore, the effect of the presence of a sacrificial initiator in solution on the thickness of the grafted brushes was reported. Successfully fabricated inorganic–organic hybrid nanomaterials show potential application in biomedicine and microelectronics devices, e.g., biosensors.

Recent Advances in Hybrid Biomimetic Polymer-Based Films: from Assembly to Applications

Biological membranes, in addition to being a cell boundary, can host a variety of proteins that are involved in different biological functions, including selective nutrient transport, signal transduction, inter- and intra-cellular communication, and cell-cell recognition. Due to their extreme complexity, there has been an increasing interest in developing model membrane systems of controlled properties based on combinations of polymers and different biomacromolecules, i.e., polymer-based hybrid films. In this review, we have highlighted recent advances in the development and applications of hybrid biomimetic planar systems based on different polymeric species. We have focused in particular on hybrid films based on (i) polyelectrolytes, (ii) polymer brushes, as well as (iii) tethers and cushions formed from synthetic polymers, and (iv) block copolymers and their combinations with biomacromolecules, such as lipids, proteins, enzymes, biopolymers, and chosen nanoparticles. In this respect, multiple approaches to the synthesis, characterization, and processing of such hybrid films have been presented. The review has further exemplified their bioengineering, biomedical, and environmental applications, in dependence on the composition and properties of the respective hybrids. We believed that this comprehensive review would be of interest to both the specialists in the field of biomimicry as well as persons entering the field.

Thermoresponsive Polymer Gating System on Mesoporous Shells of Silica Particles Serving as Smart Nanocontainers

Spherical silica nanoparticles with solid cores and mesoporous shells (SCMS) were decorated with thermoresponsive polymer brushes that were shown to serve as macromolecular valves to control loading and unloading of a model dye within the mesopores. Thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes were grafted from the surfaces of both solid core (SC) and SCMS particles of similar size using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Both systems based on porous (SCMS-PNIPAM) and nonporous (SC-PNIPAM) particles were characterized using cryo-TEM, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis to determine the structure and composition of the decorated nanoparticles. The grafted PNIPAM brushes were found to be responsive to temperature changes enabling temperature-controlled gating of the pores. The processes of loading and unloading in the obtained systems were examined using a model fluorescent dye-rhodamine 6G. Polymer brushes in SCMS-PNIPAM systems were shown to serve as molecular valves enabling significant adsorption (loading) of the dye inside the pores with respect to the SC-PNIPAM (no pores) and SCMS (no valves) systems. The effective unloading of the fluorescent cargo molecules from the decorated nanoparticles was achieved in a water/methanol solution. The obtained SCMS-PNIPAM particles may be used as smart nanocontainers or nanoreactors offering also facile isolation from the suspension due to the presence of dense cores.

Conducting Polymer Grafting: Recent and Key Developments

Since the discovery of conductive polyacetylene, conductive electroactive polymers are at the focal point of technology generation and biocommunication materials. The reasons why this research never stops growing, are twofold: first, the demands from the advanced technology towards more sophistication, precision, durability, processability and cost-effectiveness; and second, the shaping of conducting polymer research in accordance with the above demand. One of the major challenges in conducting polymer research is addressing the processability issue without sacrificing the electroactive properties. Therefore, new synthetic designs and use of post-modification techniques become crucial than ever. This quest is not only advancing the field but also giving birth of new hybrid materials integrating merits of multiple functional motifs. The present review article is an attempt to discuss the recent progress in conducting polymer grafting, which is not entirely new, but relatively lesser developed area for this class of polymers to fine-tune their physicochemical properties. Apart from conventional covalent grafting techniques, non-covalent approach, which is relatively new but has worth creation potential, will also be discussed. The aim is to bring together novel molecular designs and strategies to stimulate the existing conducting polymer synthesis methodologies in order to enrich its fascinating chemistry dedicated toward real-life applications.

Radiotherapy-Sensitized Tumor Photothermal Ablation Using γ-Polyglutamic Acid Nanogels Loaded with Polypyrrole

Development of versatile nanoscale platforms for cancer diagnosis and therapy is of great importance for applications in translational medicine. In this work, we present the use of γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) nanogels (NGs) to load polypyrrole (PPy) for thermal/photoacoustic (PA) imaging and radiotherapy (RT)-sensitized tumor photothermal therapy (PTT). First, a double emulsion approach was used to prepare the cystamine dihydrochloride (Cys)-cross-linked γ-PGA NGs. Next, the cross-linked NGs served as a reactor to be filled with pyrrole monomers that were subjected to in situ oxidation polymerization in the existence of Fe(III) ions. The formed uniform PPy-loaded NGs having an average diameter of 38.9 ± 8.6 nm exhibited good water-dispersibility and colloid stability. The prominent near-infrared (NIR) absorbance feature due to the loaded PPy endowed the NGs with contrast enhancement in PA imaging. The hybrid NGs possessed excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (64.7%) and stability against laser irradiation, and could be adopted for PA imaging and PTT of cancerous cells and tumor xenografts. Importantly, we also explored the cooperative PTT and X-ray radiation-mediated RT for enhanced tumor therapy. We show that PTT of tumors can be more significantly sensitized by RT using the sequence of laser irradiation followed by X-ray radiation as compared to using the reverse sequence. Our study suggests a promising theranostic platform of hybrid NGs that may be potentially utilized for PA imaging and combination therapy of different types of tumors.

Facile synthesis of optically active helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) brushes on a silicon surface and their chiral resolution ability
