Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Radical-Induced Photochromic Silver(I) Metal-Organic Frameworks: Alternative Topology, Dynamic Photoluminescence and Efficient Photothermal Conversion Modulated by Anionic Guests

Photogenerated radicals are an indispensable member of the state-of-the-art photochromic material family, as they can effectively modulate the photoluminescence and photothermal conversion performance of radical-induced photochromic complexes. Herein, two novel radical-induced photochromic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Ag(TEPE)](AC) ⋅ 7/4H2O ⋅ 5/4EtOH (1) and [Ag(TEPE)](NC) ⋅ 3H2O ⋅ EtOH (2), are reported. Distinctly different topological networks can be obtained by judiciously introducing alternative π-conjugated anionic guests, including a new topological structure (named as sfm) first reported in this work, describing as 4,4,4,4-c net. EPR data and UV-Vis spectra prove the radical-induced photochromic mechanism. Dynamic photochromism exhibits tunability in a wide CIE color space, with a linear segment from yellow to red for 1, while a curved coordinate line for 2, resulting in colorful emission from blue to orange. Moreover, photogenerated TEPE* radicals effectively activate the near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion effect of MOFs. Under 1 W cm-2 808 nm laser irradiation, the surface temperatures of photoproducts 1* and 2* can reach ~160 °C and ~120 °C, respectively, with competitive NIR photothermal conversion efficiencies η=51.8 % (1*) and 36.2 % (2*). This work develops a feasible electrostatic compensation strategy to accurately introduce photoactive anionic guests into MOFs to construct multifunctional radical-induced photothermal conversion materials with tunable photoluminescence behavior.

The influence of light on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers with different halogen substituents

Photocontrolled magnetic properties are fundamental for the applications of molecular magnets, which have the features of high time and space resolution; however, such magnetic properties are highly challenging to be achieved owing to the weak light-matter interactions. Herein, the influence of in situ light irradiation on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers 1 and 2 with the same coordination skeletons but different halogen substituents was studied. 1 and 2, and their in situ photoexcited products 1a and 2a, display field-induced magnetization dynamics based on Orbach and/or Raman processes. The magnetization dynamics are fine-modulated by the synergetic effect of light irradiation and a ligand substituent, due to the charge re-distribution of the excited states of the ligand.

Modulation of magnetization dynamics of an Er(III) coordination polymer by the conversion of a ligand to a radical using UV light

Light-induced substance conversion is highly promising for creating new radical-based compounds. Herein, we report an Er(III) coordination polymer [Er(CA)(ACA)(DMF)(H₂O)]_n (1) and its Y(III)-diluted analogue 1@Y (H₂CA = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone, HACA = 9-anthracene carboxylic acid) with the light-induced transformation of the ligand to a radical. The χ_MT values of light-transformed products 1a and 1a@Y are higher than those of 1 and 1@Y, respectively, due to the formation of radicals by ultraviolet light irradiation, confirmed by EPR measurement as well. The effective energy barriers for magnetization reversal (U_eff) decrease from 72 K for 1 to 67 K for 1a, and from 117 K for 1@Y to 94 K for 1a@Y. This work not only provides a new light-conversion system but also reveals the nature of photo-induced variation of magnetic properties.

X-Ray Triggered Coordination-Bond Breakage in Dysprosium-Organic Framework and its Impact on Magnetic Properties

Photosensitive lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMM) are very attractive for their potential applications in information storage, switching, and sensors. However, the light-driven structural transformation in Ln-SMMs hardly changes the coordination number of the lanthanide ion. Herein, for the first time it is reported that X-ray (λ=0.71073 Å) irradiation can break the coordination bond of Dy-OH₂ in the three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework Dy₂ (amp₂ H₂ )₃ (H₂ O)₆  ⋅ 4H₂ O (MDAF-5), in which the {Dy₂ (OPO)₂ } dimers are cross-linked by dianthracene-phosphonate ligands. The structural transformation proceeds in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) fashion, forming the new phase Dy₂ (amp₂ H₂ )₃ (H₂ O)₄  ⋅ 4H₂ O (MDAF-5-X). The phase transition is accompanied by a significant change in magnetic properties due to the alteration in coordination geometry of the Dy^III ion from a distorted pentagonal bipyramid in MDAF-5 to a distorted octahedron in MDAF-5-X.

Magnetic and Luminescent Dual Responses of Photochromic Hexaazamacrocyclic Lanthanide Complexes

Herein, hexaazamacrocyclic ligand L^N6 was employed to construct a series of photochromic rare-earth complexes, [Ln(L^N6)(NO₃)₂](BPh₄) [1-Ln, Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu, Gd, Y; L^N6 = (3E,5E,10E,12E)-3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane-3,5,10,12-tetraene]. The behavior of photogenerated radicals of hexaazamacrocyclic ligands was revealed for the first time. Upon 365 nm light irradiation, complexes 1-Ln exhibit photochromic behavior induced by photogenerated radicals according to EPR and UV-vis analyses. Static and dynamic magnetic studies of 1-Dy and irradiated product 1-Dy* indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions among Dy^III ions and photogenerated L^N6 radicals, as well as slow magnetization relaxation behavior under a 2 kOe applied field. Further fitting analyses show that the magnetization relaxation in 1-Dy* is markedly different from 1-Dy. Time-dependent fluorescence measurements reveal the characteristic luminescence quenching dynamics of lanthanide in the photochromic process. Especially for irradiated product 1-Eu*, the luminescence is almost completely quenched within 5 min with a quenching efficiency of 98.4%. The results reported here provide a prospect for the design of radical-induced photochromic lanthanide single-molecule magnets and will promote the further development of multiresponsive photomagnetic materials.

Modulating the Structures and Magnetic Properties of Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets through Acid-Base Regulation

Chemical modulation on the structures and physical properties of the coordination complexes is of great interest for the preparation of new functional materials. By changing the acidity or basicity of the reaction medium, the deprotonation degree of a multidentate ligand with multiple active protons, H₄daps (H₄daps = N',N'″-((1E,1'E)-pyridine-2,6-diylbis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(2-hydroxybenzohydrazide)), can be regulated on purpose. With this ligand of different deprotonation and charges, three new Dy^III complexes ([Dy(H₃daps)(CH₃COO)₂(EtOH)]·CH₃COOH (1Dy), [Dy₂(H₂daps)₂(EtOH)₂(H₂O)₂(MeOH)₂](CF₃SO₃)₂·(H₂O)₂ (2Dy), and [Dy₃(H₁daps)₂(H₂daps)(μ₃-OH)(EtOH)(H₂O)] (3Dy)) of different nuclearities (mono-, di-, and trinuclear for 1Dy to 3Dy, respectively) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Analyses on the related bond lengths and resulting hydrogen bond modes in the complexes provide the details of the deprotonation position and the charge of the ligands, which can be in the form of H₃daps^-, H₂daps^2-, and H₁daps^3-. Interestingly, the more deprotonated ligand can act as a bridging ligand between the Dy^III centers using the phenol and/or carbonyl oxygen atoms, which leads to the multinuclear structures. Magnetic studies on these complexes revealed that complex 1Dy is a field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM), while complexes 2Dy and 3Dy show SMM behavior under a zero dc field.

The rational construction of diamond-like dysprosium–hexacyanometallate frameworks featuring dynamic magnetic behaviour

Four novel diamond-like dysprosium–hexacyanometallate frameworks featuring slow magnetic relaxation have been rationally constructed by a feasible building block strategy using hexacyanometallate to link superparamagnetic dimeric units.

Hexanuclear Co4 Dy2 , Zn4 Dy2 , and Co4 Y2 Complexes with Defect Tetracubane Cores: Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

A hexanuclear heterometallic cluster of composition [Dy₂ Co₄ (L)₄ (NO₃ )₂ (OH)₄ (C₂ H₅ OH)₂ ] ⋅ 2 C₂ H₅ OH (1) was synthesized by employing a Schiff base 2-(((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl) imino)methyl)-4-methoxyphenol (H₂ L) as ligand and utilizing Dy(NO₃ )₃  ⋅ 6H₂ O and Co(NO₃ )₂  ⋅ 6H₂ O as metal ion sources. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis indicated that complex 1 contains a defect tetracubane core and possesses central symmetric structure, with two Dy^III ions being in the central body position of the molecule and four Co^II ions being arranged at the outer sites. Magnetic studies reveal that complex 1 behaves as single-molecule magnet (SMM) with energy barrier of 27.50 K. To investigate the individual contribution of Dy^III and Co^II ions to the SMM behavior, another two complexes of formulae [Dy₂ Zn₄ (L)₄ (NO₃ )₂ (OH)₄ ] ⋅ 4CH₃ OH (2) and [Y₂ Co₄ (L)₄ (NO₃ )₂ (OH)₄ (C₂ H₅ OH)₂ ] ⋅ 2 C₂ H₅ OH (3) were prepared. Complexes 1 and 3 are isomorphous. The coordination geometries of Dy^III ions in 1 and 2 are different. The Dy^III ions are eight-coordinated in 2 and nine-coordinated in 1. Complex 2 exhibits SMM behavior with energy barrier of 69.67 K, but complex 3 does not display SMM property. These results reveal that the SMM behaviors of 1 and 2 are mainly originated from Dy^III ions. It might be the higher symmetry of Dy^III ions in 2 that results in the higher energy barrier.

Thermo- and light-triggered reversible interconversion of dysprosium-anthracene complexes and their responsive optical, magnetic and dielectric properties

Artificial smart materials with switchable multifunctionality are of immense interest owing to their wide application in sensors, displays and memory devices. Lanthanide complexes are promising multifunctional materials integrating optical and magnetic characteristics. However, synergistic manipulation of different physical properties in lanthanide systems is still challenging. Herein we designed and synthesized a mononuclear complex [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1), which incorporates 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma) as a photo-active component and 4-hydroxypyridine (4-hpy) as a polar component. This compound shows several unusual features: (a) reversible thermo-responsive phase transition associated with the order-disorder transition of 4-hpy and SCN-, which leads to thermochromic behavior and dielectric anomaly; (b) reversible photo-induced dimerization of anthracene groups, which leads to synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example of lanthanide complexes that show stimuli-triggered synergistic and reversible switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.

Physical stimulus and chemical modulations of bistable molecular magnetic materials

In this Feature Article, we summarize the recent progress made in modulating the multifaceted magnetic behaviour of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and spin-crossover (SCO) materials based on chemical modifications and external stimuli.

Interplay of anthracene luminescence and dysprosium magnetism by steric control of photodimerization

Systematic control of the intermolecular pair-wise [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of a series of dysprosium phosphonates through fine-tuning of two different phosphonate ligands, one with a bidentate blocker and one with an anthracene antenna, both with alkyl substituents, reveals a size dependent rate. With bulky isopropyl on the diphosphonate blocker little response to UV light is observed. In contrast, compounds with ethyl which has less steric hindrance exhibit almost complete photocycloaddition. Interestingly, the alkyl substituents attached to anthracene monophosphonate have no evident effect on the reaction rate. Although no direct relationship can be found between the substitutions and the observed differences in field-induced single molecule magnetism, remarkable changes in magnetic dynamics are observed for complexes before and after the complete photocycloaddition reactions.

Spin-crossover modulation via single-crystal to single-crystal photochemical [2 + 2] reaction in Hofmann-type frameworks

Spin-crossover (SCO) system integrated with photochemical [2 + 2] reaction is firstly reported. The dimerization of azastilbene ligands dramatically modulated SCO properties, providing a new strategy for exploiting photo-responsive SCO materials.

This study reports the first modulation of spin-crossover (SCO) behavior via a photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. Here we construct two no-solvent Fe(ii)–Ag(i) bimetallic Hofmann-type frameworks, [Fe(4-spy)₂{Ag(CN)₂}₂] (1) and [Fe(2,4-bpe)₂{Ag(CN)₂}₂] (2) (4-spy = 4-styrylpyridine, 2,4-bpe = trans-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene). For 1, the dimerization of 4-spy results in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformation from 2D interdigitated layers to a 3D interpenetrated structure. Additionally, a 3D → 3D structural transformation accompanied with Ag(i)–N bond breaking is achieved via the photochemical cycloaddition reaction of 2,4-bpe in 2. More importantly, both the spin transition temperatures and the SCO character are effectively modulated; thus, this approach provides a new strategy for constructing photo-responsive SCO magnetic materials.

Large magnetocaloric effect and remarkable single-molecule-magnet behavior in triangle-assembled LnIII6 clusters

Wide-Range Columnar and Lamellar Photoluminescent Liquid-Crystalline Lanthanide Complexes with Mesogenic 4-Pyridone Derivatives

A series of liquid crystals with various lanthanide ions (Eu^III , Sm^III , and Tb^III ) was designed and prepared starting from the corresponding lanthanide nitrates and N-alkylated 4-pyridone derivatives bearing mesogenic 3,4,5-tris(alkyloxy)benzyl moieties (alkyl=hexyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, or hexadecyl). These new lanthanidomesogens were investigated for their mesogenic properties by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Their thermal stability was assessed by thermogravimetric analysis. All of these complexes show enantiotropic liquid-crystalline behavior with lamellar (SmA) phases in the case of shorter-chain complexes (C₆ and C₈ ) or hexagonal columnar phases (Col_h ) for complexes with longer alkyl chains (C₁₂ , C₁₄ , and C₁₆ ), which were assigned on the basis of their characteristic textures and XRD studies. For complexes with an intermediate number of carbon atoms in the side chains (C₁₀ ), both a lamellar phase at lower temperatures and a Col_h phase at higher temperatures were evidenced. In the solid state, all these complexes show characteristic emissions assigned to the corresponding lanthanide ion. In addition, the luminescence decay curves showed single-exponential decays with characteristic times in the millisecond range (0.75-0.90 ms for Eu^III , 0.045-0.060 ms for Sm^III , and 0.75-1.05 ms for Tb^III ).

Symmetry strategies for high performance lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets

Toward promising candidates of quantum information processing, the rapid development of lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs) highlights design strategies in consideration of the local symmetry of lanthanide ions. In this review, crystal-field theory is employed to demonstrate the electronic structures according to the semiquantitative electrostatic model. Then, specific symmetry elements are analysed for the elimination of transverse crystal fields and quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM). In this way, high-performance Ln-SMMs can be designed to enable extremely slow relaxation of magnetization, namely magnetic blocking; however, their practical magnetic characterization becomes increasingly challenging. Therefore, we will attempt to interpret the experimental behaviours and clarify some issues in detail. Finally, representative Ln-SMMs with specific local symmetries are summarized in combination with the discussion on the symmetry strategies, and some of the underlying questions are put forward.

A Piezochromic Dysprosium(III) Single-Molecule Magnet Based on an Aggregation-Induced-Emission-Active Tetraphenylethene Derivative Ligand

A bifunctional dysprosium(III) dimer, [Dy₂(HTPEIP^OMe)₂(OAc)₄(NO₃)₂] (1), comprising an AIE-active (AIE = aggregation-induced emission) ligand of 2-methoxy-6-[[[4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl]imino]methyl]phenol (HTPEIP^OMe), was successfully synthesized. It not only behaves as a single-molecule magnet (SMM) with an energy barrier of 168(15) K at zero field but also exhibits piezochromism during the pressing-fuming cycle with switchable color, photoluminescence, and magnetic response.
