Toward liquid cell quantum sensing: Ytterbium complexes with ultranarrow absorption

The energetic disorder induced by fluctuating liquid environments acts in opposition to the precise control required for coherence-based sensing. Overcoming fluctuations requires a protected quantum subspace that only weakly interacts with the local environment. We report a ytterbium complex that exhibited an ultranarrow absorption linewidth in solution at room temperature with a full width at half maximum of 0.625 milli-electron volts. Using spectral hole burning, we measured an even narrower linewidth of 410 pico-electron volts at 77 kelvin. Narrow linewidths allowed low-field magnetic circular dichroism at room temperature, used to sense Earth-scale magnetic fields. These results demonstrated that ligand protection in lanthanide complexes could substantially diminish electronic state fluctuations. We have termed this system an "atomlike molecular sensor" (ALMS) and proposed approaches to improve its performance.

Novel stable ytterbium acetylacetonate-quinaldinate complexes as single-molecule magnets and surprisingly efficient luminophores

The first Yb complexes comprising a quinoline-2-carboxylate (quinaldinate, Q-) ligand, namely 1D-polymeric [Yb(acac)2(Q)]n (1, acac- is the acetylacetonate (pentane-2,4-dionate) anion) and mononuclear [Yb(acac)2(Q)(Phen)] (2, Phen is 1,10-phenanthroline), are reported. The bifunctionality of both complexes as field-induced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and near IR luminophores has been revealed. The SMM properties of 1 and 2 have been discussed in terms of the geometry and composition of the coordination environment. Also, 1 is the first example of 1D-polymeric SMMs with the capped octahedral surrounding of Yb3+. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 1 and 2 are 2 and 4%, respectively. The origins of this difference are discussed. Surprisingly, the PLQY value of 2 is high for compounds comprising a lot of C-H vibrational quenchers, being the highest one for reliably characterized Yb β-diketonate complexes, and surpassing those for complexes with a broad range of anionic ligands. In this respect, the role of the Phen ligand is to tune the coordination mode of Q- thereby decreasing the energy of coordinating C-O oscillators rather than to act as a typical antenna ligand. These results can give rise to an alternative route to elaborate efficient Yb-based luminophores via the substitution of the β-diketonate ligands controlled by the introduction of appropriate neutral ligands.

Slow Magnetization Relaxation in a Family of Triangular {CoIII 2 LnIII } Clusters: The Effect of Diamagnetic CoIII Ions on the LnIII Magnetic Dynamics

The first use of the Schiff base chelate N-naphthalidene-o-aminophenol (naphH2 ) in Co/Ln chemistry has afforded a family of isostructural [CoIII 2 LnIII (OMe)2 (naph)2 (O2 CMe)3 (MeOH)2 ] (Ln=Tb, Dy and Er) complexes, revealing a rare {CoIII 2 Ln(μ3 -OMe)}8+ triangular core composed of two diamagnetic CoIII ions and a 4f-ion with slightly distorted square antiprismatic geometry. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that {Co2 Dy}, and its magnetic diluted analogue {Co2 Dy0.05 Y0.95 }, behave as mononuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with similar energy barriers for the magnetization reversal, Ueff , of ~85-90 K. SMM properties were also detected for {Co2 Er}, with the compound exhibiting a Ueff of 18.7 K under an applied magnetic field of 800 Oe. To interpret the experimental magnetic results, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO and DFT calculations were performed as a means of exploring the single-ion characteristics of LnIII ions and comprehend the role of the diamagnetic CoIII ions in the magnetization relaxation of the three heterometallic compounds.

DFT computations combined with semiempirical modeling of variations with temperature of spectroscopic and magnetic properties of Gd3+-doped PbTiO3

The rare-earth or 3d transition metal dopants in perovskites have potential to induce interesting features, thus opening opportunities for investigations and applications. Hence, understanding some features, i.e., defect structure, site of incorporation, valence state, and mechanism of charge compensation, in a wide range of temperature is crucial for their technological applications. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of structural changes in PbTiO₃ doped with trivalent rare-earths is significant for their potential applications in photonics. To unravel the structural changes, we utilize the density functional theory (DFT) to optimize structural data, which then serve as input for the semiempirical superposition model (SPM) analysis of spectroscopic and magnetic properties of Gd³⁺-doped PbTiO₃. We compute the formation energies of the doped compounds with and without O-vacancy to determine the stable composition. Analysis of the Bader electron charges computed using DFT plus quantum theory of atoms in molecules enables elucidating the effects of the Gd dopant and O-vacancy on the ionic and covalent bonds and, thereby, chemical stability of the compositions. To explain and corroborate the zero-field splitting parameters (ZFSPs) measured by EMR and the lattice parameter changes obtained from XRD, we employ SPM. The optimized structures obtained from ab initio computations for various structural models of Gd³⁺ doped PbTiO₃ are utilized as input data for SPM calculations of ZFPs. This enables theoretical analysis of variations of ZFSPs from 5 to 780 K. The results were fine-tuned by matching with available experimental EMR data for Gd³⁺ probes in PbTiO₃ nanoparticles. Modeling has been carried out considering several possible structural models and the role of an O-vacancy around Gd³⁺ centers. The results show that the two-fold modeling approach, combining DFT and SPM, provides a reliable description of experimental data. Comparative analysis indicates that the Ti-site is less favorable for being replaced by Gd³⁺ with/without O-vacancy. This analysis confirms the plausibility of the Pb²⁺ site for Gd³⁺ dopants and sheds light on the changes of crystal structure during the phase transitions occurring in PbTiO₃ with decreasing temperature.

Synthesis and Characterization of Lanthanide Metal Ion Complexes of New Polydentate Hydrazone Schiff Base Ligand

The new homodinuclear complexes of the general formula [Ln₂L₃(NO₃)₃] (where HL is newly synthesized 2-((2-(benzoxazol-2-yl)-2-methylhydrazono)methyl)phenol and Ln = Sm³⁺ (1), Eu³⁺ (2), Tb³⁺ (3a, 3b), Dy³⁺ (4), Ho³⁺ (5), Er³⁺ (6), Tm³⁺ (7), Yb³⁺ (8)), have been synthesized from the lanthanide(III) nitrates with the polydentate hydrazone Schiff base ligand. The flexibility of this unsymmetrical Schiff base ligand containing N₂O binding moiety, attractive for lanthanide metal ions, allowed for a self-assembly of these complexes. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data (ESI-MS, IR, UV/Vis, luminescence) and by the X-ray structure determination of the single crystals, all of which appeared to be different solvents. The analytical data suggested 2:3 metal:ligand stoichiometry in these complexes, and this was further confirmed by the structural results. The metal cations are nine-coordinated, by nitrogen and oxygen donor atoms. The complexes are two-centered, with three oxygen atoms in bridging positions. There are two types of structures, differing by the sources of terminal (non-bridging) coordination centers (group A: two ligands, one nitro anion/one ligand, two nitro anions, group B: three ligands, three anions).

An Exchange Mechanism for the Magnetic Behavior of Er3+ Complexes

We study the magnetic properties of the erbium based compounds, Na9[Er(W5O18)2] and [(Pc)Er{Pc{N(C4H9)2}8}]·/-, in the framework of an effective spin exchange model involving delocalized electrons occupying molecular orbitals. The calculations successfully reproduce the experimental data available in the literature for the magnetic spectrum, magnetization and molar susceptibility in dc and ac fields. Owing to their similar molecular geometry, the compounds' magnetic behaviors are interpreted in terms of the same set of active orbitals and thus the same effective spin coupling scheme. For all three complexes, the model predicts a prompt change in the ground state from a Kramer's doublet at zero fields to a fully polarized quartet one brought about by the action of an external magnetic field without Zeeman splitting. This alteration is attributed to the enhancement of the effect of orbital interactions over the spin exchange as the magnitude of the external magnetic field increases.

5-Aminopyridine-2-carboxylic acid as appropriate ligand for constructing coordination polymers with luminescence, slow magnetic relaxation and anti-cancer properties

Five new coordination polymers (CPs) constructed of aminopyridine-2-carboxylate (ampy) ligand have been synthesized and fully characterized. Three of them correspond to metal-organic chains built from the coordination of ampy to sodium and lanthanides with formulae [MNa(ampy)₄]_n (M = terbium (2), erbium (1) and ytterbium (3)) resembling a previously reported dysprosium material which shows anticancer activity. On another level, the reaction of Hampy with cobalt and copper ions ({[CoK(ampy)₃(H₂O)₃](H₂O)₃}_n (4) and [Cu(ampy)₂]_n (5)) lead to CPs with variable dimensionalities, which gives the opportunity of analyzing the structural properties of this new family. Lanthanide materials display solid state intense photoluminescent emissions in both the visible and near-infrared region and exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization with frequency dependence of the out-of-phase susceptibility. More interestingly, in our search for multifunctional materials, we have carried out antitumor measurements of these compounds. These multidisciplinary studies of metal complexes open up the possibility for further exploring the applications in the fields of metal-based drugs.

Why lanthanide ErIII SIMs cannot possess huge energy barriers: a theoretical investigation

New Artificial Biomimetic Enzyme Analogues based on Iron(II/III) Schiff Base Complexes: An Effect of (Benz)imidazole Organic Moieties on Phenoxazinone Synthase and DNA Recognition

Elucidation of the structure and function of biomolecules provides us knowledge that can be transferred into the generation of new materials and eventually applications in e.g., catalysis or bioassays. The main problems, however, concern the complexity of the natural systems and their limited availability, which necessitates utilization of simple biomimetic analogues that are, to a certain degree, similar in terms of structure and thus behaviour. We have, therefore, devised a small library of six tridentate N-heterocyclic coordinating agents (L¹-L⁶), which, upon complexation, form two groups of artificial, monometallic non-heme iron species. Utilization of iron(III) chloride leads to the formation of the 1:1 (Fe:L_n) 'open' complexes, whereas iron(II) trifluoromethanosulfonate allows for the synthesis of 1:2 (M:L_n) 'closed' systems. The structural differences between the individual complexes are a result of the information encoded within the metallic centre and the chosen counterion, whereas the organic scaffold influences the observed properties. Indeed, the number and nature of the external hydrogen bond donors coming from the presence of (benz)imidazole moieties in the ligand framework are responsible for the observed biological behaviour in terms of mimicking phenoxazinone synthase activity and interaction with DNA.

Towards comparative investigation of Er- and Yb-based SMMs: the effect of the coordination environment configuration on the magnetic relaxation in the series of heteroleptic thiocyanate complexes

We prepared and studied two similar series of Er and Yb thiocyanates, involving [Ln(H₂O)₅(NCS)₃]·H₂O (1Er, 1Yb) as well as the molecular and ionic complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenantroline (phen), [Ln(H₂O)(bpy)₂(NCS)₃]·0.5(bpy)·H₂O (2Er, 2Yb), [Ln(H₂O)(phen)₂(NCS)₃]·phen·0.5H₂O (3Er, 3Yb), [Hbpy][Ln(bpy)₂(NCS)₄]·H₂O (4Er, 4Yb) and [Hphen][Ln(phen)₂(NCS)₄] (5Er, 5Yb). All the complexes were found to exhibit the properties of field-induced single-molecule magnets. For 1Yb, the effective value of the energy barrier for magnetization reversal, Δ_eff/k_B, equals to 50 K, which is among the highest ones currently known for molecular SMMs based on Yb³⁺. The obtained data are discussed involving essential structural features of the complexes, namely the configuration of the Ln environment, i.e. its composition and geometry as well as mutual distribution of different donating centers. To the best of our knowledge, this work also involves experimental investigation of the largest and thus sufficiently representative series of similar mononuclear SMMs based on Er and Yb within one study.

Synthesis, Structures, and Single-Molecule Magnetic Properties of Three Dy2 Complexes

To explore the influences of the subtle structural variations in the ligand backbones on the single-molecule magnetic properties of dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, three ligands-H₂ L₁ (H₂ L₁ =N₁ ,N₃ -bis(salicylaldehyde)diethylenetriamine), H₂ L₂ (H₂ L₂ =N₁ ,N₃ -bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine), and H₂ L₃ (H₂ L₃ =N₁ ,N₃ -bis(5-chlorosalicyladehyde)diethylenetriamine)-were synthesized and employed to prepare the expected dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes. The three ligands differ in terms of the substituents at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde moieties. The reactions of Dy(NO₃ )₃ ⋅6 H₂ O, pivalic acid, and the ligands H₂ L₁ , H₂ L₂ , and H₂ L₃ generated complexes with the formulae [Dy₂ (L₁ )₂ (piv)₂ ] (1), [Dy₂ (L₂ )₂ (piv)₂ ] (2), and [Dy₂ (L₃ )₂ (piv)₂ ]⋅ 2 MeCN (3), respectively. The purposeful attachment of the functional groups with varied sizes at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde backbones resulted in slight differences in the Dy-O-Dy bond angles and the Dy⋅⋅⋅Dy bond lengths in 1-3; consequently, the three complexes exhibited distinct magnetic properties. They all showed slow magnetization relaxation with energy barriers of 40.32 (1), 31.67 (2), and 33.53 K (3). Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on complexes 1-3 to rationalize the slight discrepancy observed in the magnetic behavior. The calculated results satisfactorily explained the experimental outcomes.

Closing the Circle of the Lanthanide-Murexide Series: Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior and Near-Infrared Emission of the NdIII Derivative

Up to now, even if murexide-based complexometric studies are performed with all 3d or 4f ions, the crystal structures of the light-lanthanide derivatives of the lanthanide-murexide series are unknown. In this work, we report the crystal structure of the NdIII derivative named NdMurex. Contrary to all known complexes of the 3d or 4f series, a dimeric compound was obtained. As for its already reported DyIII and YbIII parents, the NdIII complex responsible for the color-change behaves as a single-molecule magnet (SMM). This behavior was observed on both the crystalline (NdMurex: Ueff = 6.20(0.80) K, 4.31 cm−1; τ0 = 2.20(0.92) × 10−5 s, Hdc = 1200 Oe) and anhydrous form (NdMurexAnhy: Ueff = 6.25(0.90) K, 4.34 cm−1; τ0 = 4.85(0.40) × 10−5 s, Hdc = 1200 Oe). The SMM behavior is reported also for the anhydrous CeIII derivative (CeMurexAnhy: Ueff = 5.40(0.75) K, 3.75 cm−1; τ0 = 3.02(1.10) × 10−5 s, Hdc = 400 Oe). The Near-Infrared Emission NIR emission was observed for NdMurexAnhy and highlights its bifunctionality.

Syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of a series of ZnII2LnIII2 compounds (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er): contrasting structural and magnetic features

In the five ZnII2LnIII2 compounds – (i) the Tb^III and Er^III analogues show slow relaxation of the magnetization, while the Ho^III system and, surprisingly, the Dy^III analogue don’t; (ii) the Gd^III system shows the MCE; and (iii) interestingly, the Ln–O bond length increases with the increase of atomic number.
