Tailored Water-Soluble Covalent Organic Cages for Encapsulation of Pyrene and Information Encryption

Forming pyridine salts to construct covalent organic cages is an effective strategy for constructing covalent cage compounds. Covalent organic cages based on pyridine salt structures are prone to form water-soluble supramolecular compounds. Herein, we designed and synthesized a triangular prism-shaped hexagonal cage with a larger cavity and relatively flexible conformation. The supramolecular cage structure was also applied to the encapsulation of pyrene and information encryption.

Sensitive Detection of Trace Explosives by a Self-Assembled Monolayer Sensor

Fluorescence probe technology holds great promise in the application of trace explosive detection due to its high sensitivity, fast response speed, good selectivity, and low cost. In this work, a designed approach has been employed to prepare the TPE-PA-8 molecule, utilizing the classic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethene (TPE), for the development of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) targeting the detection of trace nitroaromatic compound (NAC) explosives. The phosphoric acid acts as an anchoring unit, connecting to TPE through an alkyl chain of eight molecules, which has been found to play a crucial role in promoting the aggregation of TPE luminogens, leading to the enhanced light-emission property and sensing performance of SAMs. The SAMs assembled on Al2O3-deposited fiber film exhibit remarkable detection performances, with detection limits of 0.68 ppm, 1.68 ppm, and 2.5 ppm for trinitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, and nitrobenzene, respectively. This work provides a candidate for the design and fabrication of flexible sensors possessing the high-performance and user-friendly detection of trace NACs.

Mitochondria-Targeted Luminescent Organotin(IV) Complexes: Synthesis, Photophysical Characterization, and Live Cell Imaging

Five fluorescent ONO donor-based organotin(IV) complexes, [Sn^IV(L^1-5)Ph₂] (1-5), were synthesized by the one-pot reaction method and fully characterized spectroscopically including the single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 2-4. Detailed photophysical characterization of all compounds was performed. All the compounds exhibited high luminescent properties with a quantum yield of 17-53%. Additionally, the results of cellular permeability analysis suggest that they are lipophilic and easily absorbed by cells. Confocal microscopy was used to examine the live cell imaging capability of 1-5, and the results show that the compounds are mostly internalized in mitochondria and exhibit negligible cytotoxicity at imaging concentration. Also, 1-5 exhibited high photostability as compared to the commercial dye and can be used in long-term real-time tracking of cell organelles. Also, it is found that the probes (1-5) are highly tolerable during the changes in mitochondrial morphology. Thus, this kind of low-toxic organotin-based fluorescent probe can assist in imaging of mitochondria within living cells and tracking changes in their morphology.

Examination of aggregation-induced enhanced emission in a propeller-shaped chiral nonconjugated blue emitter from restricted intramolecular rotation and J-type ππ stacking interactions

Herein, to get rid of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) in the solid phase, which is generally observed in π-conjugated planar molecules, a new chiral nonconjugated molecule with the propeller-shaped blue emitter property was prepared and characterized, and its photoluminescence behavior in the solid and solution phases were investigated through single crystal X-ray crystallography and photophysical studies. To further understand the aggregation-induced enhanced emission process (AIEE), concentration effect and solvent effect on the fluorescence properties of the solution phase and fluorescence quantum yield measurements in the solid and solution states were performed. In addition, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), cyclic voltammogram measurements (CV) and theoretical analysis of the molecule were carried out. According to the results of the experimental work done, the molecule showed aggregation-induced enhanced blue emission (AIEE) in the crystal state, which arose from the strong J-type ππ stacking interactions between the adjacent rings of the molecules, and the restricted intramolecular rotation process (RIR). The solvent polarity-dependent emission also verified the AIEE process. Therefore, combining the advantages of nonconjugation and chirality properties in the synthesis of the molecule afforded a new, unusual AIEE material and provided a new way for the design of a nonconjugated chiral fluorescent optoelectronic material.

A simple "turn-on" fluorescence sensor for salicylaldehyde skeleton based on switch of PET-AIE effect

The selective detection of salicylaldehyde skeleton is of great significance in phytochemistry and biological research but rarely reported. In this research, a simple and highly selective "turn-on" fluorescence sensor (CDB-Am) for salicylaldehyde skeleton was developed based on switch of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE). CDB-Am bearing amino-cyanodistyrene structure responded to salicylaldehyde in the range of 3.1 to 40 μM with a detection limit of 0.94 μM. The sensing process of formation of Schiff-base adduct CDB-SA was confirmed by ¹H NMR, MS, and FT-IR spectra, revealing that a recovered AIE property accounted for the turn-on fluorescence response of CDB-Am and the intramolecular hydrogen bonding played a crucial role in the disruption of PET process. This sensing ability was successfully applied for both fluorescence qualitative test of salicylaldehyde skeleton on TLC analysis and quantitative detection of salicylaldehyde skeleton with good accuracy in the root bark of Periploca sepium, suggesting the extensive applications in phytochemistry and traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Furthermore, CDB-Am exhibited the first excellent fluorescence imaging ability in detecting salicylaldehyde skeleton in a living system. This work supplied a new strategy of preparing a novel "turn-on" fluorescence probe for detecting salicylaldehyde skeleton in complex environments and living bodies.

Green synthesis of fluorescent Schiff bases: chemo-photophysical characterization, X-ray structures, and their bioimaging

Two Schiff bases have been prepared by mechano- and ultrasound-assisted synthesis and their structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction. One of them showed good fluorescent cell staining in vitro and low cytotoxicity.

Reversible Chromatic Change of Supramolecular Gels for Visual and Selective Chiral Recognition of Histidine

In the present work, a chemical reaction has been performed for supramolecular gels to achieve multiple-stimuli-responsive smart soft materials. Simple chiral binaphthalene-based receptors can condense with histidine (His) to yield a Schiff base, which would help to achieve visual chiral recognition of unprotected l/d-His through gel formation along with specific selectivity toward 20 amino acids. Through intermolecular hydrogen bonds, the resultant Schiff base molecules assemble with excess His molecules to form three-dimensional (3D) networks of metastable cross-linked nanospheres and stable nanofibers in EtOH/water and MeOH/water, respectively. Significantly, this condensation reaction exhibits unique reversible and chromatic phenomena between sol-gel phase transitions in EtOH/water, which provide a way to design chemical reaction-based multivisual-change supramolecular gels for sensing and switching applications.

Ultralow-Molecular-Weight Stimuli-Responsive and Multifunctional Supramolecular Gels Based on Monomers and Trimers of Hydrazides

The simpler, the better. A series of simple, neutral and ultralow-molecular-weight (MW: 140-200) hydrazide-derived supramolecular gelators have been designed and synthesized in two straightforward steps. For non-conjugated cyclohexane-derived hydrazides, their monomers can self-assemble to form gels through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and dipole-dipole interactions. Significantly, conjugated phthalhydrazide can self-aggregate into planar and circular trimers through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and then self-assemble to form gels through intermolecular π-π stacking interactions. It is interesting that these simple gelators exhibit unusual properties, such as self-healing, multi-response fluorescence, and visual and selective recognition of chiral (R)/(S)-1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamine and S^2- through much different times of gel re-formation and blue-green color change, respectively. These results underline the importance of supramolecular gels and extend the scope of supramolecular gelators.

New barbituric acid derivatives for data encryption and decryption based on the mechanochromic fluorescence effect

Two barbituric acid derivatives CB-Ph and CB-Me were synthesized, both of which show a strong aggregation induced emission (AIE) effect. It was found that these two compounds show almost the same absorption and emission spectra. As a result, they show the same yellow color in daylight and the same yellow-green color under UV at 365 nm. Upon grinding, CB-Ph exhibits superior mechanochromic fluorescence (MCF) properties, with its fluorescence color from yellow-green (555 nm) to brown (580 nm) and its emission intensity decreases by 93%. However, neither the fluorescence peak wavelength nor the intensity of CB-Me shows observable changes after being ground, indicating no MCF effect. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data indicate that the CB-Ph powder changes from the crystalline to amorphous state after being ground, whereas CB-Me remains in its crystalline state. Molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) shows that CB-Ph takes a 3D conformation due to three phenyl groups on the periphery of the molecule, which hinders the molecules from aggregating closely and results in the change of the microstructure by external force stimuli. However, CB-Me aggregated more closely due to its better planarity and hydrophobic n-hexane group, which make it difficult to change the microstructure upon being ground. Based on the unique optical properties of CB-Ph and CB-Me, a new data encryption-decryption technology is developed. CB-Ph is used as cryptographic ink due to its excellent MCF effect upon grinding. CB-Me is used as a camouflage material as it shows the same color as CB-Ph in the daylight and under UV-365 nm; furthermore, its colors remain unchanged after being ground.

Effect of a bridge unit on the mechanochromism of phenothiazine-based Schiff bases

Nonconjugated Fluorescent Molecular Cages of Trinuclear Fluoroborate Complexes with Salicylaldehyde-Based Schiff Base Ligands

Fluorescent organic materials are commonly π-conjugated planar molecules. In the present work, however, we report a novel class of nonconjugated fluorescent molecular cages of trinuclear fluoroborate complexes (nine samples) with salicylaldehyde-based Schiff base ligands. Owing to the stress from lone pair electrons of N atom in the triethylamine bridge, these B(III) complexes exhibit unusual enantiomers with a tripodlike side-single-opening structure. They emit blue, green, and red emission with large Stokes shifts (up to 159 nm) and high fluorescence quantum yields in both solution (up to 0.24) and solid state (up to 0.25), which might contribute to their strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds and weak intermolecular and intramolecular π-π interactions. Combining their advantages of nonconjugation and biocompatibility, these flexible complexes have potential applications in living cell imaging and anion hosts. We have examined the inherent relationships between their chemical structures and emission properties and afforded a new stage for the design of nonconjugated fluorescent fluoroborate complexes.
