Mechanistic insights into H2 evolution via water splitting at the expense of B2(OH)4: a theoretical study

H₂ has been comprehensively deemed a promising potential candidate to replace traditional fossil fuel-based energy. Typically, the hydrolysis of most hydrogen-rich boron hydrides (e.g. NaBH₄, NH₃BH₃ and Me₂NHBH₃) catalyzed by nanomaterials generates H₂ with only one H atom supplied by water and the other one by a hydrogen-rich boron hydride. Interestingly, both H atoms of produced H₂ are provided by water upon hydrolysis of B₂(OH)₄. Herein, the catalytic mechanisms of H₂ evolution upon water splitting at the expense of B₂(OH)₄ in its hydrolysis reactions catalyzed by acid, base or metal nanoparticles have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. By computational studies, the mechanisms of catalysis by base and metal nanoparticles are basically the same as those speculated from our previous experiments. The previously proposed acid catalytic mechanism has been overturned, however. This study not only provides important insights into the catalytic mechanism for water splitting at the expense of B₂(OH)₄, but also opens up an exciting opportunity to use water to store H₂.

Chemoselective reduction of α,β-unsaturated ketones to allylic alcohols under catalyst-free conditions

A strategy of chemoselective reduction of α, β-unsaturated ketones was developed in our group. H3N·BH3 would prefer to coordinate with CO bond, forming six-membered ring, and ketones were hydrogenated via concerted double-hydrogen-transfer process.

Pd-Catalyzed Tandem Isomerization/Cyclization for the Synthesis of Aromatic Oxazaheterocycles and Pyrido[3,4-b]indoles

An effient tandem process consisting of palladium-catalyzed double-bond isomerization of long-chain olefins and subsequent intramolecular cyclization promoted by B₂(OH)₂ for the synthesis of aromatic oxazaheterocycles is disclosed. This strategy can also provide rapid access to pyrido[3,4-b]indoles, trans-2-olefins, and eneamides bearing various functional groups with high regio- and stereoselectivity.

Chan-Lam Amination of Secondary and Tertiary Benzylic Boronic Esters

We report a Chan-Lam coupling reaction of benzylic and allylic boronic esters with primary and secondary anilines to form valuable alkyl amine products. Both secondary and tertiary boronic esters can be used as coupling partners, with mono-alkylation of the aniline occurring selectively. This is a rare example of a transition-metal-mediated transformation of a tertiary alkylboron reagent. Initial investigation into the reaction mechanism suggests that transmetalation from B to Cu occurs through a single-electron, rather than a two-electron process.

Hydrogen-Bonding Controlled Nickel-Catalyzed Regioselective Cyclotrimerization of Terminal Alkynes

Herein we report a hydrogen-bonding controlled nickel-catalyzed regioselective cyclotrimerization of terminal alkynes in moderate to excellent yields with high regioselectivities toward 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzenes. This method features a cheap catalyst, mild reaction conditions, and excellent functional group compatibility. The Ni-B(OH)₂ complex in situ generated from NiCl₂·DME and tetrahydroxydiboron might act as an active catalyst. After three consecutive cis-additions of terminal alkynes, internal migratory insertion cyclization, and β-boron elimination induced aromatization, 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzenes were selectively established.

Application of Silicon-Initiated Water Splitting for the Reduction of Organic Substrates

The use of water as a donor for hydrogen suitable for the reduction of several important classes of organic compounds is described. It is found that the reductive water splitting can be promoted by several metalloids among which silicon shows the best efficiency. The developed methodologies were applied for the reduction of nitro compounds, N-oxides, sulfoxides, alkenes, alkynes, hydrodehalogenation as well as for the gram-scale synthesis of several substrates of industrial importance.

Reductive N-alkylation of primary and secondary amines using carboxylic acids and borazane under mild conditions

An expedient strategy of reductive N-alkylation of amines with readily available carboxylic acids as alkylating reagents has been developed.
