Recent advance in biomass membranes: Fabrication, functional regulation, and antimicrobial applications

Both inorganic and polymeric membranes have been widely applied for antimicrobial applications. However, these membranes exhibit low biocompatibility, weak biodegradability, and potential toxicity to human being and environment. Biomass materials serve as excellent candidates for fabricating functional membranes to address these problems due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. Here we present recent progress in the fabrication, functional regulation, and antimicrobial applications of various biomass-based membranes. We first introduce the types of biomass membranes and their fabrication methods, including the phase inversion, vacuum filtration, electrospinning, layer-by-layer self-assembly, and coating. Then, the strategies on functional regulation of biomass membranes by adding 0D, 1D, and 2D nanomaterials are presented and analyzed. In addition, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral applications of biomass-based functional membranes are summarized. Finally, potential development aspects of biomass membranes are discussed and prospected. This comprehensive review is valuable for guiding the design, synthesis, structural/functional tailoring, and sustainable utilization of biomass membranes.

Integrated biorefinery approach to valorize citrus waste: A sustainable solution for resource recovery and environmental management

Citrus fruits are extensively cultivated, consumed and major processed horticulture crops around the globe. High processing and consumption generate huge quantities of solid organic wastes. Citrus waste represents approximately 40-50% of total fruit weight, which consists of rag (membranes and cores), pulp, seeds, and peel (albedo and flavedo), which are a potential source of value-added products including essential oils, carotenoids, pectin, dietary fibers, and polyphenols biofuel, etc. However, waste produced is discarded as waste in the environment, which causes a serious threat due to the presence of bioactive compounds. Recent research strategies on the integrated biorefinery approach explore various ways to utilize the waste obtained from the citrus wastes for their subsequent recovery of value-added products. Moreover, the citrus waste can be turned into various bio-products, viz., enzymes, biofuels, and biopolymers using the integrated biorefinery approach, which can optimize the development of green waste for sustainability and economic benefits. Given the sustainable solution for resource recovery and environmental management, the article reviews the latest advances in the novel valorization approach and valuation of the existing state-of-the-art green technologies for citrus waste utilization to bring a sustainable solution for increasing demand for food, fuel, and energy security. To achieve the zero-waste approach and industrial viability, more efforts should be given to scale-up green recovery techniques along with diverse product profiling.

Efficient separation of acetylated cellulose from eucalyptus and its enhancement on the mechanical strength of polylactic acid

A simplified and green strategy was provided for the synthesis of cellulose acetate. Cellulose acetate (CA) was isolated from the directly acetylated eucalyptus powder after hydrothermal treatment to selectively remove hemicellulose without delignification. The conversion rate of cellulose (90.75%) and the yield of the acetylated product (61.34%) were greatly improved by hydrothermal treatment, while the re-condensation of lignin during hydrothermal treatment made no adverse difference. The characterization results verified that the acetylated product was cellulose acetate with uniform molecular weight, good thermal stability and semi-crystalline structure. Moreover, CA was used to reinforce polylactic acid (PLA) films prepared by solvent casting. The PLA-CA composite with 5 wt% CA showed an increase of 80.63% in tensile strength and 59.51% in Young's modulus, and their density decreased from 1.2427 g/cm³ to 1.0028 g/cm³. The lightweight and excellent mechanical properties promote the application potential of biodegradable composites to replace petroleum-based plastics.
