Lysozyme functionalized silver nanoclusters as a dual channel optical sensor for the effective determination of glutathione

This article describes the development of a facile and efficient fluorescence sensor for the determination of glutathione (GSH). Presence of the antioxidant glutathione in blood serum is considered as a biomarker for catastrophe like colorectal cancer. Silver nanoclusters with strong fluorescence and good water solubility synthesized from relatively cheaper precursors are one of the species very much explored in fluorescence sensors and bioimaging. Here, Chicken egg derived-lysozyme functionalized silver nanoclusters (Lyz AgNCs) with red fluorescence emission has been synthesized and developed to a turn-off fluorescence sensor for GSH through which colorimetric determination is also possible. Due to the ground state 'Ag-S' interaction between Lyz AgNCs and GSH, the determination of the analyte is possible from 1.00 × 10-5 M to 1.00 × 10-6 M via fluorimetric and from 9.00 × 10-6 to 8.00 × 10-7 M via spectrophotometric techniques with a limit of detection 2.86 × 10-7 M and 4.76 × 10-7 M, respectively. Selectivity of the sensor has been studied and applicability of the sensor in artificial blood serum samples has been demonstrated.

Biomolecule-Enabled Liquid Separation Membranes: Potential and Recent Progress

The implementation of membrane surface modification to enhance the performance of membrane-based separation has become a favored strategy due to its promise to address the trade-off between water permeability and salt rejection as well as to improve the durability of the membranes. Tremendous work has been committed to modifying polymeric membranes through physical approaches such as surface coating and ontology doping, as well as chemical approaches such as surface grafting to introduce various functional groups to the membrane. In the context of liquid separation membranes applied for desalination and water and wastewater treatment, biomolecules have gained increasing attention as membrane-modifying agents due to their intriguing structural properties and chemical functionalities. Biomolecules, especially carbohydrates and proteins, exhibit attractive features, including high surface hydrophilicity and zwitterionic and antimicrobial properties that are desired for liquid separation membranes. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent developments in biomolecule-enabled liquid separation membranes. The roles and potentials of some commonly explored biomolecules in heightening the performance of polymeric membranes are discussed. With the advancements in material synthesis and the need to answer the call for more sustainable materials, biomolecules could serve as attractive alternatives for the development of high-performance composite membranes.

Improved Biomedical Properties of Polydopamine-Coated Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) due to their outstanding mechanical, thermal, chemical, and optical properties were utilized as a base material and were coated with polydopamine (PDA) (PDA@CNT) via the simple self-polymerization of dopamine (DA). Then, PDA@CNT coatings of up to five layers were examined for potential biomedical applications. The success of multiple coating of CNTs with PDA was confirmed via increased weight loss values with the increased number of PDA coatings of CNTs at 500 °C by thermogravimetric analysis. The surface area of bare CNTs was measured as 263.9 m2/g and decreased to 197.0 m2/g after a 5th coating with PDA. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities of CNT and PDA@CNTs were determined via total flavonoid content (TFC), total phenol content (TPC), and Fe(III)-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) tests, revealing the increased antioxidant ability of PDA@CNTs with the increasing numbers of PDA coatings. Moreover, a higher inhibition percentage of the activity of the alpha-glucosidase enzyme with 95.1 ± 2.9% inhibition at 6 mg/mL PDA-1st@CNTs concentration was found. The CNT and PDA@CNTs exhibited blood compatibility, less than a 2.5% hemolysis ratio, and more than 85% blood clotting indexes. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of PDA-5th@CNTs against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was determined as 10 mg/mL.

Fighting corrosion with stimuli-responsive polymer conjugates

Corrosion is a financial and enviromental plague which leads to the deterioration of our infrastructures. Using corrosion inhibitors at low concentrations in coatings is one effective method for preventing corrosion. Inspired by the development of polymer-drug conjugates, corrosion inhibitors are incorporated in various polymer structures to create novel materials for hindering corrosion. We discuss the strategies to covalently integrate corrosion inhibitors in polymer structures to form polymer-inhibitor conjugates. Inhibitors are conjugated to polymers via non-labile or stimuli-labile linkages to allow the release of the inhibitors upon onset of corrosion. The application and anticorrosion performance of representative polymers are also discussed.

Single-step grown boron doped nanocrystalline diamond-carbon nanograss hybrid as an efficient supercapacitor electrode

Direct synthesis of a nano-structured carbon hybrid consisting of vertically aligned carbon nanograsses on top of boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond is demonstrated and the carbon hybrid is further applied as an electrode material for the fabrication of supercapacitors. The hybrid film combines the dual advantages of sp2 (carbon nanograss) and sp3 (nanocrystalline diamond) bonded carbon, possessing not only the excellent electrical characteristics of sp2 carbon but also the exceptional electrochemical stability of sp3 carbon. As a result, the specific capacitance of the as-prepared hybrid material reaches up to 0.4 F cm-2, one of the highest reported in diamond-based supercapacitors. The entire electrochemical results exhibit enhanced electron transfer efficiency with remarkable stability of 95% of capacitance retention even after 10 000 cycles.

Magneto-mechanical actuation of magnetic responsive fibrous scaffolds boosts tenogenesis of human adipose stem cells

Tendons are highly specialized load-bearing tissues with very limited healing capacity. Given their mechanosensitive nature, the combination of tendon mimetic scaffolds with remote mechanical actuation could synergistically contribute to the fabrication of improved tissue engineered alternatives for the functional regeneration of tendons. Here, hybrids of cellulose nanocrystals decorated with magnetic nanoparticles were produced to simultaneously reinforce and confer magnetic responsiveness to tendon mimetic hierarchical fibrous scaffolds, resulting in a system that enables remote stimulation of cells in vitro and, potentially, in vivo after construct transplantation. The biological performance and functionality of these scaffolds were evaluated using human adipose stem cells (hASCs) cultured under or in the absence of magnetic actuation. It was demonstrated that magneto-mechanical stimulation of hASCs promotes higher degrees of cell cytoskeleton anisotropic organization and steers the mechanosensitive YAP/TAZ signaling pathway. As feedback, stimulated cells show increased expression of tendon-related markers, as well as a pro-healing profile in genes related to their inflammatory secretome. Overall, these results support the use of the proposed magnetic responsive fibrous scaffolds as remote biointegrated actuators that can synergistically boost hASC tenogenesis through mechanosensing mechanisms and may modulate their pro-healing paracrine signaling, thus collectively contributing to the improvement of the regenerative potential of engineered tendon grafts.

Mussel-Inspired Self-Healing Coatings Based on Polydopamine-Coated Nanocontainers for Corrosion Protection

The mussel-inspired properties of dopamine have attracted immense scientific interest for surface modification of nanoparticles due to the high potential of dopamine functional groups to increase the adhesion of nanoparticles to flat surfaces. Here, we report for the first time a novel type of inhibitor-loaded nanocontainer using polydopamine (PDA) as a pH-sensitive gatekeeper for mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). The encapsulated inhibitor (benzotriazole) was loaded into MSNs at neutral pH, demonstrating fast release in an acidic environment. The self-healing effect of water-borne alkyd coatings doped with nanocontainers was achieved by both on-demand release of benzotriazole during the corrosion process and formation of the complexes between the dopamine functional groups and iron oxides, thus providing dual self-healing protection for the mild steel substrate. The coatings were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, visual observations, and confocal Raman microscopy. In all cases, the coatings with embedded benzotriazole-loaded MSNs with PDA-decorated outer surfaces demonstrated superior self-healing effects on the damaged areas. We anticipate that dopamine-based multifunctional gatekeepers can find application potential not only in intelligent self-healing anticorrosive coatings but also in drug delivery, antimicrobial protection, and other fields.

Polydopamine Surface Chemistry: A Decade of Discovery

Polydopamine is one of the simplest and most versatile approaches to functionalizing material surfaces, having been inspired by the adhesive nature of catechols and amines in mussel adhesive proteins. Since its first report in 2007, a decade of studies on polydopamine molecular structure, deposition conditions, and physicochemical properties have ensued. During this time, potential uses of polydopamine coatings have expanded in many unforeseen directions, seemingly only limited by the creativity of researchers seeking simple solutions to manipulating surface chemistry. In this review, we describe the current state of the art in polydopamine coating methods, describe efforts underway to uncover and tailor the complex structure and chemical properties of polydopamine, and identify emerging trends and needs in polydopamine research, including the use of dopamine analogs, nitrogen-free polyphenolic precursors, and improvement of coating mechanical properties.

Water-repellent and corrosion-resistance properties of superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused super slippery surfaces

Inspired by lotus leaves and pitcher plants, superhydrophobic surfaces and super slippery surfaces have been fabricated to improve the characteristics of AZ31 magnesium alloy surfaces.
