Carbazole Substituted BODIPYs

Difluoroboron-dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are highly popular fluorescent dyes with applications as NIR probes for bioimaging, fluorescent tags/sensors and as photosensitizers in cancer therapy and organic photovoltaics. This review concentrates on the synthesis and spectral properties of BODIPY dyes conjugated with carbazole heterocycle. The carbazole is an electron rich tricyclic compound and due to its excellent electronic properties, it is extensively used in the production of electroluminescent materials and polymers. This review highlights the recent progress made on the series of BODIPY derivatives containing carbazole ring at alpha, beta, and meso-positions of the BODIPY skeleton. Carbazole based hybrid BODIPYs, carbazole linked aza-BODIPYs and carbazole-fused BODIPYs are also discussed.

Effect of thienyl units in cyanoacrylic acid derivatives toward dye-sensitized solar cells

A series of heterocyclic donor-acceptor systems were synthesized and well characterized by using ¹H, ¹³C NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. They were designed to investigate the effect of thiophene and cyanoacrylic acid number units on the thermal, optical, electrochemical and finally photovoltaic properties of dye-sensitized solar cells prepared with the selected compounds. The effect of chemical structure on their properties was demonstrated. They showed the beginning of thermal decomposition between 230 and 270 °C. The compounds absorbed the radiation in the range of 300-500 nm or 200-400 nm. They were electrochemically active and varied in energy band gap from 3.40 to 1.58 eV. Additionally, their optimized geometry, HOMO-LUMO levels, ionization potential, and electron affinity were evaluated using density functional theory. The photovoltaic devices based on TiO₂ sensitized with the obtained molecules exhibited low power conversion efficiency, which was the highest for the device containing the symmetrical molecule with bithiophene structure. Under co-sensitization, the cell made of the same compound gave significant enhancement of efficiency of 6.3% being higher to that of the individual device prepared from dye N719 (5.75%). Moreover, the effects of immersion time of TiO₂ electrode in the dye solution and co-sensitization methods were tested. The surface morphology of photoanode was investigated using atomic force microscopy.

New 2D–π–2A organic dyes with bipyridine anchoring groups for DSSCs

Synthesis of near-infrared absorbing and fluorescing thiophene-fused BODIPY dyes with strong electron-donating groups and their application in dye-sensitised solar cells

Thiophene-fused BODIPY dyes with two diethylaminophenyl groups as strong donors demonstrated near-infrared (NIR) absorption (λ_max: 783–812 nm, ε: 119 500–145 900) and fluorescence (F_max: 862–916 nm, Φ_f: 0.02–0.12) in dichloromethane.

Highly efficient stereoscopic phenothiazine dyes with different anchors for dye-sensitized solar cells

For DSSCs based on stereoscopic phenothiazine dyes, JA6 with a cyanoacrylic acid anchor shows the highest PCE of 7.34%.

The self-assembly of monosubstituted BODIPY and HFBI-RGD

A novel fluorescent probe was constructed by the self-assembly of monosubstituted BODIPY and a novel targeted hydrophobin named hereafter as HFBI-RGD. Optical measurements and theoretical calculations confirmed that the spectral properties of the probe were greatly influenced by the BODIPY structure, the appropriate volume of BODIPY and the cavity of HFBI-RGD. The experiments in vivo and ex vivo demonstrated that the probe had excellent ability for tumor labelling.

BODIPYs for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

BODIPY, abbreviation of boron-dipyrromethene, is one class of robust organic molecules that has been used widely in bioimaging, sensing, and logic gate design. Recently, BODIPY dyes have been explored for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Studies demonstrate their potential as light absorbers for the conversion of solar energy to electricity. However, their photovoltaic performance is inferior to many other dyes, including porphyrin dyes. In this review, several synthetic strategies of BODIPY dyes for DSCs and their further functionalization are described. The photophysical properties of dye molecules and their photovoltaic performances in DSCs are summarized. We aim to provide readers a clear picture of the field and expect to shed light on the next generation of BODIPY dyes for their applications in solar energy conversion.

Investigation of the structure and opto-electronic properties of substituted 2,2′-bithiophenes as π-building blocks: a joint experimental and theoretical study

Substituted 2,2′-bithiophenes with enhanced properties and suppressed aggregation in polymers are revealed to be used as π-linkers in D–π–A materials.

Synthesis of a dibenzo-BODIPY-incorporating phenothiazine dye as a panchromatic sensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cells

The introduction of dibenzo-BODIPY into a phenothiazine dye led to the production of a panchromatic sensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cells, a cell with the dye showing a PCE (η) value of 7.69%.
