Enhanced Cycling Performance of a Li-Excess Li2CuO2 Cathode Additive by Cosubstitution Nanoarchitectonics of Ni and Mn for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The adoption of Li₂CuO₂ has drawn interest as a Li-excess cathode additive for compensating irreversible Li⁺ loss in anodes during cycling, which would move forward high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Li₂CuO₂ provides a high irreversible capacity (>200 mAh g^-1) in the first cycle and an operating voltage comparable with commercial cathode materials, but its practical use is still restricted by the structural instability and spontaneous oxygen (O₂) evolution, resulting in poor overall cycling performance. It is thus crucial to reinforce the structure of Li₂CuO₂ to make it more reliable as a cathode additive for charge compensation. Pursuing the structural stability of Li₂CuO₂, herein, we demonstrate cosubstitution by heteroatoms, such as nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn), for improving the structural stability and electrochemical performance of Li₂CuO₂. Such an approach effectively enhances the reversibility of Li₂CuO₂ by suppressing continuous structural degradation and O₂ gas evolution during cycling. Our findings provide new conceptual pathways for developing advanced cathode additives for high-energy LIBs.

Biomimetic mineralization based on self-assembling peptides

Biomimetic science has attracted great interest in the fields of chemistry, biology, materials science, and energy. Biomimetic mineralization is the process of synthesizing inorganic minerals under the control of organic molecules or biomolecules under mild conditions. Peptides are the motifs that constitute proteins, and can self-assemble into various hierarchical structures and show a high affinity for inorganic substances. Therefore, peptides can be used as building blocks for the synthesis of functional biomimetic materials. With the participation of peptides, the morphology, size, and composition of mineralized materials can be controlled precisely. Peptides not only provide well-defined templates for the nucleation and growth of inorganic nanomaterials but also have the potential to confer inorganic nanomaterials with high catalytic efficiency, selectivity, and biotherapeutic functions. In this review, we systematically summarize research progress in the formation mechanism, nanostructural manipulation, and applications of peptide-templated mineralized materials. These can further inspire researchers to design structurally complex and functionalized biomimetic materials with great promising applications.

Regulated electrochemical performance of manganese oxide cathode for potassium-ion batteries: A combined experimental and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) investigation

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are promising energy storage devices owing to their low cost, environmental-friendly, and excellent K⁺ diffusion properties as a consequence of the small Stoke's radius. The evaluation of cathode materials for KIBs, which are perhaps the most favorable substitutes to lithium-ion batteries, is of exceptional importance. Manganese dioxide (α-MnO₂) is distinguished by its tunnel structures and plenty of electroactive sites, which can host cations without causing fundamental structural breakdown. As a result of the satisfactory redox kinetics and diffusion pathways of K⁺ in the structure, α-MnO₂ nanorods cathode prepared through hydrothermal method, reversibly stores K⁺ at a fast rate with a high capacity and stability. It has a first discharge capacity of 142 mAh/g at C/20, excellent rate execution up to 5C, and a long cycling performance with a demonstration of moderate capacity retention up to 100 cycles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirm that the K⁺ intercalation/deintercalation occurs through 0.46 K movement between Mn^IV/Mn^III redox pairs. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict a diffusion barrier of 0.31 eV for K⁺ through the 1D tunnel of α-MnO₂ electrode, which is low enough to promote faster electrochemical kinetics. The nanorod structure of α-MnO₂ facilitates electron conductive connection and provides a strong electrode-electrolyte interface for the cathode, resulting in a very consistent and prevalent execution cathode material for KIBs.

Cancer-Responsive Multifunctional Nanoplatform Based on Peptide Self-Assembly for Highly Efficient Combined Cancer Therapy by Alleviating Hypoxia and Improving the Immunosuppressive Microenvironment

Hypoxia, as a main feature of the tumor microenvironment, has greatly limited the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT), as well as its clinical application. Here, a multifunctional composite nanoplatform, the peptide/Ce6/MnO₂ nanocomposite (RKCM), has been constructed to alleviate tumor hypoxia and increase the efficacy of PDT using rationally designed peptide fibrils to encapsulate chlorin e6 (Ce6) inside and to mineralize MnO₂ nanoparticles on the surface. As a result, RKCM significantly improved the PDT efficacy by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, decreasing tumor cell viability, and inhibiting tumor growth and metastasis. Besides, decreased HIF-1α expression and increased immune-activated cell infiltration were also observed in RKCM/laser treatment xenograft. Mechanically, (1) Ce6 can induce singlet oxygen (¹O₂) generation under laser irradiation to give photodynamic therapy (PDT); (2) MnO₂ can react with H₂O₂ in situ to supply additional O₂ to alleviate tumor hypoxia; and (3) the released Mn²⁺ ions can induce a Fenton-like reaction to generate ^•OH for chemical dynamic therapy (CDT). Moreover, RKCM/laser treatment also presented with an abscopal effect to block the occurrence of lung metastasis by remolding the pre-metastasis immune microenvironment. With these several aspects working together, the peptide/Ce6/MnO₂ nanoplatform can achieve highly efficient tumor therapy. Such a strategy based on peptide self-assembly provides a promising way to rationally design a cancer-responsive multifunctional nanoplatform for highly efficient combined cancer therapy by alleviating hypoxia and improving the immune microenvironment.

Polypyrrole-Stabilized Polypeptide for Eco-Friendly Supercapacitors

As an energy storage technology, supercapacitors (SCs) have become an important part of many electronic systems because of their high-power density, long cycle life, and maintenance-free characteristics. However, the widespread development and use of electronics, including SCs, have led to the generation of a large amount of e-waste. In addition, achieving compatibility between stability and biodegradability has been a prominent challenge for implantable electronics. Therefore, environmentally friendly SCs based on polypyrrole (PPy)-stabilized polypeptide (FF) are demonstrated in this study. The fully degradable SC has a layer-by-layer structure, including polylactic acid/chitosan (PLA-C) support layers, current collectors (Mg), FF/PPy composite layers, and a polyvinyl alcohol/phosphate buffer solution (PVA/PBS) hydrogel. It has the advantages of being light, thin, flexible, and biocompatible. After 5000 cycles in air, the capacitance retention remains at up to 94.7%. The device could stably operate for 7 days in a liquid environment and completely degrade in vitro within 90 days without any adverse effect on the environment. This work has important implications for eco-friendly electronics and will have a significant impact on the implantable biomedical electronics.

Peptide-mediated green synthesis of the MnO2@ZIF-8 core-shell nanoparticles for efficient removal of pollutant dyes from wastewater via a synergistic process

The MnO₂@ZIF-8 core-shell nanoparticles for highly efficient dye degradation have been synthesized with a green method. ZIF-8 crystals with controlled morphology and size are first synthesized by using peptide to modulate the crystal growth. MnO₂ is then coated on ZIF-8 via in situ reaction. The surface MnO₂ density can be controlled by the dosage of KMnO₄. The MnO₂@ZIF-8 nanoparticles work as photocatalyst to degrade rhodamine B in a Fenton-like process, giving a degradation ratio of > 96.0%. The degradation kinetics comply well with the Pseudo-second-order model and the experimental equilibrium data meet the Langmuir model best. The specific hierarchical structure of MnO₂@ZIF-8 assures a synergistic enhancement of the catalytic degradation performance from several aspects. First, anchoring of the MnO₂ nanoparticles on ZIF-8 allows their well disperse to provide more active surface area. Second, highly porous ZIF-8 can adsorb dye molecules to accumulate them at the surface reactive sites. Third, the MnO₂/ZIF-8 nano-heterojunctions enhance charge carrier transfer and accelerate the production of free oxidative radicals. The study demonstrates a green method for fabrication of hierarchical hybrid structures, paving the way for designing novel photocatalysts with potential applications for wastewater treatment.

Electrochemically grown MnO2 nanowires for supercapacitor and electrocatalysis applications

In this study, MnO₂ nanowires are electrochemically grown over a 3D nickel foam (NF) substrate using cyclicvoltammetry at 27 °C; furthermore, their potential for applications in supercapacitors and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highlighted.

Hydroxyapatite Formation on Self-Assembling Peptides with Differing Secondary Structures and Their Selective Adsorption for Proteins

Self-assembling peptides have been employed as biotemplates for biomineralization, as the morphologies and sizes of the inorganic materials can be easily controlled. We synthesized two types of highly ordered self-assembling peptides with different secondary structures and investigated the effects of secondary structures on hydroxyapatite (HAp) biomineralization of peptide templates. All as-synthesized HAp-peptides have a selective protein adsorption capacity for basic protein (e.g., cytochrome c and lysozyme). Moreover, the selectivity was improved as peptide amounts increased. In particular, peptide-HAp templated on β-sheet peptides adsorbed more cytochrome c than peptide-HAp with α-helix structures, due to the greater than 2-times carboxyl group density at their surfaces. It can be expected that self-assembled peptide-templated HAp may be used as carriers for protein immobilization in biosensing and bioseparation applications and as enzyme-stabilizing agents.

Design, Sustainable Synthesis, and Programmed Reactions of Templated N-Heteroaryl-Fused Vinyl Sultams

A de novo design and synthesis of N-heteroaryl-fused vinyl sultams as templates for programming chemical reactions on vinyl sultam periphery or (hetero)aryl ring is described. The key features include rational designing and sustainable synthesis of the template, customized reactions of vinyl sultams at C═C bond or involving N-S bond cleavage, and reactions on the periphery of the heteroaryl ring for late-stage diversification. The simple, easy access to the template coupled with opportunities for the synthesis of diversely functionalized heterocyles from a single template constitutes a rare study in contemporary organic synthesis.

Hierarchical branched α-MnO2: one-step synthesis and catalytic activity

The hierarchical pine tree-like α-MnO₂are controlled synthesized at room temperature without any template. The α-MnO₂displays superior activity in the catalytic combustion of dimethyl ether.
