Lignin phenolation by graft copolymerization to boost its reactivity

Lignin is the most abundant phenolic biopolymer and a renewable resource of aromatics. It can be used as a phenol substitute in the synthesis of phenolic resins. However, lignin is not as reactive as phenol, so phenolation is generally carried out to improve lignin reactivity. In this work, we suggest a solution to circumvent the limitations of traditional phenolation (e.g., high temperature, strong acids/bases, limited reactivity, and phenol toxicity). We first attempt new lignin phenolation by graft copolymerization in which polymeric phenol, instead of toxic phenol, is introduced to lignin. Organosolv lignin from hardwood was modified with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide to act as a lignin macroinitiator (L-Br). A protected phenolic monomer, 4-acetoxystyrene, was graft copolymerized onto L-Br using CuBr2/tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine as a catalyst/ligand, after which the resultant lignin copolymer was deacetylated to produce lignin grafted with poly(4-hydroxystyrene). This poly-phenolation process was conducted at room temperature without the strong acids/bases and toxic phenol required in conventional phenolation. The poly-phenolated lignin was analyzed using 1H-, 13C-, and 31P NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. This novel phenolation process enhanced the reactive sites of lignin more than tenfold. It also reduced the dark color of technical lignins significantly, thereby overcoming a serious obstacle to their applicability.

Isospecific Polymerization of Halide- and Amino-Substituted Styrenes Using a Bis(phenolate) Titanium Catalyst

Isospecific polymerization of polar styrenes is a challenge of polymer science. Particularly challenging are monomers bearing electron-withdrawing substituents or bulky substituents. Here, we report the coordination polymerization of halide- and amino-functionalized styrenes including para-fluorostyrene (pFS), para-chlorostyrene (pClS), para-bromostyrene (pBrS), and para-(N,N-diethylamino)styrene (DMAS) using 2,2′-sulfur-bridged bis(phenolate) titanium precursor (1). The combination of 1 and [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] and AliBu3 provides crystalline poly(pFS)s with perfect isotacticity (mmmm > 95%) and high molecular weights (≤16.0 × 104 g mol−1). Upon activation with a large excess of DMAO, 1 reaches polymerization activity of 5.58 × 105 g molTi−1 h−1 producing isotactic poly(pFS)s featuring higher molecular weights (≤39.6 × 104 g mol−1). The distinguished performance of the 1/DMAO system has been extended to the polymerization of pClS and pBrS, both usually involve halogen abstraction during the polymerization, to produce isotactic and high molecular weight (Mn = 32.2 × 104 vs. 13.7 × 104 g mol−1) polymers in good activities (2.18 × 105 vs. 1.31 × 105 g molTi−1 h−1). Surprisingly, 1/DMAO is nearly inactive for DMAS polymerization, on contrary, the system 1/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]/AliBu3 displays isoselectivity (mmmm > 95%) albeit in a moderate activity.

Titanium complex with an [OSSO]-type bis(phenolate) ligand for ethylene copolymerization with vinyl polar monomer based on group protection

The [OSSO]-type bis(phenolate) titanium complex 1 activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO) was tested as a homogeneous catalyst for ethylene coordination copolymerization with protected vinyl polar monomer of p-tert-butyl-dimethylsilyloxystyrene (p-TBDMSOS). The results showed that the active species were almost not poisonous to the catalyst by the protected vinyl polar monomer. Moreover, the composition and sequence length as well as sequence distribution in the copolymers were investigated by theoretical calculation and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (¹³C NMR) characterization. Especially, the incorporation ratio of p-TBDMSOS into the polyethylene chain could be controlled by changing p-TBDMSOS concentration in the feed. Interestingly, an approximate alternating copolymer of poly(E-alt-(p-TBDMSOS)) could be formed when the p-TBDMSOS feed concentration increased to 1.0 mol L⁻¹. Subsequently, the poly(ethylene-co-(p-hydroxystyrene)) (poly(E-co-(p-HOS))) could be prepared by a facile deprotection in terms of desilylation of tert-butyldimethylsilyl ether. The hydrophilicity of poly(E-co-(p-HOS)) films were investigated by water contact angle measurements.

The [OSSO]-type bis(phenolate) titanium complex 1 activated by methylaluminoxane was used for the copolymerization of ethylene and protected vinyl polar monomer.
