Supramolecular Chromatographic Separation of C60 and C70 Fullerenes: Flash Column Chromatography vs. High Pressure Liquid Chromatography

A silica-bound C-butylpyrogallol[4]arene chromatographic stationary phase was prepared and characterised by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, NMR and mass spectrometry. The chromatographic performance was investigated by using C60 and C70 fullerenes in reverse phase mode via flash column and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The resulting new stationary phase was observed to demonstrate size-selective molecular recognition as postulated from our in-silico studies. The silica-bound C-butylpyrogallol[4]arene flash and HPLC stationary phases were able to separate a C60- and C70-fullerene mixture more effectively than an RP-C18 stationary phase. The presence of toluene in the mobile phase plays a significant role in achieving symmetrical peaks in flash column chromatography.

Analytical and preparative separation and isolation of functionalized fullerenes by conventional HPLC stationary phases: method development and column screening

Isolation and purification of functionalized fullerenes from often complex reaction mixtures is challenging due to the hydrophobic nature and low solubility in regular organic solvents. We have developed an HPLC method that efficiently, employing regular reversed phase stationary phases, separates not only C₆₀ from C₇₀ in a model mixture, but also C₆₀ monoadducts from polyadducts and unreacted C₆₀ from fulleropyrrolidine and hydroarylation example reaction mixtures. Six HPLC columns with regular reversed phase stationary phases were evaluated using varying proportions of acetonitrile in toluene as eluent; with C18 and C12 stationary phases with high surface area (450–400 m² g⁻¹) being the most efficient regarding separation efficiency and analysis time for all mixtures. The analytical method is effectively transferrable to a preparative scale to isolate the monoaddition products from complex fullerene reaction mixtures.

π-Concave Hosts for Curved Carbon Nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials have been at the forefront of nanotechnology since its inception. At the heart of this research are the curved carbon nanomaterial families: fullerenes and carbon nanotubes. While both have incredible properties that have been capitalized upon in a wide variety of applications, there is an aspect that is not commonly exploited by nanoscientists and organic chemists alike: the interaction of curved carbon nanomaterials with curved organic small molecules. By taking advantage of these interactions, new avenues are opened for the use of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes.
