Dual Applications of Cobalt-Oxide-Grafted Carbon Quantum Dot Nanocomposite for Two Electrode Asymmetric Supercapacitors and Photocatalytic Behavior

Carbon materials, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and quantum-dot-doped metal oxides, are highly attractive for energy storage and environmental applications. This is due to their large surface area and efficient optical and electrochemical activity. In this particular study, a composite material of cobalt oxide and carbon quantum dots (Co3O4-CQD) was prepared using cobalt nitrate and ascorbic acid (carbon source) through a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The properties of the composite material, including the functional groups, composition, surface area, and surface morphology, were evaluated by using various methods such as ultraviolet, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The electrochemical performance of the Co3O4-CQD composite has been studied using a three-electrode system. The results show that at 1 A g-1, the composite delivers a higher capacitance of 1209 F g-1. The asymmetric supercapacitor (Co3O4-CQD//AC) provided 13.88 W h kg-1 energy and 684.65 W kg-1 power density with a 96% capacitance retention. The Co3O4-CQD composite also demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity (90% in 60 min) for the degradation of methylene blue dye under UV irradiation, which is higher than that of pristine Co3O4 and CQD. This demonstrates that the Co3O4-CQD composite is a promising material for commercial energy storage and environmental applications.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds over carbon quantum dots decorated Bi2WO6 under visible light

A series of CQDs/Bi₂WO₆ (CBW) hybrid materials with different loading amounts of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared via a facile in situ hydrothermal method. As determined by multiple techniques including XRD, TEM, UV-vis, PL, TPR, and XPS, the CBW possessed expanded visible light response interval, decreased recombination rate of the photogenerated electron hole, and enhanced oxidation ability as compared with the pristine Bi₂WO₆. In addition, with different loading amounts of CQDs, the optical and electronic properties of the corresponding CBW were different. These CBW materials performed superior activities to the pristine Bi₂WO₆ in the photodegradation of VOCs under visible light, among which the CBW-2 demonstrated the best activity of almost complete degradation within only 120 min. Moreover, the CBW-2 exhibited high stability and reusability after five cycles.

CO2 photoreduction to CO/CH4 over Bi2W0.5Mo0.5O6 solid solution nanotubes under visible light

In this work, Bi₂W_0.5Mo_0.5O₆ solid solution nanotubes have been synthesized through a structure-directing hard template approach, which demonstrated greatly enhanced CO₂ photoreduction to CO/CH₄. The crystalline phase, components and morphologies of the as-prepared composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The present design of Bi₂W_0.5Mo_0.5O₆ solid solution nanotubes leads to remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activities with a peak CO/CH₄ production rate of 6.55/3.75 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ under visible light irradiation at room temperature, which was about 7 times that on pure Bi₂WO₆ and Bi₂MoO₆ nanotubes, respectively. Hollow nanotubular structures and synergistic electronic effects of various elements contribute to the enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity of Bi₂W_0.5Mo_0.5O₆ solid solution nanotubes.

One-step fabrication of bimetallic PtNi mesoporous nanospheres as an efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

The controlled synthesis of Pt-based bimetallic porous nanostructures is highly important for the design of electrocatalysts with high performance. Herein, we report a one-step method for the direct synthesis of well-dispersed bimetallic PtNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtNi MNs) at high yield. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of composition (bimetallic PtNi) and structure (mesoporous and highly open structure), the as-obtained PtNi MNs exhibit superior catalytic activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Broadening the sunlight response region with carbon dot sensitized TiO2 as a support for a Pt catalyst in the methanol oxidation reaction
