Construction of hexabenzocoronene-based chiral nanographenes

The past decade witnessed remarkable success in synthetic molecular nanographenes. Encouraged by the widespread application of chiral nanomaterials, the design, and construction of chiral nanographenes is a hot topic recently. As a classic nanographene unit, hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene generally serves as the building block for nanographene synthesis. This review summarizes the representative examples of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene-based chiral nanographenes.

The Scholl Reaction as a Powerful Tool for Synthesis of Curved Polycyclic Aromatics

The past decade has witnessed remarkable success in the synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics through Scholl reactions which enable oxidative aryl-aryl coupling even in company with the introduction of significant steric strain. These curved polycyclic aromatics are not only unique objects of structural organic chemistry in relation to the nature of aromaticity but also play an important role in bottom-up approaches to precise synthesis of nanocarbons of unique topology. Moreover, they have received considerable attention in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and organic functional materials because of their interesting properties and promising applications. Despite the great success of Scholl reactions in synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics, the outcome of a newly designed substrate in the Scholl reaction still cannot be predicted in a generic and precise manner largely due to limited understanding on the reaction mechanism and possible rearrangement processes. This review provides an overview of Scholl reactions with a focus on their applications in synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics with interesting structures and properties and aims to shed light on the key factors that affect Scholl reactions in synthesizing sterically strained polycyclic aromatics.

Synthesis of Distorted Nitrogen-Doped Nanographenes by Partially Oxidative Cyclodehydrogenation Reaction

A series of partially fused N-doped nanographenes are synthesized via the oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of oligoaryl-substituted dibenzo[ e,l ]pyrene ( 1 ), including compounds ( 2 - 4 ) with five, six, and seven new C-C bonds are formed, respectively, implying stepwise C-C bond fusion and extended π-conjugation. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 4a revealed that the presence of sterically demanding groups hindered the formation of planar and fully fused nanographene in the oxidative cyclodehydrogenation reaction step. Optical study of compounds 2 to 4 showed that extended π-conjugation leads to a regular stepwise bathochromic shift in the absorption and emission spectra. Furthermore, the HOMO-LUMO gaps of these compounds exhibit a decrease as C-C bond formation proceeds. Thus, the optoelectronic properties of nanographenes are highly dependent on the formation of new C-C bonds in the molecular skeleton.

Recent Advances in Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. The article covers literature published during the period of 2016-2020, providing an update to our first review of this topic (Chem. Rev. 2017, 117 (4), 3479-3716).

Luminescent Graphene-Based Materials via Europium Complexation on Dipyridylpyridazine-Functionalized Graphene Sheets

Graphene-based materials exhibit outstanding physical properties and so are potentially applicable in a great variety of fields. Unlike their corresponding oxides, graphite and graphene are not prone to functionalization. Diels-Alder reactions are among the scarce reactions that they can occur without disrupting their conjugated sp² systems. Herein, the reaction between graphite and 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine under different conditions affords several graphene-based materials consisting of dipyridylpyridazine-functionalized few-layer graphene, multilayer graphene and graphite, the sheets of which act as ligands for the grafting of a europium complex. These three materials show strong red emission under 365 nm UV radiation. Their emitting particles can be visualized by confocal microscopy. The rich coordination chemistry of dipyridylpyridazine ligands has potential novel properties for similarly functionalized graphene-based materials grafted with other metal complexes.

Ruthenium(II)-Catalyzed Microwave-Promoted Multiple C-H Activation in Synthesis of Hexa(heteroaryl)benzenes in Water

A series of hexa(heteroaryl)benzenes were synthesized by the Ru(II)-carboxylate-catalyzed multiple C-H activation of benzenes carrying pyridyl, pyrimidyl, or pyrazolyl directing groups using N-heteroaryl bromides as coupling partners. The reactions proceeded with high selectivity under microwave irradiation in water. Iterative penta-arylation could be implemented via activation of C-H bonds of generated intermediates by cascade chelation assistance of in situ installed pyridyl groups. This strategy provides multidentate ligands for selective complexation of transition metals and potential building of photoredox systems.
