Complex Materials with Stochastic Structural Patterns: Spiky Colloids with Enhanced Charge Storage Capacity

Self-assembled materials with complex nanoscale and mesoscale architecture attract considerable attention in energy and sustainability technologies. Their high performance can be attributed to high surface area, quantum effects, and hierarchical organization. Delineation of these contributions is, however, difficult because complex materials display stochastic structural patterns combining both order and disorder, which is difficult to be consistently reproduced yet being important for materials' functionality. Their compositional variability make systematic studies even harder. Here, a model system of FeSe2 "hedgehog" particles (HPs) was selected  to gain insight into the mechanisms of charge storage n complex nanostructured materials common for batteries and supercapacitors. Specifically, HPs represent self-assembled biomimetic nanomaterials with a medium level of complexity; they display an organizational pattern of spiky colloids with considerable disorder yet non-random; this patternt is consistently reproduced from particle to particle. . It was found that HPs can accommodate ≈70× greater charge density than spheroidal nano- and microparticles. Besides expanded surface area, the enhanced charge storage capacity was enabled by improved hole transport and reversible atomic conformations of FeSe2 layers in the blade-like spikes associated with the rotatory motion of the Se atoms around Fe center. The dispersibility of HPs also enables their easy integration into energy storage devices. HPs quadruple stored electrochemical energy and double the storage modulus of structural supercapacitors.

Enhanced lithium storage performance of porous Si/C composite anodes using a recrystallized NaCl template

Silicon (Si) has recently aroused great interest as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries with high energy density due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the application of Si remains a great challenge owing to its extremely large volume change during cycling, thus resulting in dramatic capacity fading. Herein, a novel structure design of the porous Si/C composite with Si nanoparticles embedded in the carbon nanosheets has been successfully achieved by using a recrystallized NaCl template with appropriate particle size. The outermost sheet-like carbon coating can improve the electronic conductivity and contribute to the formation of a more stable solid-electrolyte interphase layer, while the inner void space effectively buffers the volume expansion of Si during the lithiation process. In addition, only a structure with Si particles anchored on the surface of carbon nanosheets has been obtained by using a commercial NaCl template with large particle size, confirming the effective regulation of the NaCl template in the microstructure and thus the electrochemical properties of the Si/C composites. As expected, benefiting from the combination of the outermost carbon coating and recrystallized NaCl-derived porous structure, the as-obtained Si/C composite demonstrates attractive cycling stability and rate performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Advances in the synthesis and design of nanostructured materials by aerosol spray processes for efficient energy storage

The increasing demand for energy storage has motivated the search for highly efficient electrode materials for use in rechargeable batteries with enhanced energy density and longer cycle life. One of the most promising strategies for achieving improved battery performance is altering the architecture of nanostructured materials employed as electrode materials in the energy storage field. Among numerous synthetic methods suggested for the fabrication of nanostructured materials, aerosol spray techniques such as spray pyrolysis, spray drying, and flame spray pyrolysis are reliable, as they are facile, cost-effective, and continuous processes that enable the synthesis of nanostructured electrode materials with desired morphologies and compositions with controlled stoichiometry. The post-treatment of spray-processed powders enables the fabrication of oxide, sulfide, and selenide nanostructures hybridized with carbonaceous materials including amorphous carbon, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, etc. In this article, recent progress in the synthesis of nanostructured electrode materials by spray processes and their general formation mechanisms are discussed in detail. A brief introduction to the working principles of each spray process is given first, and synthetic strategies for the design of electrode materials for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, lithium-sulfur, lithium-selenium, and lithium-oxygen batteries are discussed along with some examples. This analysis sheds light on the synthesis of nanostructured materials by spray processes and paves the way toward the design of other novel and advanced nanostructured materials for high performance electrodes in rechargeable batteries of the future.

In Situ Synthesis of Multilayer Carbon Matrix Decorated with Copper Particles: Enhancing the Performance of Si as Anode for Li-Ion Batteries

A 3D structured composite was designed to improve the conductivity and to ease the volume problems of Si anode during cycling for lithium-ions batteries. An in situ method via a controllable gelation process was explored to fabricate the 3D composite of a multilayer carbon matrix toughened by cross-linked carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and decorated with conductive Cu agents. Structurally, a bifunctional carbon shell was formed on the surface of Si to improve the conductivity but alleviate side reactions. Cu particles as conducting agents decorated in the carbon matrix are also used to further improve the conductivity. The volume issue of Si particles can be effectively released via toughening the carbon matrix through the multilayered structure and cross-linked CNTs. Moreover, the carbon matrix might prevent silicon particles from agglomeration. Consequently, the Si@C@Cu composite is expected to exhibit benign electrochemical performances with a commendable capacity of 1500 mAh g^-1 (900 cycles, 1 A g^-1) and a high rate performance (1035 mAh g^-1, 4 A g^-1). The D_Li⁺ ranging from 10^-11 to 10^-9 cm^-2 s^-1 of the Si@C@Cu anode is obtained via the GITT test, which is higher than most reported data.

Facile and Scalable Approach To Fabricate Granadilla-like Porous-Structured Silicon-Based Anode for Lithium Ion Batteries

A porous silicon and carbon composite (PSi/C) with granadilla-like structure as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries has been easily fabricated by spray drying and subsequent pyrolysis treatments. For the PSi/C, yolk-shell-structured Si/C nanobeads are equably distributed inside the porous carbon framework. The key point of this work is the combination of the advantages of both the yolk-shell structure and porous structure in one system. The void space inside the yolk-shell Si/C nanobeads and the interconnected three-dimensional porous carbon frameworks can effectively enhance the cyclic stability and conductivity of this composite. As expected, PSi/C with 15.4% silicon content exhibited a specific capacity as high as 1357.43 mAh g^-1 and retained 933.62 mAh g^-1 beyond 100 cycles at 100 mA g^-1. Moreover, it showed a reversible specific capacity as high as 610.38 mAh g^-1 at 1000 mA g^-1, even after 3000 cycles.

Spray-Drying of Electrode Materials for Lithium- and Sodium-Ion Batteries

The performance of electrode materials in lithium-ion (Li-ion), sodium-ion (Na-ion) and related batteries depends not only on their chemical composition but also on their microstructure. The choice of a synthesis method is therefore of paramount importance. Amongst the wide variety of synthesis or shaping routes reported for an ever-increasing panel of compositions, spray-drying stands out as a versatile tool offering demonstrated potential for up-scaling to industrial quantities. In this review, we provide an overview of the rapidly increasing literature including both spray-drying of solutions and spray-drying of suspensions. We focus, in particular, on the chemical aspects of the formulation of the solution/suspension to be spray-dried. We also consider the post-processing of the spray-dried precursors and the resulting morphologies of granules. The review references more than 300 publications in tables where entries are listed based on final compound composition, starting materials, sources of carbon etc.
