Coal Fly Ash Decorated with Graphene and Polyaniline Nanocomposites for Effective Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium and Its Reuse for Photocatalysis

Coal fly ash was functionalized and modified with graphene oxide and polyaniline (CFA/GO/PANI nanocomposite) through hydrothermal synthesis, which was used for remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time on the removal of Cr(VI). The ideal pH for this work was 2, and it was used for all other studies. The Cr(VI)-loaded spent adsorbent CFA/GO/PANI + Cr(VI) was reused as a photocatalyst for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The CFA/GO/PANI nanocomposite removed Cr(VI) ions rapidly. The adsorption process was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm model. The CFA/GO/PANI nanocomposite demonstrated a high adsorption capacity of 124.72 mg/g for Cr(VI) removal. In addition, the Cr(VI)-loaded spent adsorbent played a significant role in the photocatalytic degradation of BPA with 86% degradation. The reuse of the Cr(VI)-loaded spent adsorbent as a photocatalyst presents a new solution for the reduction of secondary waste from the adsorption process.

The Room Temperature Highly Sensitive Ammonia Gas Sensor Based on Polyaniline and Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dot-Coated Hollow Indium Oxide Nanofiber Composite

Hollow indium trioxide (In₂O₃) nanofibers fabricated via an effectively combined method of electrospinning and high-temperature calcination were coated with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) prepared by a hydrothermal process through electrostatic interaction. The N-GQD-coated hollow In₂O₃ nanofibers served as a core for the synthesis of polyaniline (PANI)/N-GQD/hollow In₂O₃ nanofiber ternary composites using in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The chemical structure and morphology of the fabricated ternary composites were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The gas-sensing performances of the ternary composites were estimated by a homemade dynamic test system which was supplied with a real-time resistance acquisition platform at room temperature. The response value of the PANI/N-GQD/hollow In₂O₃ nanofiber sensor with a loading of 20 wt% N-GQD-coated hollow In₂O₃ nanofiber and an exposure of 1 ppm NH₃ was 15.2, which was approximately more than 4.4 times higher than that of the PANI sensor. This ternary composite sensor was proved to be very sensitive in the detection of NH₃ at a range of concentration between 0.6 ppm and 2.0 ppm at room temperature, which is crucial in the detection of hepatic or kidney disease in human breath. The PANI/N-GQD/hollow In₂O₃ nanofiber sensor also revealed higher selectivity and repeatability when exposed to 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH₃ at room temperature. Because of the excellent selectivity and repeatability in the detection of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm NH₃ at room temperature achieved in this study, it is considered that the PANI/N-GQD/hollow In₂O₃ nanofiber composite sensor will be a favored gas-sensing material applied on human breath for the detection of hepatic or kidney disease.

Graphene oxide/polyaniline-based microwave split-ring resonator: A versatile platform towards ammonia sensing

Ammonia gas sensors have always received significant attention as robust platforms for emission control, food safety, and monitoring human exhaled breath for the early diagnosis of diseases such as dysfunction of the kidney and liver. This study explores the development of a microwave-based split-ring resonator (SRR) sensor with enhanced sensitivity to detect ammonia gas at low concentrations. The sensor is based on a nanocomposite fabricated by incorporating 10 wt% of graphene oxide (GO) into polyaniline (PANI) via the in-situ polymerization of aniline monomers over the surface of the GO sheets. The addition of GO to PANI results in a high sensitivity of 0.038 dB ppm^-1 for low concentrations (1-25 ppm) and 0.0045 dB ppm^-1 for high concentrations (> 25 ppm) of ammonia gas, in a 150-400 s time interval at room temperature. The prepared sensor can selectively sense ammonia gas in the presence of other higher concentrations of hazardous gases and a wide range of relative humidity levels (15-90%). The response signal is repeatable after 30 days with less than 0.32% deviation. The developed low-cost and robust sensor has the potential to monitor ammonia gas in various applications, including medical, environmental, food, and agricultural sectors.

Noninvasive Detection of Ammonia in the Breath of Hemodialysis Patients Using a Highly Sensitive Ammonia Sensor Based on a Polypyrrole/Sulfonated Graphene Nanocomposite

In this work, we fabricated fast-responsive and highly sensitive chemiresistive sensors based on nanocomposites of polypyrrole and graphitic materials such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and sulfonated graphene (SRGO) by an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the operating temperature of different nanocomposites were investigated at four temperatures (28, 40, 50, and 60 °C), and the results were compared with that of the polypyrrole-based sensor. The experimental results for sensors indicate that the proposed PPy/SRGO sensor could be an appropriate choice for NH₃ detection at 28 °C in the range of 0.50 parts per billion (ppb) to 12 parts per million (ppm). The PPy/SRGO nanocomposite gas sensor exhibited fast responsivity, good repeatability, and high chemical selectivity to low-concentration ammonia against humidity, methanol, ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, dibutylamine, dimethylamine, methylamine, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide at 28 °C. We utilized the PPy/SRGO sensor for studying the variation of the ammonia concentration in hemodialysis (HD) patients' breath before and after dialysis and correlated it with the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. The results of the PPy/SRGO sensor indicated that the breath ammonia concentration significantly decreased after dialysis in agreement with BUN. The results demonstrate the potential application of the PPy/SRGO sensor for noninvasive detection of ammonia in breath and make this type of sensor a promising tool for the diagnosis of renal and liver diseases.

In Situ Growth of Oriented Polyaniline Nanorod Arrays on the Graphite Flake for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Polyaniline with oriented nanorod arrays could provide high surface area and relaxed nanostructure to optimize ion diffusion paths, thus enhancing the performance of the device. In this paper, we designed an all-solid symmetrical supercapacitor with good performance based on polyaniline nanorod arrays in situ-grown on a graphite flake free-standing substrate. The specific capacitance, cycle stability, and energy density of the prepared supercapacitor device were 135 F/g, 75.4% retention after 1500 cycles, and the energy density is 18.75 W h/kg at a power density of 500 W/kg. The good performance of the supercapacitor device was obviously related to the oriented nanorod arrays of polyaniline/graphite flakes. In order to find the application of the prepared supercapacitor device, the tandem device consisting of three single supercapacitor devices connected in series had been used to drive small electronic equipment. The red light-emitting diode and chronograph could be easily driven by the 3-series supercapacitor devices. These results indicated that the prepared supercapacitor device based on the polyaniline/graphite flake electrode had potential applications in energy storage devices.

High-performance chemiresistor-type NH3 gas sensor based on three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline hybrid

In this study, a novel gas sensor is proposed based on a three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline (3D RGO/PANI) hybrid, which is synthesized by a hydrothermal method for detecting NH₃ gas at room temperature. The 3D RGO/PANI hybrid is characterized by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared and x-ray diffraction. The specific surface area is analyzed using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation. The as-synthesized sensing materials with an appropriate amount of polyaniline nanowires (PANI-NWs) can effectively prevent aggregation of the neighboring graphene sheets and directly act as adsorption sites for NH₃ molecules. In comparison with its pure 3D RGO counterpart, the 3D RGO/PANI (1:1) hybrid exhibits 44.7 times enhanced response to 100 ppm NH₃, suggesting the remarkable effect of PANI-NWs in improving the sensitivity. This work gives new insights into boosting the sensitivity and selectivity of detecting NH₃ gas by incorporating PANI-NWs into 3D RGO.

Electronic Nose Based on Carbon Nanocomposite Sensors for Clove Essential Oil Detection

This work describes the development of an electronic nose (e-nose) based on carbon nanocomposites to detect clove essential oil (CEO), eugenol (EUG), and eugenyl acetate (EUG.ACET). Our e-nose system comprises an array of six sensing units modified with nanocomposites of poly(aniline), graphene oxide, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes doped with different acids, dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid, camphorsulfonic acid, and hydrochloric acid. The e-nose presented an excellent analytical performance to the detected analytes (CEO, EUG, and EUG.ACET) with high sensitivity and reversibility. The limit of detection was lower than 1.045 ppb, with response time (<13.26 s) and recovery time (<106.29 s) and low hysteresis. Information visualization methods (PCA and IDMAP) demonstrated that the e-nose was efficient to discriminate the different concentrations of analyte volatile oil compounds. PM-IRRAS measurements suggest that the doping mechanism of molecular architectures is composed of a change in the oscillation energy of the characteristic dipoles and changes in the molecular orientation dipoles C═C and C═O at 1615 and 1740 cm^-1, respectively. The experimental results indicate that our e-nose system is promising for a rapid analysis method to monitor the quality of essential oils.

Assembly with copper(ii) ions and D–π–A molecules on a graphene surface for ultra-fast acetic acid sensing at room temperature

The as-prepared 4HQ-rGO/Cu²⁺ sensor possessed a high response, outstanding selectivity and fast response-recovery characteristic, which was mainly attributed to the supramolecularly assemble of 4-hydroxyquinoline, and Cu²⁺ with graphene nanosheets.

The effects of amino substituents on the enhanced ammonia sensing performance of PcCo/rGO hybrids

Three reversible ammonia (NH3) gas sensors were fabricated using tetra-α-(p-aminobenzyloxy)phthalocyanine cobalt (ABOPcCo), tetra-α-aminophthalocyanine cobalt (APcCo) and substituent-free phthalocyanine cobalt (FPcCo) functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO), with cost-efficient, highly sensitive and stable sensing performance. These hybrid materials were prepared via a facile physical solution mixing self-assembly reaction with rGO and PcCo solutions. The obtained PcCo/rGO hybrid sensors exhibit excellent sensing performance; especially the ABOPcCo/rGO sensor, whose response is about 23.3% (50 ppm), with a limit of detection as low as 78 ppb, and response and recovery times about as fast as 225 s and 250 s. The performance of the PcCo/rGO hybrid sensors can be optimized by adjusting the concentrations of the PcCo/rGO aqueous dispersions. More importantly, the NH3-sensing performance of the PcCo/rGO sensors was tuned by adjusting the substituent structure of PcCo. The enhanced NH3-sensing performance may be attributed to synergistic effects between PcCo and rGO, e.g., stronger adsorption interactions between PcCo with an aminophenoxy substituent and NH3, the high electrical conductivity of rGO, and fast charge transfer between PcCo and rGO. These are further confirmed via first-principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) measurements.

Optochemical properties of gas-phase protonated tetraphenylporphyrin investigated using an optical waveguide NH3 sensor

5,10,15,20-Tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) was synthesized, and a glass optical waveguide (OWG, which restricts and maintains the light energy in a specific, narrow space and propagates along the space axially) was coated with a gas-phase protonated TPP thin film to develop a sensor for NH3 gas detection. The results show that the TPP thin film agglomerated into H-based J-type aggregates after H2S gas exposure. The molecules in the protonated TPP film OWG sensor acted as NH3 receptors because the gas-phase protonated TPP film morphologically changed from J-type aggregates into free-base monomers when it was deprotonated by NH3 exposure. In this case, H2S gas could be used to increase the relative amount of J-type aggregates in the TPP film and restore the sensor response. The reversible surface morphology of the TPP film was analyzed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy.
