Bismuth-Based Perovskite Derivates with Thermal Voltage Exceeding 40 mV/K

Heat is an inexhaustible source of energy, and it can be exploited by thermoelectronics to produce electrical power or electrical responses. The search for a low-cost thermoelectric material that could achieve high efficiencies and can also be straightforwardly scalable has turned significant attention to the halide perovskite family. Here, we report the thermal voltage response of bismuth-based perovskite derivates and suggest a path to increase the electrical conductivity by applying chalcogenide doping. The films were produced by drop-casting or spin coating, and sulfur was introduced in the precursor solution using bismuth triethylxanthate. The physical-chemical analysis confirms the substitution. The sulfur introduction caused resistivity reduction by 2 orders of magnitude, and the thermal voltage exceeded 40 mV K-1 near 300 K in doped and undoped bismuth-based perovskite derivates. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering were employed to confirm the structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to study the composition and morphology of the produced thin films. UV-visible absorbance, photoluminescence, inverse photoemission, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies have been used to investigate the energy band gap.

One-Year Water-Stable and Porous Bi(III) Halide Semiconductor with Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Performance

Hybrid metal halide semiconductors are a unique family of materials with immense potential for numerous applications. For this to materialize, environmental stability and toxicity deficiencies must be simultaneously addressed. We report here a porous, visible light semiconductor, namely, (DHS)Bi2I8 (DHS = [2.2.2] cryptand), which consists of nontoxic, earth-abundant elements, and is water-stable for more than a year. Gas- and vapor-sorption studies revealed that it can selectively and reversibly adsorb H2O and D2O at room temperature (RT) while remaining impervious to N2 and CO2. Solid-state NMR measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the incorporation of H2O and D2O in the molecular cages, validating the porous nature. In addition to porosity, the material exhibits broad band-edge light emission centered at 600 nm with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 99 nm, which is maintained after 6 months of immersion in H2O. Moreover, (DHS)Bi2I8 exhibits bacteriocidal action against three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains. This performance, coupled with the recorded water stability and porous nature, renders it suitable for a plethora of applications, from solid-state batteries to water purification and disinfection.

Ligand Engineering in Tin-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted aggressive attention in the photovoltaic field in light of the rapid increasing power conversion efficiency. However, their large-scale application and commercialization are limited by the toxicity issue of lead (Pb). Among all the lead-free perovskites, tin (Sn)-based perovskites have shown potential due to their low toxicity, ideal bandgap structure, high carrier mobility, and long hot carrier lifetime. Great progress of Sn-based PSCs has been realized in recent years, and the certified efficiency has now reached over 14%. Nevertheless, this record still falls far behind the theoretical calculations. This is likely due to the uncontrolled nucleation states and pronounced Sn (IV) vacancies. With insights into the methodologies resolving both issues, ligand engineering-assisted perovskite film fabrication dictates the state-of-the-art Sn-based PSCs. Herein, we summarize the role of ligand engineering during each state of film fabrication, ranging from the starting precursors to the ending fabricated bulks. The incorporation of ligands to suppress Sn2+ oxidation, passivate bulk defects, optimize crystal orientation, and improve stability is discussed, respectively. Finally, the remained challenges and perspectives toward advancing the performance of Sn-based PSCs are presented. We expect this review can draw a clear roadmap to facilitate Sn-based PSCs via ligand engineering.

Antisolvent Engineering to Enhance Photovoltaic Performance of Methylammonium Bismuth Iodide Solar Cells

High absorption ability and direct bandgap makes lead-based perovskite to acquire high photovoltaic performance. However, lead content in perovskite becomes a double-blade for counterbalancing photovoltaic performance and sustainability. Herein, we develop a methylammonium bismuth iodide (MBI), a perovskite-derivative, to serve as a lead-free light absorber layer. Owing to the short carrier diffusion length of MBI, its film quality is a predominant factor to photovoltaic performance. Several candidates of non-polar solvent are discussed in aspect of their dipole moment and boiling point to reveal the effects of anti-solvent assisted crystallization. Through anti-solvent engineering of toluene, the morphology, crystallinity, and element distribution of MBI films are improved compared with those without toluene treatment. The improved morphology and crystallinity of MBI films promote photovoltaic performance over 3.2 times compared with the one without toluene treatment. The photovoltaic device can achieve 0.26% with minor hysteresis effect, whose hysteresis index reduces from 0.374 to 0.169. This study guides a feasible path for developing MBI photovoltaics.

Potassium Iodide-Modified Lead-Free Cs3Bi2I9 Perovskites for Enhanced High-Efficiency Solar Cells

Lead-free, bismuth-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are promising, non-toxic, and stable alternatives to lead-based PSCs, which are environmentally harmful and highly unstable under deprived air conditions. However, bismuth-based PSCs still suffer from low-power-conversion efficiency (PCE) due to their large bandgap and poor film morphology. Their poor film-forming ability is the greatest obstacle to Cs₃Bi₂I₉ progress in thin-film solar cell technology. This study synthesizes novel, lead-free perovskites with a small bandgap, excellent stability, and highly improved photovoltaic performance by integrating different amounts of potassium iodide (KI) into a perovskite precursor solution. KI incorporation improves the crystallinity of the perovskite, increases the grain size, and decreases the potential contact distribution, which is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, electronic scanning microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The Cs₃Bi₂I₉ PSC device with 2 vol. % incorporation of KI shows the highest PCE of 2.81% and Voc of 1.01 V as far as all the Bi-based cells fabricated for this study are concerned. The study demonstrates that incorporating KI in the Cs₃Bi₂I₉ perovskite layer highly stabilizes the resultant PSC device against humidity to the extent that it maintains 98% of the initial PCE after 90 days, which is suitable for solar cell applications. The devices also demonstrate greater resistance to airborne contaminants and high temperatures without encapsulation, opening up new possibilities for lead-free Cs₃Bi₂I₉ PSCs in future commercialization.

Recent Advancements in Nontoxic Halide Perovskites: Beyond Divalent Composition Space

Since the inception of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites of ABX3 stoichiometry in 2009, there has been enormous progress in envisaging efficient solar cell materials throughout the world, from both the theoretical and experimental perspectives. Despite achieving 25.5% efficiency, hybrid halide perovskites are still facing two main challenges: toxicity due to the presence of lead and device stability. Two particular families with A3B2X9 and A2MM'X6 stoichiometries have emerged to address these two prime concerns, which have restrained the advancement of solar energy harvesting. Several investigations, both experimental and theoretical, are being conducted to explore the holy-grail materials, which could be optimum for not only efficient but also stable and nontoxic photovoltaics technology. However, the trade-off among stability, efficiency, and toxicity in such solar energy materials is yet to be completely resolved, which requires a systematic overview of A3B2X9- and A2MM'X6-based solar cell materials. Therefore, in this timely and relevant perspective, we have focused on these two particular promising families of perovskite materials. We have portrayed a roadmap projecting the recent advancements from both theoretical and experimental perspectives for these two exciting and promising solar energy material families while amalgamating our critical viewpoint with a future outlook.

Low-Toxicity Perovskite Applications in Carbon Electrode Perovskite Solar Cells—A Review

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with earth-abundant carbon as an effective replacer for unstable hole-transporting materials and expensive electrodes is a recently proposed structure promising better air and moisture stability. In this review paper, we report on the latest advances and state of the art of Pb-free and low-Pb-content perovskites, used as absorbers in carbon-based perovskite solar cells. The focus is on the implementation of these, environmentally friendly and non-toxic, structures in PSCs with a carbon electrode as a replacement of the noble metal electrode typically used (C-PSCs). The motivation for this study has been the great potential that C-PSCs have shown for the leap towards the commercialization of PSCs. Some of their outstanding properties include low cost, high-stability, ambient processability and compatibility with most up-scaling methods (e.g., printing). By surpassing the key obstacle of toxicity, caused by the Pb content of the highest-performing perovskites, and by combining the advantages of C-PSCs with the Pb-free perovskites low toxicity, this technology will move one step further; this review summarizes the most promising routes that have been reported so far towards that direction.

Broad-band luminescence involving fluconazole antifungal drug in a lead-free bismuth iodide perovskite: Combined experimental and computational insights

The synthesis and characterization of a lead-free perovskite-type material, (C₁₃H₁₄N₆F₂O)₂ Bi₂I₁₀ is reported. It exhibits a zero-dimensional (0D) Bi₂I₁₀^4- octahedral unit, surrounded by a flexible tripodal antifungal ligand (H₂Fluconazole)²⁺. The several intermolecular interactions of the independent cation and the bismuth iodide octahedra were tested via the Hirshfeld surface analysis. The detailed interpretation of the vibrational modes was carried out. The band gap (Eg) of 2.10 eV agrees with the theoretical values. Upon photoexcitation, the crystals exhibit a broadband green emission peaked at 534 nm, which originates from electronic transitions within the inorganic cluster [Bi₂I₁₀]^4-. The theoretical calculations were carried out using DFT and TD-DFT methods to appraise the molecular geometry, vibrational spectra, electronic absorption spectra, frontier molecular orbitals (FOMs) and global reactivity descriptors. Calculations reveal that the energy gap (Eg) and other chemical reactivity descriptors are primarily linked to the inorganic anion and the triazolium rings (A and B) of the organic cation reflecting their importance in the activity and the antioxidant ability of the molecule.

A Potential Checkmate to Lead: Bismuth in Organometal Halide Perovskites, Structure, Properties, and Applications

The remarkable optoelectronic properties and considerable performance of the organo lead-halide perovskites (PVKs) in various optoelectronic applications grasp tremendous scientific attention. However, the existence of the toxic lead in these compounds is threatening human health and remains a major concern in the way of their commercialization. To address this issue, numerous nontoxic alternatives have been reported. Among these alternatives, bismuth-based PVKs have emerged as a promising substitute because of similar optoelectronic properties and extended environmental stability. This work communicates briefly about the possible lead-alternatives and explores bismuth-based perovskites comprehensively, in terms of their structures, optoelectronic properties, and applications. A brief description of lead-toxification is provided and the possible Pb-alternatives from the periodic table are scrutinized. Then, the classification and crystal structures of various Bi-based perovskites are elaborated on. Detailed optoelectronic properties of Bi-based perovskites are also described and their optoelectronic applications are abridged. The overall photovoltaic applications along with device characteristics (i.e., V OC, J SC, fill factor, FF, and power conversion efficiency, PCE), fabrication method, device architecture, and operational stability are also summarized. Finally, a conclusion is drawn where a brief outlook highlights the challenges that hamper the future progress of Bi-based optoelectronic devices and suggestions for future directions are provided.

From Lead Halide Perovskites to Lead-Free Metal Halide Perovskites and Perovskite Derivatives

Despite the exciting progress on power conversion efficiencies, the commercialization of the emerging lead (Pb) halide perovskite solar cell technology still faces significant challenges, one of which is the inclusion of toxic Pb. Searching for Pb-free perovskite solar cell absorbers is currently an attractive research direction. The approaches used for and the consequences of Pb replacement are reviewed herein. Reviews on the theoretical understanding of the electronic, optical, and defect properties of Pb and Pb-free halide perovskites and perovskite derivatives are provided, as well as the experimental results available in the literature. The theoretical understanding explains well why Pb halide perovskites exhibit superior photovoltaic properties, but Pb-free perovskites and perovskite derivatives do not.

Lead-Free Perovskites: Metals Substitution towards Environmentally Benign Solar Cell Fabrication

Perovskite solar cells have attracted significant attention during the current decade owing to their efficacy and photovoltaics performance, which has reached a new milestone in the thin-film category. Perovskite solar cells have witnessed a remarkable 25.2 % light-to-electricity conversion efficiency; however, the toxicity of the commonly employed Pb counterpart towards humans as well as the environment, in addition to material instability, are current bottlenecks towards commercial application. The scientific community has explored other metal ions as substitutions for Pb, while preserving the unique properties of the material, to produce environment-friendly perovskites. In this Review, we highlight the recent developments and challenges of Pb-free halide perovskite-based light harvesters for solar cell applications. This summary is intended to aid in the further development of a materials library for this sustainable technology.

A Zero-Dimensional Mixed-Anion Hybrid Halogenobismuthate(III) Semiconductor: Structural, Optical, and Photovoltaic Properties

In this contribution, we present the synthesis and characterization of the mixed-anion halogenobismuthate(III) (CH₃NH₃)₆BiI_5.22Cl_3.78 (MBIC) as an alternative lead-free perovskite-type semiconductor, and discuss its optical, electronic, and photovoltaic properties in comparison to the methylammonium bismuth iodide (CH₃NH₃)₃Bi₂I₉ (MBI) compound. The exchange of iodide with chloride during synthesis leads to the formation of an orthorhombic A₆BX₉-type crystal structure ( Cmma, No. 67) with isolated BiX₆ octahedra and methylammonium chloride interlayers. The experimentally found optical indirect band gap of 2.25 eV is in good agreement with the calculated value of 2.50 eV derived from DFT simulations. The valence band maximum and the conduction band minimum were determined to be at -6.2 eV and -4.0 eV vs vacuum. Similar to MBI, thin films of MBIC are composed of microcrystalline platelets. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements show electron transfer of MBIC to mesoporous TiO₂. The photovoltaic behavior of both compounds is compared in solar cells with the following device architecture: glass/ITO/compact TiO₂/mesoporous TiO₂/MBIC or MBI/spiro-OMeTAD/Au. Despite the zero-dimensional structure of MBIC, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 0.18% and a high fill factor of almost 60% were obtained with this material as absorber layer. When stored under inert conditions, these solar cells show an excellent long-term stability over the investigated period of more than 700 days.

Lead-free hybrid perovskites for photovoltaics

This review covers the state-of-the-art in organo-inorganic lead-free hybrid perovskites (HPs) and applications of these exciting materials as light harvesters in photovoltaic systems. Special emphasis is placed on the influence of the spatial organization of HP materials both on the micro- and nanometer scale on the performance and stability of perovskite-based solar light converters. This review also discusses HP materials produced by isovalent lead(II) substitution with Sn2+ and other metal(II) ions, perovskite materials formed on the basis of M3+ cations (Sb3+, Bi3+) as well as on combinations of M+/M3+ ions aliovalent to 2Pb2+ (Ag+/Bi3+, Ag+/Sb3+, etc.). The survey is concluded with an outlook highlighting the most promising strategies for future progress of photovoltaic systems based on lead-free perovskite compounds.

Lead-free, air-stable hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite resistive switching memory with ultrafast switching and multilevel data storage

Organolead halide perovskites exhibit excellent optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties such as a wide range of light absorption and tunable band gaps. However, the presence of toxic elements and chemical instability under an ambient atmosphere hindered lead halide perovskites from real device applications because of environmental issues and stability. Here, we demonstrate a resistive switching memory device based on a lead-free bismuth halide perovskite (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9 (MABI). The active layer of the device can be easily prepared by solvent engineering. The nonvolatile memory based on MABI layers has reliable retention properties (∼104 s), endurance (300 cycles), and switching speed (100 ns), as well as environmental stability. Moreover, the control of the compliance current leads to multilevel data storage with four resistance states, which can be applied to high-density memory devices. These results suggest that MABI has potential applications in information storage.

High-Quality (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9 Film-Based Solar Cells: Pushing Efficiency up to 1.64

Bismuth-based solar cells have exhibited some advantages over lead perovskite solar cells for nontoxicity and superior stability, which are currently two main concerns in the photovoltaic community. As for the perovskite-related compound (CH₃NH₃)₃Bi₂I₉ applied for solar cells, the conversion efficiency is severely restricted by the unsatisfactory photoactive film quality. Herein we report a novel two-step approach- high-vacuum BiI₃ deposition and low-vacuum homogeneous transformation of BiI₃ to (CH₃NH₃)₃Bi₂I₉-for highly compact, pinhole-free, large-grained films, which are characterized with absorption coefficient, trap density of states, and charge diffusion length comparable to those of some lead perovskite analogues. Accordingly, the solar cells have realized a record power conversion of efficiency of 1.64% and also a high external quantum efficiency approaching 60%. Our work demonstrates the potential of (CH₃NH₃)₃Bi₂I₉ for highly efficient and long-term stable solar cells.
