Single Atom-Dispersed Silver Incorporated in ZIF-8-Derived Porous Carbon for Enhanced Photothermal Activity and Antibacterial Activities

Purpose

Recently, Single-atom-loaded carbon-based material is a new environmentally friendly and stable photothermal antibacterial nanomaterial. It is still a great challenge to achieve single-atom loading on carbon materials.

Materials and Methods

Herein, We doped single-atom Ag into ZIF-8-derived porous carbon to obtain Ag-doped ZIF-8-derived porous carbon(AgSA-ZDPC). The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, FESEM, EDX, TEM, and HAADF-STEM which confirmed that the single-atom Ag successfully doped into the porous carbon. Further, the photothermal properties and antimicrobial activity of AgSA-ZDPC have been tested.

Results

The results showed that the temperature increased by 30 °C after near-infrared light irradiation(1 W/cm2) for 5 min which was better than ZIF-8-derived porous carbon(ZDPC). It also exhibits excellent photothermal stability after the laser was switched on and off 5 times. When the AgSA-ZDPC concentration was greater than 50 µg/mL and the near-infrared irradiation was performed for 5 min, the growth inhibition of S. aureus and E. coli was almost 100%.

Conclusion

This work provides a simple method for the preparation of single-atom Ag-doped microporous carbon which has potential antibacterial application.

Recent advances in application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbent and catalyst in removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the aquatic environment is causing widespread concern due to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and possible environmental risk. These contaminants are produced daily in large quantities and released into water bodies. Traditional wastewater treatment plants are ineffective at degrading these pollutants. As a result, the development of long-term and effective POP removal techniques is critical. In water, adsorption removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs have been identified as energy and cost-efficient solutions. Both technologies have received a lot of attention for their efforts to treat the world's wastewater. Photocatalytic removal of POPs is a promising, effective, and long-lasting method, while adsorption removal of persistent POPs represents a simple, practical method, particularly in decentralized systems and isolated areas. It is critical to develop new adsorbents/photocatalysts with the desired structure, tunable chemistry, and maximum adsorption sites for highly efficient removal of POPs. As a class of recently created multifunctional porous materials, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer tremendous prospects in adsorptive removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs for water remediation. This review defines POPs and discusses current research on adsorptive and photocatalytic POP removal using emerging MOFs for each type of POPs.

Super-Dispersed Fe-N Sites Embedded into Porous Graphitic Carbon for ORR: Size, Composition and Activity Control

Searching for high-efficient, good long-term stability, and low-cost electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly desirable for the development of sustainable energy conversion devices. Iron-nitrogen doped carbon (Fe-N/C) catalysts have been recognized as the most promising candidates for traditional Pt-based catalysts that benefit from their high activity, excellent anti-poisoning ability, and inexpensiveness. Here, a super-dispersed and high-performance Fe-N/C catalyst was derived from chemically Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) by directly bonding Fe ions to imidazolate ligands within 3D frameworks. It produced a series of catalysts, whose sizes could be tuned in the range from 62 to over 473 nm in diameter. After rationally regulating the component and heating treatment, the best ORR activity was measured for the catalyst with a size of 105 nm, which was obtained when the Fe3+/Zn2+ molar ratio was 0.05 and carbonization temperature was 900 °C. It exhibited a high onset potential (Eonset = 0.99 V) and half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.885 V) compared with a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst (Eonset = 0.10 V, E1/2 = 0.861 V) as well as much better durability and methanol resistance in an alkaline electrolyte.

pH and light-responsive polycaprolactone/curcumin@zif-8 composite films with enhanced antibacterial activity

Food packaging materials, especially biodegradable polymer composites incorporated with natural antimicrobial agents with excellent antibacterial activities, are in high demand and attracted immense attention. Herein, a polycaprolactone/curcumin@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (PCL/Cur@ZIF-8) composite film with enhanced antibacterial activity was developed. Curcumin, a natural photosensitizer, was loaded in the highly porous nanocrystals ZIF-8 to improve its poor water solubility and stability. The integral structure of Cur@ZIF-8 was maintained well in the PCL matrix even at the highest loading of 35% (w/w), and all composite films had good light transmittance at 420-430 nm. The PCL/Cur@ZIF-8 composite films responded to the acidic growth environment of bacteria by releasing zinc ions and curcumin molecules. Furthermore, upon blue light irradiation (420-430 nm, 2.2 mW/cm² ), curcumin molecules generated singlet oxygen. With the synergistic effects of zinc ions and singlet oxygen, the composite films exhibited a 99.9% reduction of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains when the amount of Cur@ZIF-8 loading was more than 15% (w/w), as well as a strong anti-adhesion effect on bacteria. Moreover, bacterial resuscitation tests indicated that the composite films exhibited 99.9% reduction in the adhered bacteria population through treatment with photodynamic sterilization. This is the first study presenting that the incorporated curcumin ZIF-8 nanoparticles in the matrix of polymer are pH and light responsive for anti-adhesion of bacteria, which is of great potential application as antibacterial packaging material for the food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A novel, biodegradable, pH, and light-responsive composite film was developed for antibacterial activity. Natural photosensitizer curcumin was encapsulated in ZIF-8 nanocrystals (Cur@ZIF-8) as the antimicrobial agent. With the synergistic effects of Zn²⁺ and singlet oxygen, the composite film exhibited a 99.9% reduction of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains, and a strong anti-adhesion property toward bacteria. This composite film is of great potential application as an antibacterial packaging material that enhances the shelf life of fruits, meat, and so on.

Recent advances on preparation and environmental applications of MOF-derived carbons in catalysis

Carbon materials derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have excellent properties of high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, high conductivity and stability, and their applications in catalysis have become a rapidly expanding research field. In this review, we have summarized the synthesis strategies of MOF-derived carbons with different physical and chemical properties, obtained through direct carbonization, co-pyrolysis and post-treatment. The potential applications of derived carbons, especially monometal-, bimetal-, nonmetal-doped and metal-free carbons in organo-catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis are analyzed in detail from the environmental perspective. In addition, the improvement of catalytic efficiency is also considered from the aspects of increasing active sites, enhancing the activity of reactants and promoting free electron transfer. The function and synergy of various species of the composites in the catalytic reaction are summarized. The reaction paths and mechanisms are analyzed, and research ideas or trends are proposed for further development.

ZIF-8 nano confined protein-titanocene complex core-shell MOFs for efficient therapy of Neuroblastoma: Optimization, molecular dynamics and toxicity studies

In the present study, we have developed the core-shell metal organic framework (MOF) of zinc, wherein titanocene dichloride (TC) loaded lactoferrin (Lf) functioned as a core. The complexation of TC to Lf was studies using molecular dynamics study, Quantum mechanical model and spectroscopic investigations. Plackett-Burman design was used to screen and select the critical factors affecting the responses (size, zeta potential and PDI) while the effect of those parameter on the quality attributes (size and yield) was studied by means of a Box-Behnken design. The optimised Lf-TC nanoparticles were loaded inside the ZIF-8 framework along with an anticancer agent 5 Fluorouracil and characterized using techniques like FTIR, PXRD, Raman spectroscopy, EDX and UV-NIR spectroscopy and morphological techniques like SEM, TEM, AFM. The compatibility of the loaded ZIF-8 framework was examined by haemocompatibility studies. The potential of developed nanoplatform against Neuroblastoma was assessed using a cell line studies along with in vivo toxicity studies to ascertain its safety for after in-vivo administration in Wistar rats. Therefore, we can conclude that by employing the approach of DOE we were able to optimize the size and yield of Lf-TC NPs and further by loading inside ZIF-8 framework along with an anticancer drug like 5 fluorouracil we were able to develop a potential nanoplatform for the multimodal therapy of Neuroblastoma.

Metal oxide integrated metal organic frameworks (MO@MOF): rational design, fabrication strategy, characterization and emerging photocatalytic applications

This review focuses on the possible synthesis route, characterization techniques, and mechanistic pathways involved in the photocatalytic applications of MO@MOFs.

ZnO@ZIF-8 core–shell heterostructures with improved photocatalytic activity

ZnO@ZIF-8 heterostructures with ZnO as the core and ZIF-8 as the shell were successfully fabricated and completely degraded methylene blue in ∼4.5 min under solar light irradiation.

Exfoliated Molybdenum Disulfide Encapsulated in a Metal Organic Framework for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

An exfoliated MoS2 encapsulated into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was fabricated as a promising noble-metal-free photocatalyst for hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. The as-synthesized samples were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface analysis. It is well known that bulk MoS2 is unsuitable for photocatalysis due to its inadequate reduction and oxidation capabilities. However, exfoliated MoS2 exhibits a direct band gap of 2.8 eV due to quantum confinement, which enables it to possess suitable band positions and retain a good visible-light absorption ability. As a result, it is considered to be an encouraging candidate for photocatalytic applications. Encapsulating exfoliated MoS2 into MOF demonstrates an improved visible light absorption ability compared to pure MOF, and the highest hydrogen production rate that the encapsulated exfoliated MoS2 could reach was 68.4 μmol h-1g-1, which was much higher than that of pure MOF. With a suitable band structure and improved light-harvesting ability, exfoliated MoS2@MOF could be a potential photocatalyst for hydrogen production.

Recent Progress on Engineering Highly Efficient Porous Semiconductor Photocatalysts Derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks

Porous structures offer highly accessible surfaces and rich pores, which facilitate the exposure of numerous active sites for photocatalytic reactions, leading to excellent performances. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered ideal precursors for well-designed semiconductors with porous structures and/or heterostructures, which have shown enhanced photocatalytic activities. In this review, we summarize the recent development of porous structures, such as metal oxides and metal sulfides, and their heterostructures, derived from MOF-based materials as catalysts for various light-driven energy-/environment-related reactions, including water splitting, CO₂ reduction, organic redox reaction, and pollution degradation. A summary and outlook section is also included.
