Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Abstract
Contradictions have been reported on the effect of organic solvents, especially toluene, on enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (eROP) of L-lactide. Studies have shown that log P, a common measure of hydrophilicity, affects enzyme activity. This study examines the effect of solvents with various log P values on the eROP of L-lactide, performed using Candida rugosa lipase (CRL). N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA), 1,2-dimethoxybenzene, 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, diphenyl ether, and dodecane were used as the organic solvents. The eROP in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]) was also conducted to compare its performance with the organic solvents. The results show that [BMIM][PF6]-mediated eROP gave better conversion and molecular weight than the organic solvent-mediated eROP. In this study, the effects of solvents hydrophilicity are discussed, including the possibility of hexafluorophosphate ion ([PF6]−) hydrolysis to occur.

Abstract
Environmental problems, such as global warming and plastic pollution have forced researchers to investigate alternatives for conventional plastics. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), one of the well-known eco-friendly biodegradables and biobased polyesters, has been studied extensively and is considered to be a promising substitute to petroleum-based polymers. This review gives an inclusive overview of the current research of lactic acid and lactide dimer techniques along with the production of PLA from its monomers. Melt polycondensation as well as ring opening polymerization techniques are discussed, and the effect of various catalysts and polymerization conditions is thoroughly presented. Reaction mechanisms are also reviewed. However, due to the competitive decomposition reactions, in the most cases low or medium molecular weight (MW) of PLA, not exceeding 20,000-50,000 g/mol, are prepared. For this reason, additional procedures such as solid state polycondensation (SSP) and chain extension (CE) reaching MW ranging from 80,000 up to 250,000 g/mol are extensively investigated here. Lastly, numerous practical applications of PLA in various fields of industry, technical challenges and limitations of PLA use as well as its future perspectives are also reported in this review.

Abstract
Nowadays micro-plastic pollution has become one of the most serious global environmental problems. A potential strategy in managing micro-plastic waste is enzyme-catalyzed degradation. MGS0156 is a hydrolase screened from environmental metagenomes, which can efficiently degrade commercial plastics such as polycaprolactone, polylactide, etc. Here a combined molecular dynamics, molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area, and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanism method was used to reveal the enzymatic depolymerization mechanism. By systematically analyzing the binding processes of nine oligomers (from a monomer to tetramer), we found that longer oligomers have relatively stronger binding energy. The degradation process involves two concerted elementary steps: triad-assisted nucleophilic attack and C-O bond cleavage. C-O bond cleavage is the rate determining step with an average barrier of 15.7 kcal mol-1, which is consistent with the experimentally determined kcat (1101 s-1, corresponds to 13.3 kcal mol-1). The electrostatic influence analysis of twenty amino acids highlights His231 and Asp237 as potential mutation targets for designing more efficient MGS0156 mutants.

Abstract
This study assesses the use of immobilized lipase catalyst N435 during reactive extrusion (REX) versus magnetically stirred bulk and solution reaction conditions for the copolymerization of ε-caprolactone with ω-pentadecalactone (CL/PDL 1:1 molar). N435-catalyzed REX for reaction times from 1 to 3 h results in total %-monomer conversion, Mn , and Đ values increase from 92.7% to 98.8%, 36.1 to 51.3 kDa, and 1.85 to 1.96, respectively. Diad fraction analysis by quantitative 13 C NMR reveals that, after just 1 h, rapid N435-catalyzed transesterification reactions occur that give random copolyesters. In contrast, for bulk polymerization with magnetic stirring in round bottom flasks, reaction times from 1 to 3 h result in the following: Mn increases from 12.4 to 25.6 kDa, Đ decreases from 2.98 to 1.87, and the randomness index increases from 0.74 and 0.86 as PDL*-PDL diads are dominant. These results highlight that REX avoids problems associated with internal batch mixing that are encountered in bulk polymerizations. In sharp contrast to a previous study of 1:1 molar PDL/δ-valerolactone (VL) copolymerizations by N435-catalyzed REX, VL %-conversion increases to just 40.1% in 1 h whereas CL reaches 94.7%.

Abstract
Among the various catalysts that can be used for polycondensation reactions, enzymes have been gaining interest for three decades, offering a green and eco-friendly platform towards the sustainable design of renewable polyesters. However, limitations imposed by their delicate nature, render them less addressed. As a case study, we compare herein bulk and solution polycondensation of 1,6-hexanediol and diethyl adipate catalyzed by an immobilized lipase from Candida antarctica. The influence of various parameters including time, temperature, enzyme loading, and vacuum was assessed in the frame of a two-step polymerization with the help of response surface methodology, a statistical technique that investigates relations between input and output variables. Results in solution (diphenyl ether) and bulk conditions showed that a two-hour reaction time was enough to allow adequate oligomer growth for the first step conducted under atmospheric pressure at 100 °C. The number-average molecular weight (Mn) achieved varied between 5000 and 12,000 g·mol-1 after a 24 h reaction and up to 18,500 g∙mol-1 after 48 h. The statistical analysis showed that vacuum was the most influential factor affecting the Mn in diphenyl ether. In sharp contrast, enzyme loading was found to be the most influential parameter in bulk conditions. Recyclability in bulk conditions showed a constant Mn of the polyester over three cycles, while a 17% decrease was noticed in solution. The following work finally introduced a statistical approach that can adequately predict the Mn of poly(hexylene adipate) based on the choice of parameter levels, providing a handy tool in the synthesis of polyesters where the control of molecular weight is of importance.

Abstract
Aliphatic polyesters are thermoplastic and biodegradable polymers with promising potentials to substitute synthetic polymers derived from petrochemicals. In particular, polylactides (PLAs) and other polylactones can be renewable and biocompatible. A more benign approach for polyester synthesis is the enzymatic polycondensation or ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reactions, whose outcomes largely depend on the reaction conditions including solvents, water content and temperature. This chapter illustrates several examples of enzymatic polymerization to polyesters using various solvents (i.e., organic solvents, supercritical fluids, ionic liquids, and aqueous biphasic systems). Hydrophobic solvents containing little water tend to promote the enzymatic polymerization and lead to high molecular masses of polyesters. Since some enzymatic polymerization reactions are performed at high temperatures (such as ring-opening polymerization of lactide at >100°C), these processes demand solvents with high boiling points (such as many ionic liquids). Supercritical fluids (such as supercritical CO2) can be "green" solvents, but their compatibility with enzymes and their practicability of scaling up remain as challenges. On the other hand, ionic liquids can be tailored to be compatible with enzymes and to have high thermal stability although the studies of their uses in enzymatic polycondensation and ROP reactions are still at an early stage.
