Variation in Metal-Support Interaction with TiO2 Loading and Synthesis Conditions for Pt-Ti/SBA-15 Active Catalysts in Methane Combustion

The control of catalytic performance using synthesis conditions is one of the main goals of catalytic research. Two series of Pt-Ti/SBA-15 catalysts with different TiO₂ percentages (n = 1, 5, 10, 30 wt.%) were obtained from tetrabutylorthotitanate (TBOT) and peroxotitanate (PT), as titania precursors and Pt impregnation. The obtained catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N₂ sorption, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR) and H₂-chemisorption measurements. Raman spectroscopy showed framework titanium species in low TiO₂ loading samples. The anatase phase was evidenced for samples with higher titania loading, obtained from TBOT, and a mixture of rutile and anatase for those synthesized by PT. The rutile phase prevails in rich TiO₂ catalysts obtained from PT. Variable concentrations of Pt⁰ as a result of the stronger interaction of PtO with anatase and the weaker interaction with rutile were depicted using XPS. TiO₂ loading and precursors influenced the concentration of Pt species, while the effect on Pt nanoparticles' size and uniform distribution on support was insignificant. The Pt/PtO ratio and their concentration on the surface were the result of strong metal-support interaction, and this influenced catalytic performance in the complete oxidation of methane at a low temperature. The highest conversion was obtained for sample prepared from PT with 30% TiO₂.

Experimental and density functional study of the light-assisted gas-sensing performance of a TiO2-CoFe2O4 heterojunction

Toluene gas as a solvent is widely present in industrial production and indoor decoration, and can seriously harm human health even at low concentrations. Furthermore, toluene can be used as a typical biomarker for disease diagnosis. Therefore, the detection of toluene gas is very important. Herein, a hydrothermal method was used to successfully prepare a TiO₂-CoFe₂O₄ heterostructure for detecting toluene gas. The ultraviolet (UV)-visible diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence spectra showed that the bandgap of the heterojunction was considerably shorter than those of pure TiO₂ and CoFe₂O₄, and the recombination of electron-hole pairs was inhibited. At the same time, the response value of the TiO₂-CoFe₂O₄ heterojunction was 10.5 for 20 ppm toluene at 219 °C, which was much better than those of pure TiO₂ and CoFe₂O₄. Moreover, its response value further increased under UV irradiation. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) was innovatively employed in this study to explain in detail how the heterojunction and UV irradiation can improve gas sensitivity through the calculation of the material energy band, adsorption energy, etc. This work provides a good reference for the preparation of high-efficiency and high-sensitivity gas sensors.

Photocurrent Response and Progesterone Degradation by Employing WO3 Films Modified with Platinum and Silver Nanoparticles

The effect of silver (Ag⁰ ) and platinum (Pt⁰ ) metallic nanoparticles (NPs) on WO₃ film was investigated by studying the photocurrent response under polychromatic irradiation. The structural phase revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis indicates a monoclinic crystal nanostructure. WO_3, Ag⁰ /WO_3, and Pt⁰ /WO₃ electrodes were used to degrade 0.35 mg L^-1 progesterone hormone in aqueous solution under polychromatic irradiation for 3h. The studies on degradation were investigated under electrochemically assisted heterogeneous photocatalysis (EHP) conditions. For photodegradation of progesterone, higher performance was achieved when WO₃ was functionalized and when the EHP configuration was adopted with bias at +0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl. This study reveals that incorporation of metallic NPs onto a semiconductor increases its efficiency, thereby preventing electron-hole recombination in the photocatalyst and photoelectrochemical limitations of WO₃ due to surface plasmon resonance and the trapping state. Therefore, efficient advances in the degradation of organic contaminants during water treatment can be realized.

Switchable Intrinsic Defect Chemistry of Titania for Catalytic Applications

The energy crisis is one of the most serious issue that we confront today. Among different strategies to gain access to reliable fuel, the production of hydrogen fuel through the water-splitting reaction has emerged as the most viable alternative. Specifically, the studies on defect-rich TiO2 materials have been proved that it can perform as an efficient catalyst for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water-splitting reactions. In this invited review, we have included a general and critical discussion on the background of titanium sub-oxides structure, defect chemistries and the consequent disorder arising in defect-rich Titania and their applications towards water-splitting reactions. We have particularly emphasized the origin of the catalytic activity in Titania-based material and its effects on the structural, optical and electronic behavior. This review article also summarizes studies on challenging issues on defect-rich Titania and new possible directions for the development of an efficient catalyst with improved catalytic performance.
