Effective solvent-free oxidation of cyclohexene to allylic products with oxygen by mesoporous etched halloysite nanotube supported Co2+

Morphological, Thermal, and Mechanical Properties of Nanocomposites Based on Bio-Polyamide and Feather Keratin-Halloysite Nanohybrid

One solution to comply with the strict regulations of the European Commission and reduce the environmental footprint of composites is the use of composite materials based on bio-polymers and fillers from natural resources. The aim of our work was to obtain and analyze the properties of bio-polymer nanocomposites based on bio-PA (PA) and feather keratin-halloysite nanohybrid. Keratin (KC) was mixed with halloysite (H) as such or with the treated surface under dynamic conditions, resulting in two nanohybrids: KCHM and KCHE. The homogenization of PA with the two nanohybrids was conducted using the extrusion processing process. Two types of nanocomposites, PA-KCHM and PA-KCHE, with 5 wt.% KC and 1 wt.% H were obtained. The properties were analyzed using SEM, XRD, FTIR, RAMAN, TGA, DSC, tensile/impact tests, DMA, and nanomechanical tests. The best results were obtained for PA-KCHE due to the stronger interaction between the components and the uniform dispersion of the nanohybrid in the PA matrix. Improvements in the modulus of elasticity and of the surface hardness by approx. 75% and 30%, respectively, and the resistance to scratch were obtained. These results are promising and constitute a possible alternative to synthetic polymer composites for the automotive industry.

Bio-sorbent from castor oil polyurethane foam containing cellulose-halloysite nanocomposite for removal of manganese, nickel and cobalt ions from water

In order to mitigate the contamination of water with heavy metals, caused by mining dam failures in Brumadinho and Mariana in Brazil, eco-friendly bio-based castor oil polyurethane foams, containing a cellulose-halloysite green nanocomposite were prepared. Polyurethane foams containing none (PUF-0), 5%wt (PUF-5), and 10%wt (PUF-10) of the nanocomposite were obtained. The application of the material in aqueous media was verified through an investigation of the efficiency of adsorption, the adsorption capacity, and the adsorption kinetics in pH= 2 and pH= 6.5 for manganese, nickel, and cobalt ions. An increase of 5.47 times in manganese adsorption capacity was found after only 30 min in contact with a solution having this ion at pH= 6.5 for PUF-5 and 11.38 times for PUF-10 when both were compared with PUF-0. Adsorption efficiency was respectively 68.17% at pH= 2 for PUF-5% and 100% for PUF-10 after 120 h, while for the control foam, PUF-0, the adsorption efficiency was only 6.90%.

Poly(ethyl methacrylate) Composite Coatings Containing Halogen-Free Inorganic Additives with Flame-Retardant Properties

This investigation is motivated by the need for the development of polymer coatings containing inorganic flame-retardant materials (FRMs) and the replacement of toxic halogenated FRMs. A green strategy is reported for the fabrication of poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA)-FRM composite coatings using a dip-coating method. The use of water-isopropanol co-solvent allows the replacement of regular toxic solvents for PEMA. The abilities to form concentrated solutions of high-molecular-mass PEMA and to disperse FRM particles in such solutions are the main factors in the fabrication of coatings using a dip-coating technique. Huntite, halloysite, and hydrotalcite are used as advanced FRMs for the fabrication of PEMA-FRM coatings. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA data are used for the analysis of the microstructure and composition of PEMA-FRM coatings. PEMA and PEMA-FRM coatings provide corrosion protection of stainless steel. The ability to form laminates with different layers using a dip-coating method facilitates the fabrication of composite coatings with enhanced properties.

A sustainable gateway to access 1,8-dioxo-octahydroxanthene scaffolds via a surface-engineered halloysite-based magnetically responsive catalyst

A covalently modified, surface-engineered Cu(ii)@DCH@CPTMS@MHNT nanocatalyst is synthesized, which showed incredible catalytic activity in accessing a library of xanthene scaffolds.

Selective cyclohexene oxidation to allylic compounds over a Cu-triazole framework via homolytic activation of hydrogen peroxide

Utilization of metal-organic frameworks as heterogeneous catalysts is crucial owing to their abundant catalytic sites and well-defined porous structures. Highly robust [Cu3(trz)3(μ3-OH)(OH)2(H2O)4]·2H2O (trz = 1,2,4-triazole) was employed as a catalyst for liquid-phase cyclohexene oxidation with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Possessing the porous structure together with Lewis acid attributes from the triangular [Cu3(trz)3(μ3-OH)] center, selective oxidation of cyclohexene to allylic products gives a molar yield of 31% with 87% selectivity. According to the highly selective allylic production, the reaction over the present Cu-MOF plausibly occurs via homolytic activation of H2O2. This finding elucidates the unique features of the MOF for efficient catalysis of cyclohexene oxidation.

Infrared Nanospectroscopy Reveals DNA Structural Modifications upon Immobilization onto Clay Nanotubes

The growing demand for innovative means in biomedical, therapeutic and diagnostic sciences has led to the development of nanomedicine. In this context, naturally occurring tubular nanostructures composed of rolled sheets of alumino-silicates, known as halloysite nanotubes, have found wide application. Halloysite nanotubes indeed have surface properties that favor the selective loading of biomolecules. Here, we present the first, to our knowledge, structural study of DNA-decorated halloysite nanotubes, carried out with nanometric spatially-resolved infrared spectroscopy. Single nanotube absorption measurements indicate a partial covering of halloysite by DNA molecules, which show significant structural modifications taking place upon loading. The present study highlights the constraints for the use of nanostructured clays as DNA carriers and demonstrates the power of super-resolved infrared spectroscopy as an effective and versatile tool for the evaluation of immobilization processes in the context of drug delivery and gene transfer.

Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Coatings Containing Flame Retardant Additives from Suspensions in Water-2-Propanol

A dip-coating technique is designed for deposition of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) from water/2-propanol mixture, avoiding the use of traditional toxic solvents. Solutions of PMMA macromolecules with high molecular weight (MW) are obtained for a water/2-propanol ratio of 0.15-0.33 and the solubilization mechanism is discussed. The ability to use concentrated PMMA solutions and high MW of the polymer are the key factors for the successful dip coating deposition. The coating mass for 10 g L-1 polymer solutions shows a maximum at a water/2-propanol ratio of 0.25. The deposition yield increases with the polymer concentration increase and with an increasing number of the deposited layers. PMMA deposits protect stainless steel from aqueous corrosion. The coating technique allows for the fabrication of composite coatings, containing flame-retardant materials (FRMs), such as commercial halloysite, huntite, hydrotalcite, and synthesized Al(OH)3, in the PMMA matrix. The FRM content in the coatings is modified by variation of the FRM content in colloidal suspensions. A fundamentally new method is developed, which is based on the salting out aided dispersive extraction of Al(OH)3 from the aqueous synthesis medium to 2-propanol. It is based on the use of hexadecylphosphonic acid molecules as extractors. The method offers advantages of reduced agglomeration.

Porphyrin–Nanodiamond Hybrid Materials—Active, Stable and Reusable Cyclohexene Oxidation Catalysts

The quest for active, yet “green” non-toxic catalysts is a continuous challenge. In this work, covalently linked hybrid porphyrin–nanodiamonds were prepared via ipso nitro substitution reaction and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The amine-functionalized nanodiamonds (ND@NH2) and 2-nitro-5,10,15,20-tetra(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)porphyrin covalently linked to nanodiamonds (ND@βNH-TPPpCF3) were tested using Allium cepa as a plant model, and showed neither phytotoxicity nor cytotoxicity. The hybrid nanodiamond–copper(II)–porphyrin material ND@βNH-TPPpCF3-Cu(II) was also evaluated as a reusable catalyst in cyclohexene allylic oxidation, and displayed a remarkable turnover number (TON) value of ≈265,000, using O2 as green oxidant, in the total absence of sacrificial additives, which is the highest activity ever reported for said allylic oxidation. Additionally, ND@βNH-TPPpCF3-Cu(II) could be easily separated from the reaction mixture by centrifugation, and reused in three consecutive catalytic cycles without major loss of activity.

Naturally derived nano- and micro-drug delivery vehicles: halloysite, vaterite and nanocellulose

We discuss prospects for halloysite nanotubes, vaterite crystals and nanocellulose to enter the market of biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering, and their potential for economically viable production from abundant natural sources.

Functionalization of halloysite nanotubes by enlargement and layer-by-layer assembly for controlled release of the fungicide iodopropynyl butylcarbamate

Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) is currently one of the most important fungicides widely used for industrial coatings and bamboo treatment. In this work, a controlled release composite with IPBC for inhibition of mold and stain fungi was prepared using enlarged halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers. The acid-treated HNTs retained their tubular structure with increased internal diameter, and IPBC loading efficiency was therefore increased to 24.4%, approximately three times the amount of raw HNTs (8.4%). In vitro drug release assay showed that IPBC could be released from HNTs in a sustainable manner with a total release amount of 33.8% over a period of 35 days. The release rate of IPBC could be further controlled by adjusting the number of LbL layers on the tubes and the released amount of IPBC could be limited to less than 10% in 100 days. An inhibition zone test indicated the as-prepared nanocomposites exhibited significant anti-fungal performance against three mold fungi (Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma viride, and Penicillium citrinum) and one stain fungus (Botryodiplodia theobromae). The results support the potential use of HNTs for a prolonged service life of bamboo products.

Controlled release of iodopropynyl butylcarbamate from functionalized halloysite nanotubes was realized by coating with LbL polyelectrolyte multilayers, with potential for protection of bamboo materials with a prolonged lifetime.

Magnetically separable and reusable rGO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the selective liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexene to 1,2-cyclohexane diol

A series of magnetically separable rGO/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites with various amounts of graphene oxide were successfully prepared by a simple ultrasonication assisted precipitation combined with a solvothermal method and their catalytic activity was evaluated for the selective liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexene using hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant. The prepared materials were characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, BET/BJH, XPS and VSM analysis. The presence of well crystallized Fe₃O₄ as the active iron species was seen in the crystal studies of the nanocomposites. The electron microscopy analysis indicated the fine surface dispersion of spherical Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles on the thin surface layers of partially-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. The decoration of Fe₃O₄ nanospheres on thin rGO layers was clearly observable in all of the nanocomposites. The XPS analysis was performed to evaluate the chemical states of the elements present in the samples. The surface area of the nanocomposites was increased significantly by increasing the amount of GO and the pore structures were effectively tuned by the amount of rGO in the nanocomposites. The magnetic saturation values of the nanocomposites were found to be sufficient for their efficient magnetic separation. The catalytic activity results show that the cyclohexene conversion reached 75.3% with a highest 1,2-cyclohexane diol selectivity of 81% over 5% rGO incorporated nanocomposite using H₂O₂ as the oxidant and acetonitrile as the solvent at 70 °C for 6 h. The reaction conditions were further optimized by changing the variables and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed. The enhanced catalytic activity of the nanocomposites for cyclohexene oxidation could be attributed to the fast accomplishment of the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ redox cycle in the composites due the sacrificial role of rGO and its synergistic effect with Fe₃O₄, originating from the conjugated network of π-electrons in its surface structure. The rapid and easy separation of the magnetic nanocomposites from the reaction mixture using an external magnet makes the present catalysts highly efficient for the reaction. Moreover, the catalyst retained its activity for five repeated runs without any drastic drop in the reactant conversion and product selectivity.
