A dual-functional luminescent Tb(iii) metal-organic framework for the selective sensing of acetone and TNP in water

Confined-based catalyst investigation through the comparative functionalization and defunctionalization of Zr-MOF

In metal-organic frameworks, confined space as a chemical nanoreactor is as important as organocatalysis or coordinatively unsaturated metal site catalysis. In the present study, a set of mixed-ligand structures with UiO-66 architecture have been prepared. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, structures derived by the solvothermal mixing ligand method and ultrasonic-assisted linker exchange approaches have been compared. Additionally, the relationship between the preparation method, structural properties, and catalytic efficiency of the prepared materials in the Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes has been investigated. The prepared catalyst is very stable and can be recovered and reused for at least ten periods.

A Ni-MOF based luminescent sensor for selective and rapid sensing of Fe(ii) and Fe(iii) ions

In this work, a bis(N,N-trimellitoyl)-4,4′-oxydianiline linker was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structure and luminescence intensity of the Ni-MOF treated with different metal ions were investigated.

Hydrazone connected stable luminescent covalent-organic polymer for ultrafast detection of nitro-explosives

Developing promising luminescent probes for the selective sensing of nitro-explosives remains a challenging issue. Porous luminescent covalent–organic polymers are one of the excellent sensing probes for trace hazardous materials. Herein, fluorescent monomers 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-formyl-(1,1′-biphenyl))ethane (TFBE) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid trihydrazide (BTCH) were selected to build a novel hydrazone connected stable luminescent covalent–organic polymer (H-COP) of high stability by typical Schiff-base reaction. The N₂ sorption study, BET surface area analysis, and TGA profile indicate the porosity and stability of this H-COP material. Such properties of the H-COP material enable a unique sensing platform for nitro-explosives with great sensitivity (Ksv ∼ 10⁶ M) and selectivity up to μM. This polymer material shows attractive selectivity and sensitivity towards phenolic nitro-explosives and other common explosives among earlier reported COP-based sensors.

A novel H-COP was synthesized through Schiff-base condensation reaction, which shows high sensitivity (K_sv ∼ 10⁶ M⁻¹) and selectivity (μM level) towards nitro-explosives.

Synthesis, structure and magnetocaloric properties of a new two-dimensional gadolinium(III) coordination polymer based on azobenzene-2,2',3,3'-tetracarboxylic acid

A new Gd3+ coordination polymer (CP), namely, poly[diaqua[μ4-1'-carboxy-3,3'-(diazene-1,2-diyl)dibenzene-1,2,2'-tricarboxylato]gadolinium(III)], [Gd(C16H7N2O8)(H2O)2]n, (I), has been synthesized hydrothermally from Gd(NO3)3·6H2O and azobenzene-2,2',3,3'-tetracarboxylic acid (H4abtc). The target solid has been characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and susceptibility measurements. CP (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The structure features a 4-connected topology in which Gd3+ ions are connected by carboxylate groups into a linear chain along the monoclinic symmetry direction. Adjacent one-dimensional aggregates are bridged by Habtc3- ligands to form a two-dimensional CP in the (10-1) plane. A very short hydrogen bond [O...O = 2.4393 (4) Å] links neighbouring layers into a three-dimensional network. A magnetic study revealed antiferromagnetic Gd...Gd coupling within the chain direction. CP (I) displays a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), with a maximum -ΔSm of 27.26 J kg-1 K-1 for ΔH = 7 T at 3.0 K. As the MCE in (I) exceeds that of the commercial magnetic refrigerant GGG (Gd3Ga5O12, -ΔSm = 24 J kg-1 K-1, ΔH = 30 kG), CP (I) can be regarded as a potential cryogenic material for low-temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Applications of MOFs as Luminescent Sensors for Environmental Pollutants

The environmental pollution has become a serious issue because the pollutants can cause permanent damage to the DNA, nervous system, and circulating system, resulting in various incurable diseases, such as organ failure, malformation, angiocardiopathy, and cancer. The effective detection of environmental pollutants is urgently needed to keep them far away from daily life. Among the reported pollutant sensors, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) with tunable structures have attracted remarkable attention to detect the pollutants because of their excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and recyclability. Although lots of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based luminescent sensors have been summarized and discussed in previous reviews, the detection of environmental pollutants, especially radioactive ions and heavy metal ions, still have not been systematically presented. Here, the sensing mechanisms and construction principles of luminescent MOFs are discussed, and the state-of-the-art MOF-based luminescent sensors of environmental pollutants, including pesticides, antibiotics, explosives, VOCs, toxic gas, toxic small molecules, radioactive ions, and heavy metal ions are highlighted. This comprehensive review may further guide the development of luminescent MOFs and promote their practical applications for sensing environmental pollutants.

Highly Sensitive Optical Detection of Escherichia coli Using Terbium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are envisaged as highly useful for the development of biosensors. Herein, for the first time, we report the optical detection of Escherichia coli using a water-dispersible terbium MOF (Tb-BTC; BTC, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid). The successful synthesis of Tb-BTC is verified using spectroscopic and morphological techniques like UV-vis, fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electron microscopy. Tb-BTC has been bio-interfaced with anti-E. coli antibodies and then investigated as a biosensor for E. coli. The biosensor displays detection ability in an analyte concentration range of 1.3 × 10² to 1.3 × 10⁸ cfu/mL with a detection limit of 3 cfu/mL, having a response time of 5 min and a total analysis time of about 20-25 min. The results are also found to be reproducible and specific in the presence of some other interfering bacterial species. As demonstrated, the present sensor provides highly sensitive and specific detection of E. coli in fruit juice sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to showcase the potential of the MOF-based fluorescent biosensor for the detection of E. coli.

A stable LnMOF as a highly efficient and selective luminescent sensor for detecting malachite green in water and real samples

A series of isostructural 3D lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs), with the formula n(H3O)[Ln(L)(H2O)] n ·nH2O (Ln = Gd 1, Eu 2 and Tb 3, H4L = 3,5,3',5'-oxytetrabenzoic acid), have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1-3 are constructed from wave-like Ln-carboxylate chains which are further connected by the ligands to form 3D channel-type frameworks. Further experiments suggest that 3 is thermally stable up to 322 °C and exhibits outstanding chemical stability in aqueous solutions with the pH ranging from 3 to 11. Significantly, 3 can be utilized for the first time to detect malachite green (a synthetic antibiotic to cure saprolegniasis) in aqueous media even in the presence of other interfering antibiotics, with a high sensitivity (K sv = 8.33 × 104 M-1), low detection limit (DL = 0.25 μM) and good recyclability. On a more practical note, we found that the luminescence intensity of 3 showed almost no response to pH changes (pH 3-11), allowing steady sensing in real samples such as river water, simulated human serum and urine with satisfactory recoveries and RSD.

Investigation of structural, electronic and magnetic properties of breathing metal-organic framework MIL-47(Mn): a first principles approach

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the MIL-47(Mn) metal-organic framework are investigated using first principles calculations. We find that the large-pore structure is the ground state of this material. We show that upon transition from the large-pore to the narrow-pore structure, the magnetic ground-state configuration changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, consistent with the computed values of the intra-chain coupling constant. Furthermore, the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic configuration phases have intrinsically different electronic behavior: the former is semiconducting, the latter is a metal or half-metal. The change of electronic properties during breathing posits MIL-47(Mn) as a good candidate for sensing and other applications. Our calculated electronic band structure for MIL-47(Mn) presents a combination of flat dispersionless and strongly dispersive regions in the valence and conduction bands, indicative of quasi-1D electronic behavior. The spin coupling constants are obtained by mapping the total energies onto a spin Hamiltonian. The inter-chain coupling is found to be at least one order of magnitude smaller than the intra-chain coupling for both large and narrow pores. Interestingly, the intra-chain coupling changes sign and becomes five times stronger going from the large pore to the narrow pore structure. As such MIL-47(Mn) could provide unique opportunities for tunable low-dimensional magnetism in transition metal oxide systems.

Exploration of interaction mechanism of tyrosol as a potent anti-inflammatory agent

Drug discovery for a vigorous and feasible lead candidate is a challenging scientific mission as it requires expertise, experience, and huge investment. Natural products and their derivatives having structural diversity are renowned source of therapeutic agents since many years. Tyrosol (a natural phenylethanoid) has been extracted from olive oil, and its structure was confirmed by elemental analysis, FT-IR, FT-NMR, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The conformational analysis for tyrosol geometry was performed by Gaussian 09 in terms of density functional theory. Validation of bond lengths and bond angles obtained experimentally as well as theoretically were performed with the help of curve fitting analysis, and values of correlation coefficient (R) obtained as 0.988 and 0.984, respectively. The charge transfer within the tyrosol molecule was confirmed by analysis of HOMO→LUMO molecular orbitals. In molecular docking with COX-2 (PDB ID: 5F1A), tyrosol was found to possess satisfactory binding affinity as compared to other NSAIDs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen) and a COX-2 selective drug (Celecoxib). ADMET prediction, drug-likeness and bioactivity score altogether confirm the lead/drug like potential of tyrosol. Further investigation of simulation quality plot, RMSD and RMSF plots, ligands behavior plot as well as post simulation analysis manifest the consistency of 5F1A-tyrosol complex throughout the 20 ns molecular simulation process that signifies its compactness and stability within the receptor pocket. Extrapolation of phenolic compounds as multi-target agents against cancer and inflammation

Natural products acquire massive structural and chemical diversity, which cannot be coordinated by any synthetic libraries for small molecules and they are continuing to inspire novel discoveries in health sciences. We have performed the computational calculations for geometry optimization and prediction of electronic and structural properties of some plant phenolic compounds through Gaussian 09 program. Energies of molecular orbitals were computed, to mimic out the stabilities arising from charge delocalization and intramolecular interactions. This process indicated the eventual charge transfer within the molecules. The molecular docking and ADMET properties of these compounds with a novel anticancer (HER2) and anti-inflammatory (COX-2) targets revealed that two molecules were capable of inhibiting both the targets, and could be used as multi target inhibitors. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation studies were performed to elucidate the binding mechanism and the comparison of inhibitor's binding mode with diverse biological activities as anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents. A high-quality association was reported among quantum chemical, ADMET, docking, dynamics and MMGBSA results. Communicated By Ramaswamy H. Sarma.
