Conjugated polymers containing tetraphenylethylene in the backbones and side-chains for highly sensitive TNT detection

Luminescent Papers with Asymmetric Complexes of Eu(III) and Tb(III) in Polymeric Matrices and Suggested Combinations for Color Tuning

Complexes of lanthanide ions, such as Eu(III) (red light emission) and Tb(III) (green light emission), with proper ligands can be highly luminescent and color-tunable, also attaining yellow and orange emission under UV radiation. The ligands employed in this work were poly(sodium acrylate), working as polymeric matrix, and 1,10-phenanthroline, taking advantage of its antenna effect. Possibilities of color display were further enhanced by incorporating a cationic polyfluorene with blue emission. This strategy allowed for obtaining cyan and magenta, besides the aforementioned colors. Uncoated cellulose paper was impregnated with the resulting luminescent inks, observing a strong hypsochromic shift in excitation wavelength upon drying. Hence, while a cheap UV-A lamp sufficed to reveal the polyfluorene's blue emission, shorter wavelengths were necessary to visualize the emission due to lanthanide ions as well. The capacity to reveal, with UV-C radiation, a full-color image that remains invisible under natural light is undoubtedly useful for anti-counterfeiting applications. Furthermore, both lanthanide ion complexes and polyfluorenes were shown to have their luminescence quenched by Cu(II) ions and nitroarenes, respectively.

Non-covalent functionalization of graphene sheets by pyrene-endcapped tetraphenylethene: Enhanced aggregation-induced emission effect and application in explosive detection

In this work, a dispersible graphene-based material with a characteristic of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was prepared by wet chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO). During the GO reduction process, a conjugated molecule TPEP containing tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and pyrene was employed as a stabilizer because of the π–π interactions and the wrapping effect. The as-prepared rGO-TPEP not only has good dispersion in solution but also processes the AIE feature. Its fluorescence intensity is 2.23 times higher than that of TPEP at the same condition. The unique optical properties and AIE effect enable the rGO-TPEP as a chemical sensor for highly sensitive explosive detection in aggregated state and solid state. In the aggregated state, trace 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) can be detected by the rGO-TPEP even when the concentration is as low as 0.91 ppm, and the quenching constant is as high as 2.47 × 104 M^-1.

Paper-Based Probes with Visual Response to Vapors from Nitroaromatic Explosives: Polyfluorenes and Tertiary Amines

Although it is well-known that nitroaromatic compounds quench the fluorescence of different conjugated polymers and form colored Meisenheimer complexes with proper nucleophiles, the potential of paper as a substrate for those macromolecules can be further developed. This work undertakes this task, impregnating paper strips with a fluorene-phenylene copolymer with quaternary ammonium groups, a bisfluorene-based cationic polyelectrolyte, and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (polyDMAEMA). Cationic groups make the aforementioned polyfluorenes attachable to paper, whose surface possesses a slightly negative charge and avoid interference from cationic quenchers. While conjugated polymers had their fluorescence quenched with nitroaromatic vapors in a non-selective way, polyDMAEMA-coated papers had a visual response that was selective to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), and that could be easily identified, and even quantified, under natural light. Far from implying that polyfluorenes should be ruled out, it must be taken into account that TNT-filled mines emit vapors from 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) and dinitrobenzene isomers, which are more volatile than TNT itself. Atmospheres with only 790 ppbv TNT or 277 ppbv DNT were enough to trigger a distinguishable response, although the requirement for certain exposure times is an important limitation.

Pyrrole-Embedded Linear and Helical Graphene Nanoribbons

Linear and helical graphene nanoribbons (L-PyGNR and H-PyGNR) bearing electron-rich pyrrole units have been synthesized by using the photochemical cyclodehydrochlorination (CDHC) reaction. The pyrrole units in the polymer backbone make the polymer electron-rich with moderate bandgap values and relatively high HOMO energy levels. The planarization of the pyrrole unit through cyclization yields a bandgap value almost 0.5 eV lower than that measured for polypyrrole. Conductivity values in the thin film up to 0.12 S/cm were measured for the chemically oxidized L-PyGNR (four-point method). Both GNRs showed excellent fluorescence sensing properties for TNT in solution with K_SV values up to 6.4 × 10⁶ M^-1.

Aggregation-induced emission from the crowded coronal chains of block copolymer micelles

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was triggered via the spatial confinement in the coronal chains in block copolymers upon micellization, even with very low content of AIE groups attached, and this could be used to monitor the self-assembly process.

Synthesis of fluorescent polycarbonates with highly twisted N,N-bis(dialkylamino)anthracene AIE luminogens in the main chain

A synthetic route to embed aggregation-induced-emission-(AIE)-active luminophores in polycarbonates (PCs) in various ratios is reported. The AIE-active monomer is based on the structure of 9,10-bis(piperidyl)anthracene. The obtained PCs display good film-forming properties, similar to those observed in poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (Ba-PC). The fluorescence quantum yield (Φ) of the PC with 5 mol% AIE-active monomer was 0.04 in solution and 0.53 in solid state. Moreover, this PC is also miscible with commercially available Ba-PC at any blending ratio. A combined analysis by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry did not indicate any clear phase separation. These results thus suggest that even engineering plastics like polycarbonates can be functionalized with AIE luminogens without adverse effects on their physical properties.

Fluorescent Amorphous Distyrylnaphthalene-Based Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization and Thin-Film Nanomolar Sensing of Nitroaromatics in Water

Two new fluorescent segmented conjugated polymers with either 1,4- or 2,6-distyrylnaphthalene chromophores and their model compounds were synthesized and the chemosensing abilities of the polymeric thin films to detect nitroaromatics (NACs) in aqueous media were evaluated. The structural, thermal and optical properties of the polymers were correlated with those displayed by their corresponding model compounds. Changes in the connectivity of naphthylene units caused minor differences in optical properties, morphology and quenching efficiencies. Molecular modeling highlighted the extremely bent character of polymer microstructures that explains their high solubility and amorphous character. Polymeric films are amorphous, strongly fluorescent and showed remarkable quenching efficiencies in the nanomolar range with picric acid (PA) and trinitrotoluene (TNT). Quenching experiments using either different nitroaromatic quenchers, excitation wavelengths, excitation beam path-lengths, or time of exposure of the film to the quenching solution evidenced the dominant role of inner filter effects (IFE) in the polymer response to NACs in the micromolar range. The sensing response towards PA, a quencher that strongly absorbs at the excitation wavelength, has an IFE contribution even at the nanomolar range, while the response towards the non-absorbing TNT depends only on the quenching occurring after diffusion of the analyte into the film.

Construction of Functional Hyperbranched Poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s by Metal-Free Phenylpropiolate-Azide Polycycloaddition

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of activated internal alkynes with azides has been developed into an efficient polymerization reaction for constructing functional linear 1,4,5-trisubstitued polytriazoles. However, it is rarely employed for the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. In this work, metal-free polycycloadditions of tris(3-phenylpropiolate)s (1) and tetraphenylethene-containing diazides (2) are performed in dimethylformamide at 100 °C for 7 and 12 h, producing hyperbranched poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s (hb-PPTCs) with high molecular weights and satisfactory regioregularities in good yields. The hb-PPTCs have good solubility in common organic solvents and high thermal stability. They are non-emissive in solutions, but emit intensively upon aggregation, showing an aggregation-induced emission effect. Their aggregates can work as fluorescent sensors for explosive detection with high sensitivity. Furthermore, the polymers can be utilized for the fabrication of 2D fluorescent patterns with high resolution by UV irradiation through copper grid masks.
