Phosphine-catalyzed (3+3) annulation of cinnamaldehyde-derived Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates with dinucleophiles

The phosphine-catalyzed (3+3) annulation reaction of cinnamaldehyde-derived Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds as dinucleophiles has been developed, giving hexahydrochromenone derivatives in high yields with moderate to good diastereoselectivities. The reaction worked through double conjugate addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to the phosphonium intermediates generated from the cinnamaldehyde-derived MBH carbonates.

Phosphine-Catalyzed (4 + 2) Annulation of Allenoates Bearing Acidic Hydrogen with 1,1-Dicyanoalkenes

α-succinimide-substituted allenoates were employed as phosphine acceptors in phosphine-catalyzed (4 + 2) annulation with 1,1-dicyanoalkenes. They served as C4 synthons in the annulation reaction under mild reaction conditions and produced hexahydroisoindole derivatives in moderate to high yields with good to excellent diastereoselectivities.

Palladium-Catalyzed [5 + 4] Cycloaddition of 4-Vinyl-4-Butyrolactones with N-Tosyl Azadienes: Construction of Nine-Membered Ring

In this paper, we reported the palladium-catalyzed formal [5 + 4] cycloaddition reactions between 4-vinyl-4-butyrolactones (VBLs) and azadienes. Under mild reaction conditions, a wide range of benzofuran-fused 9-membered heterocyclic compounds had been provided in moderate to excellent yields with exclusive regioselectivities and excellent diastereoselectivities. The practical applicability of the synthesis was demonstrated through scale-up reaction and further transformation.

Diastereoselective Synthesis of Allenes through Phosphine-Catalyzed Cascade Isomerization/Annulation

Phosphine-catalyzed cascade isomerization/annulation has been developed to realize a diastereoselective synthesis of allenes installed on the hexahydropentalene skeleton, which contains five chiral centers (and one axial chirality). This reaction tolerated a broad range of allenoates and enynes. The allene products were transformed to various halogen-substituted fused-ring compounds.

Phosphine-Catalyzed (3 + 2) Annulation of γ-Substituted Cinnamic Aldehyde-Derived Morita-Baylis-Hillman Carbonates through Remote Activation

A series of γ-substituted Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates were synthesized and subjected to phosphine-catalyzed annulations with electrophilic exocyclic alkenes, giving various valuable spirocyclopentenes in moderate to excellent yields with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities. A large scope of MBH carbonates bearing γ-hydrogen, alkenyl, and alkynyl substituents was well tolerated. The annulation unprecedentedly involves β-, γ-, and δ-carbons of MBH carbonates.

Catalyst-free inverse-electron-demand aza-Diels-Alder reaction of 4,4-dicyano-2-methylenebut-3-enoates and 1,3,5-triazinanes: access to polysubstituted tetrahydropyridines

An inverse-electron-demand aza-Diels-Alder reaction between 4,4-dicyano-2-methylenebut-3-enoates and 1,3,5-triazinanes under catalyst-free and additive-free conditions was developed, which provided a highly convenient and straightforward method to construct a series of polyfunctionalized tetrahydropyridines in high yields. This strategy features numerous advantages, including high efficiency, good functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope, and environmentally friendly conditions.

[4 + 2] Annulation of δ-Hydroxy/δ-Sulfonamido-α,β-Unsaturated Ketones with Azlactones for Diastereoselective Synthesis of Highly Substituted 3-Amino-δ-Lactones and 3-Amino-δ-Lactams

The first base-mediated [4 + 2] annulation of δ-hydroxy-α,β-unsaturated ketones with azlactones has been developed, through which 3,4-disubstituted 3-amino-δ-lactones were obtained in good yields and with excellent diastereoselectivities. This approach was also applied to the [4 + 2] annulation of δ-sulfonamido-α,β-unsaturated ketones, which provided a practical protocol for constructing biologically important 3-amino-δ-lactam frameworks.

[6 + 3] Annulations of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates and dicyanoheptafulvene

A [6 + 3] annulation reaction of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates and dicyanoheptafulvene is accomplished by employing commercially available triphenylphosphine as the Lewis base catalyst. A spectrum of densely functionalized bicyclo[4.3.1]decane architectures are efficiently constructed with exclusive diastereoselectivity and good yield (up to 95%).

Unexpected ring-opening of 2,3-dihydropyridines

The reaction of 2,3-dihydropyridines with sulfonyl halides surprisingly yielded open chain dienes with sulfonylimine structure. The products were specific out of several possible isomers and, therefore, a separation of isomers was not necessary. All new compounds were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, HRMS, and NMR spectroscopy. A bicyclic by-product from the reaction of a 2,3-dihydropyridine with mesyl chloride was isolated and its structure elucidated using a single X-ray crystal analysis. Some biological activities, like antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties were investigated.

Dehydrogenative Aza-[4 + 2] Cycloaddition of Amines with 1,3-Dienes via Dual Catalysis

We describe a synergistic utilization of copper catalysis and proton-transfer catalysis that enables an atom- and step-economical aza-[4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of readily available N-arylamino carbonyl compounds with simple 1,3-dienes. The reaction proceeds smoothly under an air atmosphere and produces water as the sole side product. Whereas the amines can directly serve as the C- and N-atom donors, this operationally simple protocol provides green, rapid, and efficient access to 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridines with a broad scope.

Phosphine-Catalyzed Cascade Annulation of MBH Carbonates and Diazenes: Synthesis of Hexahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrazole Derivatives

A phosphine-catalyzed cascade annulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates and diazenes was achieved, giving tetrahydropyrazole-fused heterocycles bearing two five-membered rings in moderate to excellent yields. The reaction underwent an unprecedented reaction mode of MBH carbonates, in which two molecules of MBH carbonates were fully merged into the ring system.

Phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of β-sulfonamido-substituted enones with trans-α-cyano-α,β-unsaturated ketones for the synthesis of highly substituted pyrrolidines

To synthesize highly substituted pyrrolidines, we developed a phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of β-sulfonamido-substituted enones with trans-α-cyano-α,β-unsaturated ketones. We prepared a series of pyrrolidines under mild conditions with high yields and moderate-to-good diastereoselectivities. A catalytic mechanism for this reaction is suggested.

To synthesize highly substituted pyrrolidines, we developed a phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of β-sulfonamido-substituted enones with trans-α-cyano-α,β-unsaturated ketones.

Phosphine-Catalyzed Sequential [3+3]/Aza-6π-Electrocyclization Reaction of Cross-Conjugated Azatrienes and δ-Sulfonamido-Allenoates

An unprecedented sequential [3+3]/aza-6π-electrocyclization between cross-conjugated azatrienes and δ-sulfonamido-allenoates, catalyzed by phosphine, has been developed, which provides efficient and facile access to highly functionalized tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives. The products can be easily transformed into (dihydro)isoquinolines and their fused polycyclic compounds. The reactivity of both azatrienes and δ-sulfonamido-allenoates in this text, acting as a five-atom unit, is unique in the phosphine-catalyzed annulations of allenoates.

Phosphine-Catalyzed Cascade Michael Addition/[4+2] Cycloaddition Reaction of Allenoates and 2-Arylidene-1,3-indanediones

The phosphine-catalyzed cascade Michael addition/[4+2] cycloaddition reaction of tetrahydrobenzofuranone-derived allenoates and 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones has been reported, affording spirocyclic 1,3-indanedione derivatives in moderate to high yields with moderate to good diastereoselectivities. A scaled-up reaction worked well under mild conditions, and a plausible mechanism is proposed.

Recent advances in the application of ring-closing metathesis for the synthesis of unsaturated nitrogen heterocycles

This short review summarizes recent advances relating to the application of ring-closing olefin-olefin and carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions towards the synthesis of unsaturated five- and six-membered nitrogen heterocycles. These developments include catalyst modifications and reaction designs that will enable access to more complex nitrogen heterocycles.

Phosphine-Promoted [4 + 3] Annulation of Allenoate with Aziridines for Synthesis of Tetrahydroazepines: Phosphine-Dependent [3 + 3] and [4 + 3] Pathways

In this manuscript, phosphine-dependent [3 + 3] and [4 + 3] annulation reactions of allenoate with aziridines were disclosed. The alkyldiphenylphosphine-promoted [4 + 3] annulation of allenoate with aziridines has been achieved under mild conditions, providing biologically interesting functionalized tetrahydroazepines in moderate to excellent yield with moderate to excellent regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity.
