Ferromagnetically Coupled Chromium(III) Dimer Shows Luminescence and Sensitizes Photon Upconversion

There has been much progress on mononuclear chromium(III) complexes featuring luminescence and photoredox activity, but dinuclear chromium(III) complexes have remained underexplored in these contexts until now. We identified a tridentate chelate ligand able to accommodate both meridional and facial coordination of chromium(III), to either access a mono- or a dinuclear chromium(III) complex depending on reaction conditions. This chelate ligand causes tetragonally distorted primary coordination spheres around chromium(III) in both complexes, entailing comparatively short excited-state lifetimes in the range of 400 to 800 ns in solution at room temperature and making photoluminescence essentially oxygen insensitive. The two chromium(III) ions in the dimer experience ferromagnetic exchange interactions that result in a high spin (S=3) ground state with a coupling constant of +9.3 cm-1. Photoinduced energy transfer from the luminescent ferromagnetically coupled dimer to an anthracene derivative results in sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion. Based on these proof-of-principle studies, dinuclear chromium(III) complexes seem attractive for the development of fundamentally new types of photophysics and photochemistry enabled by magnetic exchange interactions.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Thiophene-Bridged Macrocyclic pseudo-meta [2.2]Paracyclophanes

Chiral organic molecules possessing high quantum yields, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence values have great potential as optically active materials for future applications. Recently, the identification of a promising class of inherently chiral compounds was reported, namely macrocyclic 1,3-butadiyne-linked pseudo-meta[2.2]paracyclophanes, displaying high circular dichroism and related gabs values albeit modest quantum yields. Increasing the quantum yields in an attempt to get bright circularly polarized light emitters, the high-yielding heterocyclization of those 1,3-butadiyne bridges resulting in macrocyclic 2,5-thienyls-linked pseudo-meta [2.2]paracyclophanes is herein described. The chiroptical properties of both, the previously reported 1,3-butadiyne, and the novel 2,5-thienyl bridged macrocycles of various sizes, are experimentally recorded, and theoretically described using density-functional theory.

Synthesis, characterization and anticancer properties: A series of highly selective palladium(II) substituted-terpyridine complexes

Ten new palladium(II) complexes [PdCl(L^1-10)]Cl have been synthesized by the reaction of palladium(II) chloride and ten 4'-(substituted-phenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine ligands bearing hydrogen(L¹), p-hydroxyl(L²), m-hydroxyl (L³), o-hydroxyl (L⁴), methyl (L⁵), phenyl (L⁶), fluoro (L⁷), chloro (L⁸), bromo (L⁹), or iodo (L¹⁰). Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, elemental analysis and/or single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Their in vitro anticancer activities were investigated based on five cell lines, including four cancer cell lines (A549, Eca-109, Bel-7402, MCF-7) and one normal cell line (HL-7702). The results show that these complexes possess a strong killing effect on the cancer cells but a weak proliferative inhibition on the normal cells, implying their high inhibitory selectivity for the proliferation of the cancer cell lines. Flow cytometry characterization reveals that these complexes affect cell proliferation mainly in the G0/G1 phase and induce the late apoptotic of the cells. The quantity of palladium(II) ion in extracted DNA was determined by ICP-MS, which proved that these complexes target genomic DNA. And the strong affinity of the complexes with CT-DNA were confirmed by UV-Vis spectrum and circular dichroism (CD). The possible binding modes of the complexes with DNA were further explored by molecular docking. As the concentration of complexes 1-10 gradually increases, the fluorescence intensity of bovine serum albumin (BSA) decreases by a static quenching mechanism.

Geländer Molecules with Orthogonal Joints: Synthesis of Macrocyclic Dimers

Orthogonal joints, understood as connections with an angle of 90°, were introduced in the design of the "Geländer" model compounds 1 and 2. The banister, consisting of a conjugated carbazole dimer linked by either 1,3-butadiyne (2) or a single thiophene (1), wraps around an axis composed of a phthalimide dimer due to the dimensional mismatch of both subunits, which are interconnected by phenylene rungs. The "Geländer" structure was assembled from a monomer comprising the 1,4-diaminobenzene rung with one amino substituent as part of a 4-bromo phthalimide subunit forming the orthogonal junction to the axis, and the other as part of a masked 2-ethynyl carbazole as orthogonal joint to the banister. The macrocycle was obtained by two sequential homocoupling steps. A first dimerization by a reductive homocoupling assembled the axis, while an oxidative acetylene coupling served as ring-closing reaction. The formed butadiyne was further derivatized to a thiophene, rendering all carbons of the model compound sp² hybridized. Both helical structures were fully characterized and chirally resolved. Assignment of the enantiomers was achieved by simulation of chiroptical properties and enantiopure synthesis.

Resonance Raman Excitation Profiles of Fe(II)-Terpyridine Complexes: Electronic Effects of Ligand Modifications

Metal 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) complexes are readily used as building blocks in metallo-supramolecular polymers that stand out for their photophysical properties in solar energy assemblies. Furthermore, Resonance Raman (RR) excitation profiles are sensitive indicators of the electronic properties of chromophores. Previously, using RR spectroscopy, we studied the [Fe(tpy)₂]²⁺ complex and metallo-supramolecular polymers formed by tpy derivatives and Fe(II) ions. Here, we compare RR spectra of iron (Fe(II)) complexes with 4'-substituted tpy ligands─[Fe(4'-R-tpy)₂]²⁺, with R = H (1a), Cl (2a), 4-chlorophenyl (3a), and 2-thienyl (4a) to describe changes in their electronic structure after functionalization. By combining theoretical calculations, RR, and UV/vis spectra, we elucidated differences in the RR excitation profiles of 1a, 2a, and 4a complexes. In all Raman modes, complexes 1a and 2a showed maximal enhancement only at 532 nm excitation, whereas complex 4a exhibited maximal enhancement selectively at either 532 or 633 nm excitations. Based on our calculations, the mixed metal/ligand character of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of 4a complex manifests itself through selective enhancement of vibration modes, mainly localized on the 2-thienyl unit at 633 nm excitation, which may explain the unique behavior of this complex. Therefore, complex 4a is a prospective candidate for further detailed photophysical explorations toward developing sensitizers for solar cells.

Bicyclic Phenyl-Ethynyl Architectures: Synthesis of a 1,4-Bis(phenylbuta-1,3-diyn-1-yl) Benzene Banister

The novel diacetylene bridged terphenylic macrocycle 1 is presented and discussed in the context of rotationally restricted "Geländer" oligomers. The 1,4-bis(phenylbuta-1,3-diyn-1-yl) benzene bridge of diacetylene 1 is significantly longer than its terphenyl backbone, forcing the bridge to bend around the central pylon. The synthesis of molecule 1 is based to a large extent on acetylene scaffolding strategies, profiting from orthogonal alkyne protection groups to close both macrocyclic subunits by oxidative acetylene coupling sequentially. The spatial arrangement and the dynamic enantiomerization process of the bicyclic target structure 1 are analyzed. In-depth NMR investigations not only reveal an unexpected spatial arrangement with both oligomer strands bent alongside the backbone, but also display the limited stability of the model compound in the presence of molecular oxygen.

Iron in a Cage: Fixation of a Fe(II)tpy2 Complex by Fourfold Interlinking

The coordination sphere of the Fe(II) terpyridine complex 1 is rigidified by fourfold interlinking of both terpyridine ligands. Profiting from an octa-aldehyde precursor complex, the ideal dimensions of the interlinking structures are determined by reversible Schiff-base formation, before irreversible Wittig olefination provided the rigidified complex. Reversed-phase HPLC enables the isolation of the all-trans isomer of the Fe(II) terpyridine complex 1, which is fully characterized. While temperature independent low-spin states were recorded with superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements for both, the open precursor 8 and the interlinked complex 1, evidence of the increased rigidity of the ligand sphere in 1 was provided by proton T2 relaxation NMR experiments. The ligand sphere fixation in the macrocyclized complex 1 even reaches a level resisting substantial deformation upon deposition on an Au(111) surface, as demonstrated by its pristine form in a low temperature ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope experiment.

Improved Photostability of a CuI Complex by Macrocyclization of the Phenanthroline Ligands

The development of molecular materials for conversion of solar energy into electricity and fuels is one of the most active research areas, in which the light absorber plays a key role. While copper(I)‐bis(diimine) complexes [Cu^I(L)₂]⁺ are considered as potent substitutes for [Ru^II(bpy)₃]²⁺, they exhibit limited structural integrity as ligand loss by substitution can occur. In this article, we present a new concept to stabilize copper bis(phenanthroline) complexes by macrocyclization of the ligands which are preorganized around the Cu^I ion. Using oxidative Hay acetylene homocoupling conditions, several Cu^I complexes with varying bridge length were prepared and analyzed. Absorption and emission properties are assessed; rewardingly, the envisioned approach was successful since the flexible 1,4‐butadiyl‐bridged complex does show enhanced MLCT absorption and emission, as well as improved photostability upon irradiation with a blue LED compared to a reference complex.

4,4″-Dichloro-4′-(2-thienyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine

A new thiophene-substituted terpyridine derivative has been prepared and characterized. This ligand features a thiophene heterocycle (as an electrochemically polymerizable unit) as well as two chlorine atoms for further functionalization.
