Experimental evidence of shear waves in fractional viscoelastic rheological models

Fractional viscoelastic rheological models, such as the Kelvin Voigt Fractional Derivative model, have been proposed in the literature for modelling shear wave propagation in soft tissue. In this article, our previously developed wave propagation model for transluminal propagation based on a Kelvin Voigt Fractional Derivative wave equation is experimentally validated. The transluminal procedure uses the transmission and detection of shear waves through the luminal wall. The model was compared against high-speed camera observations in translucent elastography phantoms with similar viscoelastic properties to prostate tissue. An ad hoc cross-correlation procedure was used to reconstruct the angular displacement from the high-speed camera observations. Rheometry and shear wave elastography were used for characterising the shear wave velocity dispersion curve for the phantoms. Fractional viscoelastic properties were derived after fitting the dispersion curve to its analytical expression. Propagation features and amplitude spectra from simulations and high-speed camera observations were compared. The obtained results indicate that the model replicates the experimental observations with acceptable accuracy. The model presented here provides a useful tool to model transluminal procedures based on wave propagation and its interaction with the mechanical properties of the tissue outside the lumen.

Experiments on Single-Phase Nanofluid Heat Transfer Mechanisms in Microchannel Heat Sinks: A Review

For more than 20 years, the use of nanofluids to enhance heat transfer in microchannel heat sinks (MCHSs) has been the subject of a large number of scientific articles. Despite the great potentialities reported in several works, the presence of controversial results and the lack of understanding of heat transfer enhancement mechanisms prevent further advancement in the use of nanofluids as coolants. This article reviews the scientific literature focused on several aspects of nanofluids that have a role in the heat transfer enhancement within the MCHSs: nanofluid stability, thermal conductivity, and particle clustering, as well as the particle–surface interactions, i.e., abrasion, erosion, and corrosion. We also include the most relevant works on the convective heat transfer and MCHSs operated with nanofluids in our review.

The Impact of Nanofluids on Droplet/Spray Cooling of a Heated Surface: A Critical Review

Cooling by impinging droplets has been the subject of several studies for decades and still is, and, in the last few years, the potential heat transfer enhancement obtained thanks to nanofluids’ use has received increased interest. Indeed, the use of high thermal conductivity fluids, such as nanofluids’, is considered today as a possible way to strongly enhance this heat transfer process. This enhancement is related to several physical mechanisms. It is linked to the nanofluids’ rheology, their degree of stabilization, and how the presence of the nanoparticles impact the droplet/substrate dynamics. Although there are several articles on droplet impact dynamics and nanofluid heat transfer enhancement, there is a lack of review studies that couple these two topics. As such, this review aims to provide an analysis of the available literature dedicated to the dynamics between a single nanofluid droplet and a hot substrate, and the consequent enhancement or reduction of heat transfer. Finally, we also conduct a review of the available publications on nanofluids spray cooling. Although using nanofluids in spray cooling may seem a promising option, the few works present in the literature are not yet conclusive, and the mechanism of enhancement needs to be clarified.

Evidence of Sticky Contacts between Wormlike Micelles in Viscoelastic Surfactant Solutions

Many cationic surfactants form highly viscoelastic solutions at concentrations of only a few percent. These solutions contain wormlike micelles (WLM) which can be several micrometers long. The structural relaxation time, τ_s in these solutions can be as long as many seconds, and the zero-shear viscosity can be in the range of 10⁶ Pas. Electric birefringence measurements on such solutions showed four different relaxation times with increasing concentration. The two shortest ones, τ₁ and τ₂ in the μs region were due to the alignment of small rodlike or ringlike micelles. The third one, τ₃, was observed in the viscoelastic region in the ms region and finally, a fourth one, τ₄, which was the same as the structural relaxation time, τ_s. In this article, it is shown that the τ₃ process is due to the formation and opening of contacts between the WLM. The reason for the contacts is the attraction between the WLM which is due to the hydrophobic surfaces of the micelles. The contacts crosslink the WLM and thus form a three-dimensional network. This network is the reason for the high viscosity and viscoelastic properties of the samples. If the attraction between the WLM is reduced by adding glycerol to the solution, the viscosity of the solution breaks down. The same happens if the surface of the WLM is made hydrophilic by the addition of small amphiphilic molecules. The WLM are not destroyed by these procedures.

Stress Contributions in Colloidal Suspensions: The Smooth, the Rough, and the Hairy

The collective properties of colloidal suspensions, including their rheology, reflect an interplay between colloidal and hydrodynamic forces. The surface characteristics of the particles play a crucial role, in particular, for applications in which interparticle distances become small, i.e., at high concentrations or in aggregates. In this Letter, we directly investigate this interplay via the linear viscoelastic response of the suspensions in the high-frequency regime, using particles with controlled surface topographies, ranging from smooth to hairy and rough particles. We focus directly on the stresses at the particle level and reveal a strong impact of the surface topography on the short-range interactions, both dissipative and elastic. As the particle topography becomes more complex, the local stresses depend on how the topography is generated. The findings in this Letter, in particular, show how changes in topography can both screen or enhance the dissipation, which can be used to engineer the properties of dense or aggregated suspensions.

Nanoparticle self-assembly: from interactions in suspension to polymer nanocomposites

Recent experimental results using in particular small-angle scattering to characterize the self-assembly of mainly hard spherical nanoparticles into higher ordered structures ranging from fractal aggregates to ordered assemblies are reviewed. The crucial control of interparticle interactions is discussed, from chemical surface-modification, or the action of additives like depletion agents, to the generation of directional patches and the use of external fields. It is shown how the properties of interparticle interactions have been used to allow inducing and possibly controlling aggregation, opening the road to the generation of colloidal molecules or potentially metamaterials. In the last part, studies of the microstructure of polymer nanocomposites as an application of volume-spanning and stress-carrying aggregates are discussed.
