Pillar[n]arene-Mimicking/Assisted/Participated Carbon Nanotube Materials

The recent progress in pillar[n]arene-assisted/participated carbon nanotube hybrid materials were initially summarized and discussed. The molecular structure of pillar[n]arene could serve different roles in the fabrication of attractive carbon nanotube-based materials. Firstly, pillar[n]arene has the ability to provide the structural basis for enlarging the cylindrical pillar-like architecture by forming one-dimensional, rigid, tubular, oligomeric/polymeric structures with aromatic moieties as the linker, or forming spatially "closed", channel-like, flexible structures by perfunctionalizing with peptides and with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Interestingly, such pillar[n]arene-based carbon nanotube-resembling structures were used as porous materials for the adsorption and separation of gas and toxic pollutants, as well as for artificial water channels and membranes. In addition to the art of organic synthesis, self-assembly based on pillar[n]arene, such as self-assembled amphiphilic molecules, is also used to promote and control the dispersion behavior of carbon nanotubes in solution. Furthermore, functionalized pillar[n]arene derivatives integrated carbon nanotubes to prepare advanced hybrid materials through supramolecular interactions, which could also incorporate various compositions such as Ag and Au nanoparticles for catalysis and sensing.

Nanotube Functionalization: Investigation, Methods and Demonstrated Applications

This review presents an update on nanotube functionalization, including an investigation of their methods and applications. The review starts with the discussion of microscopy and spectroscopy investigations of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The results of transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and resistivity measurements are summarized. The update on the methods of the functionalization of CNTs, such as covalent and non-covalent modification or the substitution of carbon atoms, is presented. The demonstrated applications of functionalized CNTs in nanoelectronics, composites, electrochemical energy storage, electrode materials, sensors and biomedicine are discussed.

Role of heteroatoms and substituents on the structure, reactivity, aromaticity, and absorption spectra of pyrene: a density functional theory study

Effect of heteroatoms viz. BN and substituents viz. –Me (methyl), –OH (hydroxyl), –NH2 (amine), –COOH (carboxyl), and –CN (cyano) on the structural parameters, global reactivity, aromaticity, and UV-visible spectra of pyrene are studied with the help of density functional theory (DFT). Global reactivity parameters such as global hardness (η) and electrophilicity (ω) are calculated using density functional reactivity theory (DFRT). Time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) is explored for interpreting the UV-visible absorption spectra. Aromaticity of the pyrene rings are predicted from the nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) values. Presence of BN unit and substituent induces reasonable impact on the studied parameters. The observed absorption spectra lie predominantly within the UV-region (both blue and red shifts are observed in presence of BN and substituent). HOMO energy and absorption spectra are affected nominally in solvent phase.

Conductive hydrogel composites with autonomous self-healing properties

Conventional conductive hydrogels usually lack self-healing properties, but might be favorable for smart electronic applications. Therefore, we present the fabrication of conductive self-healing hydrogels that merge the merits of electrical conductivity and self-healing properties. The conductive self-healing hydrogel composite was prepared by using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and a poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) copolymer derivative modified with pyrene and borate functional moieties. While the tethered pyrene groups of the copolymer facilitated an even dispersion of the conductive components, i.e., SWCNTs, in aqueous solution viaπ-π stacking, the hydrogel system was formed via covalent dynamic cross-linking through tetrahedral borate ion interaction with the -OH group of PVA. The hydrogel composites exhibited bulk conductivity (1.27 S m^-1 with 8 mg mL^-1 SWCNTs) with a fast and autonomous self-healing ability that restored 95% of the original conductivity within 10 s under ambient conditions. Accordingly, due to their outstanding properties, we postulate that these composites may have potential in biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, wound healing or electronic skins.
