Antimony Bromide Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Compound with a Long-Chain Diamine Showing Switchable Phase Transition and Second-Harmonic Generation Properties

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and potential applications in solar cells. Herein, the organic-inorganic hybrid molecule [N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine]SbBr5 (1) was synthesized by reacting a long-chain organic diamine N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine with SbBr3 as a metal halide precursor in HBr aqueous solution. Compound 1 possesses a one-dimensional chainlike structure with the second-harmonic generation switch and two continuous phase transitions above room temperature. The band gap of compound 1 is about 2.62 eV, exhibiting a semiconductive property, which may have important implications for the development of new optoelectronic devices.

An organic-inorganic hybrid material [Me3NCH2CH2F]FeBr4 exhibits three-step SHG on/off

A novel solid-state second harmonic generation (SHG) organic-inorganic hybrid switch [Me3NCH2CH2F]FeBr4 (1) exhibits genuine three-step "on-off-on-off" SHG-switching above-room temperature, which has potential applications in multi-step optical devices.

High-Temperature Ferroelasticity and Photoluminescence in a 2D Monolayer Perovskite Compound: (C5NH8Br)2PbBr4

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent properties and easy synthesis. As far as we know, most documented ferroelastics mainly focus on the 3D (three-dimensional) perovskites, the 2D monolayer perovskite ferroelastics are rarely reported before. In this work, we synthesized a 2D lead-based perovskite (C₅NH₁₃Br)₂PbBr₄ (1) (C₅NH₁₃Br = 5-bromoamylamine cation) by introducing flexible chain organic cations. The evolution of ferroelastic domains observed by a polarized light microscope confirms that compound 1 undergoes a ferroelastic phase transition at 392/384 K. In addition, its direct band gap is 2.877 eV. Interestingly, the material emits an attractive blue light (quantum yield 5.06%) under UV light. Three structural descriptors are introduced to quantitatively analyze the relationship between structural distortion and the shape of emission peak. This work provides a way to design multifunctional perovskite-type materials.

Three-Dimensional Perovskite Phase Transition Materials with Switchable Second Harmonic Generation Properties Introduced by Homochiral (1S,4S)-2,5-Diazabicyclo[2.2.1]-heptane

Switchable second harmonic generation (SHG) materials have potential applications in information storage, signal processing, and so on because they can switch between SHG-on and SHG-off states. In this work, we designed and synthesized three organic-inorganic hybrid Rb halide three-dimensional (3D) perovskite materials [1S,4S 2,5-2.2.1-H₂dabch]RbX₃·0.5H₂O (X = Cl, 1; Br, 2; I, 3) based on the chiral 1S,4S-2,5-diazabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (1S,4S-2,5-2.2.1-dabch). The selection of homochiral organic cations ensures that the compounds 1∼3 crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric and chiral space group P2₁2₁2₁, which further leads to reversible SHG responses of the three compounds. Through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric measurements, it revealed that the phase transition point of the compounds 1∼3 increased with RbCl, RbBr, and RbI. This is because the hydrogen interaction H···X between the inorganic framework [RbX₃]_n and the organic cation [1S,4S-2,5-2.2.1-H₂dabch]²⁺ is increased with the order of I > Br > Cl. This study can provide an effective molecular design strategy for the exploration and construction of temperature-tunable SHG switching materials.

Ferroelectric Ionic Molecular Crystals with Significant Plasticity and a Low Melting Point: High Performance in Hot-Pressed Polycrystalline Plates and Melt-Grown Crystalline Sheets

Among ferroelectric crystals based on small molecules, plastic/ferroelectric crystals are currently receiving particular attention because they can be used as bulk polycrystals. Herein, we show that an ionic molecular ferroelectric crystal, guanidinium tetrafluoroborate, exhibits significant malleability and multiaxial ferroelectricity despite the absence of a plastic crystal phase. Powder samples of this crystal can be processed into transparent bulk crystalline plates either by press-forming or by melt-growing. The plates show high ferroelectric performance and related properties, demonstrating the largest hitherto reported spontaneous polarization for bulk polycrystals of small-molecule-based ferroelectrics. Owing to the ready availability of large-scale materials and processability into various bulk crystalline forms, this ferroelectric crystal represents a highly promising functional material that will boost research on diverse applications as bulk crystals.

Two-step thermotropic phase transition and dielectric relaxation in 1D supramolecular lead iodide perovskite [NH4@18-crown ether]PbI3

The supramolecular lead iodide perovskite crystals, {[NH₄(18-crown-6)]PbI₃}_∞ (1), (18-crown-6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane), was successfully achieved by a facile solvent evaporation strategy using a DMF solution containing equal molar quantities of PbI₂, NH₄I and 18-crown-6. The supramolecular perovskite was characterized by microanalysis for C, H and N elements, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. DSC measurements demonstrated that 1 experiences a two-step thermotropic phase transition around 333 K and 383 K, respectively. The phase transition is relevant to the disorder-order transformation of the 18-crown-6 molecule at ∼333 K, while both breaking-symmetry and ordered-disordered transformation of the 18-crown-6 molecule occurred at ∼383 K. In addition, the sharp change of the PbI₆ coordination octahedron distortion degree plays a synergistic role in the two-step phase transition. The dielectric relaxation occurs above 243 K in 1 and is mainly attributed to the displacement of the NH₄⁺ ions relative to the ring of the 18-crown-6 molecule and {PbI₃}_∞ chain induced by an AC electrical field.

Two Manganese(II)-Based Hybrid Multifunctional Phase Transition Materials with Strong Photoluminescence, High Quantum Yield, and Switchable Dielectric Properties: (C6NH16)2MnBr4 and (C7NH18)2MnBr4

Multifunctional materials have always been an attractive research area, but how to combine multiple excellent properties in one compound remains a considerable challenge. Organic-inorganic hybrid compounds are widely used in the design of such materials due to their rich properties and flexible assembly. Herein, two new manganese(II)-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, (C₆NH₁₆)₂MnBr₄ (1) and (C₇NH₁₈)₂MnBr₄ (2), are prepared by the solution method. Compounds 1 and 2 both emit extremely strong green light under UV excitation, with high quantum yields of 45.93 and 50.98%, respectively. In addition, reversible solid-state phase transitions and obvious switchable dielectric properties are shown at 378/366 and 361/352 K, respectively. The coexistence of the dual stimulus-response characteristics of temperature and light in compounds 1 and 2 opens a new path for exploring more multifunctional phase transition materials.

A lead bromide organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite material showing reversible dual phase transition and robust SHG switching

A one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite material [3.3.0-dabco]PbBr₃ (1) was synthesized by the reaction of 1,5-diazabicyclo[3.3.0]octane (3.3.0-dabco) with PbBr₂ in concentrated HBr aqueous solution. Differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric measurements, and variable-temperature structural analyses revealed that compound 1 exhibits two successive structural phase transitions from P2₁2₁2₁ to Pbcm at 387 K (T₁) and then to P6/mmc at 436 K (T₂), accompanied by two pairs of dielectric anomalies with a clear one at T₁ and an unobvious one at T₂. In addition, compound 1 shows a robust second harmonic generation (SHG) effect between SHG-OFF and SHG-ON states during its centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric symmetry breaking phase transition at T₁.

A series of dynamic single crystals of [MII(en)3]SO4 (M = Ni, Mn, and Cd) shows tunable dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion

A series of dynamic single crystals with a chemical formula of [M^II(en)₃]SO₄ (en = ethylene and M^II = Ni^II, Mn^II, and Cd^II) was synthesized. As the temperature decreases, these materials exhibit dielectric switching in the vicinity of the phase transition point accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansion in the cell parameters as a consequence of the order-disorder structural change of SO2-4 in a cavity surrounded by five [M^II(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. Because the variation of metal centers with different ionic radii changes the shape of the complex cation, which affects the distribution of hydrogen-bond interactions around the SO2-4, the dynamic motion of SO2-4 is substantially tuned. Correspondingly, the dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion of materials were largely shifted, especially in the single crystals of [Mn^II(en)₃]SO₄, whose structural change is distinctly different from the crystals of Ni(II) and Cd(II). The detailed structural mechanism accounting for the different physical properties of these materials was discussed.

Two-step nonlinear optical switch in a hydrogen-bonded perovskite-type crystal

Switchable nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have aroused broad interest on account of their captivating optical and electronic properties. We demonstrate a novel perovskite-type crystal with exceptional hydrogen bond interactions that are associated with the onset of reorientational motions of organic cations and thus induce the occurrence of two successive phase transitions to be a two-step NLO switch. This finding affords an alternative approach for the design and assembly of switchable NLO materials.

An Exceptional Thermally Induced Four-State Nonlinear Optical Switch Arising from Stepwise Molecular Dynamic Changes in a New Hybrid Salt

Switching materials in channels of nonlinear optics (NLOs) are of particular interest in NLO material science. Numerous crystalline NLO switches based on structural phase transition have emerged, but most of them reveal a single-step switch between two different second-harmonic-generation (SHG) states, and only very rare cases involve three or more SHG states. Herein, we report a new organic-inorganic hybrid salt, (Me₃ NNH₂ )₂ [CdI₄ ], which is an unprecedented case of a reversible three-step NLO switch between SHG-silent, -medium, -low, and -high states, with high contrasts of 25.5/4.3/9.2 in a temperature range of 213-303 K. By using the combined techniques of variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal structural analyses, dielectric constants, solid-state ¹³ C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Hirshfeld surface analyses, we disclose that this four-state switchable SHG behavior is highly associated with the stepwise-changed molecular dynamics of the polar organic cations. This finding demonstrates well the complexity of molecular dynamics in simple hybrid salts and their potential in designing new advanced multistep switching materials.

Competing hydrogen-bonding interactions in a high-Tc organic molecular-ionic crystal with evident nonlinear optical response

A polar oxyhalogen-vanadate compound (C5NH13Cl)2VOCl4 with optical and two-staged dielectric switch behavior

Polar organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been applied in ferroelectricity, as well as in devices based on nonlinear optical and piezoelectricity properties. Here, we used a rectangular pyramid structure of [VOCl4]2- to construct a polar compound (C5NH13Cl)2VOCl4 (1). Compound 1 crystallized in the monoclinic P21 space group. Coexistence of nonlinear optical switching behavior (space-group change from P21 to P21/n) and two-staged thermosensitive dielectric switching properties could be achieved under the stimulus of temperature. Our findings provide an effective approach for construction of polar materials.

A Promising Phase Change Material with Record High Ionic Conductivity over a Wide Temperature Range of a Plastic Crystal Phase and Magnetic Thermal Memory Effect

The emerging organic ion plastic crystals (OIPCs) are the most promising candidates used as solid-state electrolytes in a range of ionic devices. To endow an OIPC with additional functionality may create a new type of material for multifunctional devices. Herein, we present an ion plastic crystal, [EMIm][Ni(mnt)₂] (1; [EMIm]⁺ = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and mnt^2- = maleonitriledithiolate), and its crystal consists of twin dimeric chains of [Ni(mnt)₂]^- anions, embraced by [EMIm]⁺ cations. A crystal-to-plastic crystal transformation with a large latent heat that occurred at ∼367/337 K on heating/cooling is confirmed by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. The plastic crystal phase in 1, characterized by variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and optical microscopy images, spans a broad temperature range with ΔT ∼123/153 K on heating/cooling (DSC measurement), and the wide ΔT is relevant to an extra stable anion chain owing to the strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions protecting the chain from collapse in the plastic crystal state. 1 is a single-component ion plastic crystal with a record high ion conductivity, 0.21 S·cm^-1, at 453 K. The crystal-to-plastic crystal transformation in 1 is coupled to a bistable magnetic transition to give a multi-in-one multifunctional material. This study provides a creative thought for the design of OIPCs with striking thermal, electrical, and magnetic multifunctionality.

Coexistence of Magnetic-Optic-Electric Triple Switching and Thermal Energy Storage in a Multifunctional Plastic Crystal of Trimethylchloromethyl Ammonium Tetrachloroferrate(III)

Driven by the rapidly increasing demand for technological applications, multifunctional materials have been one important research area, which are expected to enhance the capacity and versatility of materials in various applications. Nevertheless, combining more than three functions in one molecular compound is still a challenge. Molecular solid-solid phase transition materials could exhibit switchable properties, which could have potential applications such as switches, sensors, and memory devices. However, these switchable molecular materials are rarely researched as thermal energy storage materials. In this work, we report the coexistence of thermal energy storage and magnetic-optic-electric triple switching in a plastic crystal, trimethylchloromethyl ammonium tetrachloroferrate(III), ([(CH₃)₃NCH₂Cl][FeCl₄], referred to as 1). 1 undergoes plastic phase transition at near room temperature (326 K) induced by the order-disorder of the ions. The magnetic-optic-electric triple switching in 1 could be triggered by temperature stimuli near room temperature. Meanwhile, with utilization of large latent heat during the phase transition process and sensible heat, the energy storage in 1 is up to 107 J g^-1 from 293 to 343 K, demonstrating its thermal energy storage application in solar energy systems and industrial sectors. This work particularly exhibits the advantages of plastic molecular materials as thermal energy storage materials and introduces the thermal energy storage into the multi-switchable plastic phase transition molecular materials, which will give extra flexibility for the design of new types of multifunctional materials.

Switchable Dielectric Phase Transition Triggered by Pendulum-Like Motion in an Ionic Co-crystal

Molecular-based ionic co-crystals, which have the merits of low-cost/easy fabrication processes and flexible structure and functionality, have already exhibited tremendous potential in molecular memory switches and other electric devices. However, dipole (ON/OFF switching) triggering is a huge challenge. Here, we introduce a pendulum-like dynamic strategy to induce the order-disorder transition of a co-crystal [C₅ H₇ N₃ Cl]₃ [Sb₂ Br₉ ] (compound 1). Here, the anion and cation act as a stator and a pendulum-like rotor (the source of the dielectric switch), respectively. The temperature-dependent dielectric and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses reveal that 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition, which stems from the order-disorder transition of the cations. The thermal ON/OFF switchable motions make 1 a promising candidate to promote the development of bulk crystals as artificial intelligent dielectric materials. In addition, the pendulum-like molecular dynamics and distinct arrangements of two coexisting ions with a notable offset effect promotes/hinders dipolar reorientation after dielectric transition and provides a rarely observed but fairly useful and feasible strategy for understanding and modulating the dipole motion in crystalline electrically polarizable materials.

Unusual high-temperature reversible phase transition containing dielectric and nonlinear optical switches in host-guest supramolecular crown ether clathrates

A novel high-temperature dielectric and quadratic nonlinear optical switching material, 3,4-difluoroanilinium 18-crown-6 perchlorate, was synthesized. It exhibits two successive structural phase transitions at 347 K and 240 K, respectively. Gradually increased SHG-active characteristics are also identified.

[C7H14NO][ClO4]: order–disorder structural change induced sudden switchable dielectric behaviour at room temperature

Static-to-dynamic transition in organic–inorganic hybrid [C₇H₁₄NO][ClO₄] exhibits switch-type characteristics during the dielectric transitions between high- and low-dielectric states.
