Electrochemical sensing mechanism of ammonium ions over an Ag/TiO2 composite electrode modified by hematite

Here, we demonstrate a new electrochemical sensing mechanism of ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) involving a two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and a hydrazine reaction. The NH₄⁺ are electrooxidized to hydrazine by H₂O₂ derived from the ORR over a self-supporting Ag/TiO₂ nanotube array composite electrode modified by hematite (Ag/Fe₂O₃/TNTs). The Ag/Fe₂O₃/TNT sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 1876 µA mM^-1 cm^-2 with a detection limit of 0.18 µM under non-alkaline conditions, a short response time of 3 s, good reproducibility, and fine selectivity among various interferents, and is also successfully used in real water bodies to display high accuracy. Furthermore, this new mechanism has a certain universality in a range of Ag (main catalyst)/transition metal oxide (cocatalyst)/TNT sensing systems. This work offers a new design basis for the urgently needed electrochemical ammonia nitrogen sensors.

Laser-Accelerated Mass Transport in Oxygen Reduction Via a Graphene-Supported Silver-Iron Oxide Heterojunction

Mass-transport acceleration is essential toward enhanced electrocatalytic performance yet rarely recognized under irradiation, because light is usually reported to improve charge transfer. We studied laser-enhanced mass transport through the heterojunction between Ag and semiconductor Fe₂O₃ situated on graphene for oxygen reduction reaction. Because of the decreased mass-transport resistance by 59% under 405 nm laser irradiation, the current density can be enhanced by 180%, which is also supported by a theoretical calculation. This laser-enhanced mass transport was attributed to local photothermal heating and the near-field local enhancement. Easier desorption of OH^- species occurring between the Fe and Ag centers under the laser accelerates the mass-transport centers.

Interfacial Engineering of Metal/Metal Oxide Heterojunctions toward Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Reactions

Oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are two very important electrochemical processes for renewable energy conversion and storage devices. Electrocatalysts are needed to accelerate their sluggish kinetics to improve energy conversion efficiencies. Hence, extensive efforts have been devoted to the development of OER and ORR electrocatalysts with high activity and stability as well as low cost. Among these developed electrocatalysts, metal/metal oxide heterostructures attract a great deal of research interest because their catalytic performances can be tuned by interface engineering. In this Review, the latest achievements in interface engineering of metal/metal oxides heterostructures toward ORR and OER are described. The effects of the metal/metal oxide interface on catalysis are first discussed. Then, the approaches for interface engineering are illustrated. The developments of interface engineering in OER and ORR catalysis as well as bifunctional electrocatalysis are further introduced. Lastly, a perspective for future development of interface engineering in metal/metal oxide for OER and ORR is discussed.

Morphological Control of Silicon Carbide Deposited on Hi-Nicalon Type S Fiber Using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Infiltration

Silicon carbide coated onto Hi-Nicalon Type S fiber is of great interest to the aerospace industry. This work focuses on tuning the reaction parameters of atmospheric pressure SiC CVI using CH₃SiCl₃ to control the morphology of the coatings produced. Depth of CH₃SiCl₃ from 1 to 14 cm, temperature from 1000 to 1100 °C, and flow rate of H₂ carrier gas from 5 to 30 SCCM were examined. Coating morphologies ranged from smooth to very nodular, where spherical growths were present along the entire deposition zone. The parameters that yielded a smooth deposition throughout the 20 cm deposition zone were 4-6 cm of CH₃SiCl_3(l) depth, 1100 °C, and 10 SCCM of H₂ as a carrier gas. Tensile testing using acoustic emission sensors was performed on SiC_f/BN/CVI-SiC minicomposites with different coating morphologies. The tensile tests revealed that smooth coatings have better mechanical performance than the nodular coatings; nodular coatings promote premature ultimate brittle failure, while smooth coatings exhibit toughening mechanisms. Smooth coatings had higher average matrix cracking strength (248 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (541 MPa) than average nodular coating matrix cracking strength (147 MPa) and ultimate strength (226 MPa).

3D ordered macro-/mesoporous carbon supported Ag nanoparticles for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction

Three-dimensionally ordered macro-/mesoporous carbon (OMMC)-supported Ag nanoparticles (Ag/OMMC) with homogeneously dispersed Ag particles are prepared and investigated as effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline aqueous system. The obtained Ag/OMMC catalyst displays smaller Ag particle size, higher Ag dispersion, and enhanced catalytic activity and durability compared with the carbon black Vulcan XC-72R supported Ag (Ag/XC-72R). The sizes of Ag particles supported on the OMMC and XC-72R are 4.3 and 6.5 nm, respectively. The prepared Ag/OMMC catalyst shows a positive half-wave potential of 0.79 V vs. RHE and a large diffusion-limited current of 5.6 mA cm^-2 at 0.4 V, superior to Ag/XC-72R catalyst. The better ORR performance of the Ag/OMMC is probably ascribed to the unique 3D ordered interconnected macro-/mesoporous structure, which contributes to facilitating the mass/charge transport, improving the Ag particle dispersion, and preventing the Ag particle growth and aggregation.

Binder-free graphene oxide doughs

Graphene oxide (GO) sheets have been used to construct various bulk forms of GO and graphene-based materials through solution-based processing techniques. Here, we report a highly cohesive dough state of GO with tens of weight percent loading in water without binder-like additives. The dough state can be diluted to obtain gels or dispersions, and dried to yield hard solids. It can be kneaded without leaving stains, readily reshaped, connected, and further processed to make bulk GO and graphene materials of arbitrary form factors and tunable microstructures. The doughs can be transformed to dense glassy solids of GO or graphene without long-range stacking order of the sheets, which exhibit isotropic and much enhanced mechanical properties due to hindered sliding between the sheets. GO dough is also found to be a good support material for electrocatalysts as it helps to form compliant interface to access the active particles.

Graphene oxide (GO) dispersions may be used as starting materials for graphene-based architectures. Here, a malleable and versatile dough state of GO is discovered, completing the GO–water continuum, which can be diluted or converted to glassy GO or graphene solids without long-range stacking order with enhanced mechanical and electrochemical properties

Electrochemical sensor based on a three dimensional nanostructured MoS2 nanosphere-PANI/reduced graphene oxide composite for simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid

A three dimensional (3D) nanostructured composite based on the self-assembly of MoS₂ nanospheres and polyaniline (PANI) loaded on reduced graphene oxide (denoted by 3D MoS₂-PANI/rGO) was prepared via a feasible one-pot hydrothermal process. The 3D MoS₂-PANI/rGO nanocomposite not only exhibits good functionality and bioaffinity but also displays high electrochemical catalytic activity. As such, the developed 3D MoS₂-PANI/rGO nanocomposite can be employed as the sensing platform for simultaneously detecting small biomolecules, i.e., ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA). The peak currents obtained from the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements depended linearly on the concentrations in the wide range from 50 μM to 8.0 mM, 5.0 to 500 μM, and 1.0 to 500 μM, giving low detection limits of 22.20, 0.70, and 0.36 μM for AA, DA, and UA, respectively. Furthermore, the 3D MoS₂-PANI/rGO-based electrochemical sensor also exhibited high selectivity, good reproducibility and stability toward small molecule detection. The present sensing strategy based on 3D MoS₂-PANI/rGO suggests a good reliability in the trace determination of electroactive biomolecules.
