Hybrid Nanostructure Catalyst with Low Loading of Pt for the High-Efficiency Catalytic Hydrogenation of Chloronitrobenzene

Fabrication of low-loading, noble-metal, stable, and high-performance metal catalysts remains a thorny issue. Herein, we demonstrate the successful formation of a hybrid nanostructure Pt/TiO₂/SBA-15 catalyst (denoted as HNSC-P/T/S; Pt, 0.09%; TiO₂, 10%) with satisfactory activity in the hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB). The HNSC-P/T/S showed >99% conversion and a high selectivity of >98%, and the turnover frequency number (TOF) reached 66 766 h^-1, which was impossible to achieve with Pt/TiO₂ (denoted as P/T) or Pt/SBA-15 (denoted as P/S). The success of the catalytic activity of the HNSC-P/T/S mainly relies on its synergistic effect and special structure, which can fully develop the catalytic ability of Pt, thereby reducing the Pt loading in the noble-based catalyst. Furthermore, the HNSC-P/T/S could also achieve an excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of other nitroarenes. Hence, this work proposes a direction to prepare a noble-based catalyst with a low loading of noble metals for diverse applications.

Hierarchical mesoporous zinc-imidazole dicarboxylic acid MOFs: Surfactant-directed synthesis, pH-responsive degradation, and drug delivery

The surfactant template-directed solvothermal method was applied in the synthesis of hierarchical mesoporous zinc-imidazolate derivative metal-organic framework (mesoMOF), which was then utilized for active loading of cisplatin (cis-Pt). To fabricate mesoMOF, various amounts of the surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide: 0.1-0.3 g) and linker (citric acid: 0.05-0.15 g) were added to the reaction mixture, which resulted in different particle sizes and morphologies. MesoMOF quality attributes such as Specific surface area (SSA), total porous volume, and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore diameter were also determined. At the optimum reaction condition, mesoMOF with a high surface area (1859 m²/g), pore diameter (14.13 nm) and total pore volume (0.314 cm³/g) was attained. In the next step, cis-Pt was actively loaded in the mesoMOF with a high loading capacity (28% w/w), which was remarkably superior to the microporous MOF. Interestingly, in mildly acidic pH (5.5), mesoMOF underwent degradation, resulting in a rapid release of cis-Pt. Cell viability and apoptosis induction assays confirmed the superiority of the cis-Pt loaded mesoMOF over free drug in a resistant ovarian tumor cell line (A2780cp). Altogether, due to their tunable size and morphology, pH-responsiveness, and acceptable tolerability in mice, the mesoMOFs can be regarded as an anti-cancer drug delivery system.

Encapsulating polyaniline within porous MIL-101 for high-performance corrosion protection

The metal corrosion possesses a serious threat to the safety and loss of property. The anticorrosion study on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remains rarely reported. Therefore, it is desirable to build MOFs-based anticorrosion coating with long-term corrosion resistance. Herein, we prepared a novel MOF-polymer anticorrosion composite PANI@MIL-101 by encapsulating polyaniline (PANI) within the pores of MIL-101 with in-situ polymerization of aniline monomer. The N₂ adsorption-desorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of PANI@MIL-101 illustrate that PANI is successfully encapsulated in the pores of MIL-101 with in-situ polymerization. PANI@MIL-101 was dispersed in epoxy resin (EP) to prepare anti-corrosive coatings. The Tafel potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that PANI@MIL-101/EP coating system has superior corrosion protection with the lowest i_corr value and the highest |Z|_0.01 value compared with MIL-101/EP coating, PANI/EP coating and EP coating. A possible anticorrosion mechanism of PANI@MIL-101 was discussed. This work reveals that MOF-polymer composite materials are superb candidates for high-performance corrosion protection.

Highly Dispersed Pt Nanoparticles on N-Doped Ordered Mesoporous Carbon as Effective Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

Highly-dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-modified CMK-3 mesoporous carbon (Pt/N-CMK-3) were first fabricated by a two-step impregnation route. The influences of N content on the catalyst porous structure, Pt nanoparticle size, surface properties, and interaction between Pt species and the support were investigated in detail using N2 sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The N species acted as anchoring sites for the stabilization of Pt particles. Benefiting from the formation of ultrafine metal nanoparticles, the Pt/N-CMK-3 exhibited excellent catalytic activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of nitro aromatics to the corresponding anilines with hydrogen. The Pt/N-CMK-3 catalyst could be reused eight times and keep its catalytic performance.
