Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers: structures, synthesis, and applications

Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers (CBPPs) are a special class of macrocycle-based polymers in which multiple pillararene monomers are attached to the polymer structures by covalent bonds. Owing to the unique molecular structures including the connection components or the spatial structures, CBPPs have become increasingly popular in applications ranging from environmental science to biomedical science. In this review, CBPPs are divided into three types (linear polymers, grafted polymers, and cross-linked polymers) according to their structural characteristics and described from the perspective of synthesis methods comprehensively. In addition, the applications of CBPPs are presented, including selective adsorption and separation, fluorescence sensing and detection, construction of supramolecular gels, anticancer drug delivery, artificial light-harvesting, catalysis, and others. Finally, the current challenging issues and comprehensive prospects of CBPPs are discussed.

Deciphering the Dynamics of Organic Nanoaggregates with AIEE Effect and Excited States: Lipophilic Benzothiadiazole Derivatives as Selective Cell Imaging Probes

An aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect in fluorescent lipophilic 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) derivatives and their organic nanoaggregates were studied. A set of techniques such as single-crystal X-ray, dynamic light scattering (DLS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), UV-vis, fluorescence, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to decipher the formation/break (kinetics), properties, and dynamics of the organic nanoaggregates of three BTD small organic molecules. An in-depth study of the excited-state also revealed the preferential relaxation emissive pathways for the BTD derivatives and the dynamics associated with it. The results described herein, for the first time, explain the formation of fluorescent BTD nanoaggregate derivatives and allow for the understanding of their dynamics in solution as well as the ruling forces of both aggregation and break processes along with the involved equilibrium. One of the developed dyes could be used at a nanomolar concentration to selectively stain lipid droplets emitting an intense and bright fluorescence at the red channel. The other two BTDs could also stain lipid droplets at very low concentrations and were visualized preferentially at the blue channel.

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene-based multi-stimuli responsive supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel for effective adsorption of rhodamine B

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene was designed and synthesized by the reaction of aldehyde functionalized-pillar[5]arene and hydrazine. Then, a novel bispillar[5]arene-based supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane has been successfully prepared via host-guest interaction. Interestingly, by taking advantage of the host-guest interactions, π-π stacking interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions, the multi-stimuli-responsive gel-sol phase transitions of such a supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel were successfully realized under different stimuli, such as acid, temperature, concentration, and competitive guests. Moreover, this supramolecular system could effectively adsorb dye molecule rhodamine B. It is worth noting that this supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in cyclohexanol solution (BP5·G·C) could be used as an adsorbent material for adsorbing rhodamine B with adsorption efficiency of 98.4%. Meanwhile, the adsorption efficiency was 97.6% for supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in DMSO-H2O (v : v, 8 : 2) binary solution (BP5·G·D), also indicating the superior adsorption effect of BP5·G·D toward the dye molecule rhodamine B.

A novel bis-component AIE-gel TG was facilely constructed from two "easy-to-synthesize" tripodal gelators by a simple host-guest self-assembly process. Interestingly, the TG shows strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and could be used for highly efficient and sensitive detection and separation of ions (CN^-, Fe³⁺ and H₂PO₄^-). The LODs (limits of lowest detection) of TG for CN^-, Fe³⁺ and H₂PO₄^- are in the range of 4.93 × 10^-9-7.80 × 10^-8 M. Meanwhile, the xerogel of TG could adsorb and separate Fe³⁺ from aqueous solutions, and the adsorption rate is 96%. In addition, a thin film based on the TG could act as a convenient test kit for the detection of CN^- and Fe³⁺. What is more, the TG-Fe film could not only be used as an erasable secure fluorescent display material, but also as a convenient reversible H₂PO₄^- test kit.

A novel approach for the ultrasensitive detection and separation of F⁻ has been developed. F⁻ could induce a tripodal naphthalimide sensor (TNA) to carry out reversible supramolecular polymerization and lead to strong AIEE.

Supramolecular delivery systems based on pillararenes

Supramolecular delivery systems (SDSs) fabricated via molecular assembly, which conveniently allow integration of multiple functions in a single system and structural diversity of systems, are a very active research area due to their enormous potential in biomedical applications, including drug delivery, cell imaging, diagnosis, and release monitoring. Pillararenes, a novel type of macrocyclic molecule, are gaining increasing interest as an important component in the construction of SDSs due to their unique structural and chemical properties. This feature article summarizes pillararene-based SDSs constructed via host-guest interactions via four strategies: (1) supramolecular host-guest complexation; (2) self-assembly of supramolecular amphiphiles; (3) self-assembly of amphiphilic supramolecular polymer conjugates; (4) hybridization with other porous materials, such as inorganic materials and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The various SDSs based on pillararenes for the delivery of different cargoes from anti-cancer drugs, fluorescent molecules, siRNAs, and insulin to antibiotics are reviewed. Furthermore, future challenges for advanced SDSs based on pillararenes and their broader applications are outlined.

Multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular gel constructed by pillar[5]arene-based pseudorotaxanes for efficient detection and separation of multi-analytes in aqueous solution

Here, a novel pseudorotaxanes-type crosslinker of a supramolecular polymer network (WP5-PN) has been constructed from a host water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5) and a guest naphthalene dimethylamine derivative (PN) via a stepwise process involving multiple non-covalent interactions. The obtained supramolecular polymers were able to transform into a supramolecular polymer gel (WP5-PN-G) and show AIE properties in DMSO-H2O binary solution. Interestingly, due to the dynamic and reversible nature of non-covalent interactions, the resultant supramolecular polymer gels exhibited external stimuli-responsiveness to different parameters, such as temperature, acid-base, competitive guest and mechanical stress. Moreover, WP5-PN-G showed fluorescent response for Fe3+ and Cu2+, while its xerogel showed excellent recyclable separation properties for these metal ions with adsorption rates up to 98.07% and 95.38%, respectively. Moreover, by rational introduction of these metal ions into the WP5-PN-G, corresponding metal ion coordinated metallogels, such as WP5-PN-FeG and WP5-PN-CuG were obtained. These metallogels could selectively and sensitively sense F- and CN-, respectively. The detection limits of these metallogels for F- and CN- were about 1 × 10-8 M. The WP5-PN-G has potential applications in multi-analytes detection and separation as well as fluorescent display materials.
