A Pd-catalyzed route to carborane-fused boron heterocycles

Due to the expanding applications of icosahedral carboranes in medicinal and materials chemistry research, their functionalizations have become one of the central themes in boron-rich cluster chemistry. Although several strategies for incorporating nitrogen-containing nucleophiles on a single boron vertex of the icosahedral carboranes (C2B10H12) have been developed, methods for preparing clusters with vicinal B-N moieties are still lacking. The steric bulk of icosahedral carboranes and disparate electronic and steric nature of the N-containing groups have rendered the vicinal diamination challenging. In this article, we show how a developed Pd-catalyzed process is used to incorporate an array of NH-heterocycles, anilines, and heteroanilines with various electronic and steric profiles onto the vicinal boron vertices of a meta-carborane cluster via sequential or one-pot fashion. Importantly, oxidative cyclizations of the cross-coupling products with indoles and pyrroles appended to boron vertices generate a previously unknown class of all-boron-vertex bound carborane-fused six- and seven-membered ring heterocycles. Photophysical studies of the meta-carborane-fused heterocycles show that these structures can exhibit luminescence with high quantum yields and are amenable to further manipulations.

Recent Advances of Green Catalytic System I2/DMSO in C–C and C–Heteroatom Bonds Formation

Developing a green, practical and efficient method for the formation of C–C and C–Heteroatom bonds is an important topic in modern organic synthetic chemistry. In recent years, the I2/DMSO catalytic system has attracted wide attention because of its green, high efficiency, atomic economy, low cost, mild reaction conditions and it is environment-friendly, which is more in line with the requirements of sustainable chemistry. Heteroatom-containing compounds have shown lots of important applications in pharmaceutical synthesis, agrochemicals, material chemistry and organic dyes. At present, the I2/DMSO catalytic system has been successfully applied to the synthesis of various heteroatom-containing compounds. The C–C and C–Heteroatom bonds have been formed efficiently, which has been proved to be a green and mild catalytic system. In this review, the research achievements of the I2/DMSO catalytic system in the formation of C–C and C–Heteroatom bonds from 2015 to date are described, and the research area is prospected. This review attempts to reveal the general law of iodine catalysis and lay a foundation for the design of new reactions.

A Tandem Dehydrogenation-Driven Cross-Coupling between Cyclohexanones and Primary Amines for Construction of Benzoxazoles

Herein, we report a transition metal-free, operationally simple, general method for straightforward syntheses of 2-substituted benzoxazoles from readily available cyclohexanones and aliphatic primary amines by an imine α-oxygenation-initiated cascade reaction sequence. The key to achieving high selectivity and excellent functional-group tolerance is the use of TEMPO as a mild oxidant that selectively oxidizes the reaction intermediates through its multiple reactivity modes, thus facilitating the individual steps to proceed in succession. More than 70 substrate combinations are disclosed, demonstrating the reliability of this protocol to synthesize structurally diverse products, including marketed drugs, drug candidate, and natural products that are unattainable by the existing methods.

Site-Selective Synthesis of Aryl Sulfides via Oxidative Aromatization of Cyclohexanones with Thiophenols

We have introduced a metal-free facile access for the thiolation/aromatization of cyclohexanones with thiophenols to the corresponding aryl sulfides. The dehydroaromatic reaction of non-aromatic cyclohexanones proceeded smoothly using oxygen as a green oxidant.

Recent advances in the transition metal-free oxidative dehydrogenative aromatization of cyclohexanones

Cyclohexanone is a simple and widely available raw material that can be obtained from lignin biomass, highlighting its renewable and sustainable features. Cyclohexanone, as an important synthon in organic chemistry, has been demonstrated to be viable for constructing functionalized arenes and benzoheteroarenes, with recent extensive development on transition metal-free oxidative dehydrogenative aromatization. This review focuses on recent research progress on the transition metal-free derivation of cyclohexanones via oxidative dehydrogenative aromatization.

In the title compound, C40H36B2N4O5, the B—O—B bond angle is 132.75 (13) and the dihedral angle between the benzodiazborole rings is 73.02 (5)°. In the crystal, weak C—H...O interactions link the molecules.

Arylation of indoles using cyclohexanones dually-catalyzed by niobic acid and palladium-on-carbons

3-Arylindoles were easily constructed from indoles and cyclohexanone derivatives using a combination of catalytic niobic acid-on-carbon (Nb₂O₅/C) and palladium-on-carbon (Pd/C) under heating conditions without any oxidants. The Lewis acidic Nb₂O₅/C promoted the nucleophilic addition of indoles to the cyclohexanones, and the subsequent dehydration and Pd/C-catalyzed dehydrogenation produced the 3-arylindoles. The additive 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene worked as a hydrogen acceptor to facilitate the dehydrogenation step.

I2-DMSO-H2O: A Metal-Free Combination System for the Oxidative Addition of Alkynes to Access (E)-α-Iodo-β-methylsulfonylalkenes

A simple and green reaction was discovered for iodization-methylsulfoxidation of alkynes to access (E)-α-iodo-β-methylsulfonylalkenes. This is the first report for the synthesis of iodovinyl methylsulfones by employing alkynes to react with molecular iodine (I₂), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and H₂O. Additionally, this protocol represents a new avenue for utilizing DMSO as the source of the -SO₂Me group and H₂O as the "O" source for the construction of the -SO₂Me group from DMSO, which is a valuable finding.

Direct Synthesis of Diphenylamines from Phenols and Ammonium Formate Catalyzed by Palladium

Arylamines are commercially and synthetically useful compounds with a wide variety of applications. Their preparation has been traditionally achieved using metal-catalyzed C-N coupling reactions with aryl halides. In this work, 17 different diarylamines are prepared from phenols by using ammonium formate as the aminating reagent. Phenolic compounds are more desirable feedstocks, owing to their availability from lignin, making them valuable biorenewable alternatives to aryl halides. Ammonium formate is found to be a convenient surrogate for ammonia and a useful aminating reagent for phenols. Diarylamine products are obtained in good to excellent yields while only water and CO₂ are generated as byproducts of the transformation.
