Abstract
DFT calculations have been performed to find the mechanism of the alkyloxycarbonylation of an internal alkene with HCOOH catalyzed by a palladium complex with P,N hemilabile ligands. Four different cycles have been explored in detail, and a plausible catalytic cycle involves the decomposition of HCOOH/HCOOMe to CO, internal alkene isomerization, terminal alkene insertion, CO migratory insertion and methanolysis. It is shown that decomposition and isomerization processes involve a cooperative P,N hemilabile ligand and Pd(0) (NH-Pd) rather than the Pd(II) hydride (Pd-H) mechanism. Intriguingly, the simultaneous presence of PTSA acts as a hydrogen shuttle (H-shuttle), assisting CO generation and methanolysis. With such a mechanism, the rate-determining transition state corresponds to internal alkene isomerization, which is consistent with the experimental observation that isomerization was the slow step in this process. The back-bonding between palladium and olefin and rapid hydrogen transfer in the presence of a PTSA H-shuttle are responsible for the moderate barriers. In addition, a careful study of the solvent effect indicates that polar solvents, which are capable of hydrogen bonding, can promote the catalytic reactions. Mechanistic insights gained by this theoretical study have not only rationalized the experimental observations well but also have implications for new reaction development.

Abstract
We describe the carbonylation of a series of mono and dihydroxy derivatives of polyfluorinated alkylbenzenes and benzocycloalkenes with OH groups at benzylic positions using carbon monoxide in the presence of a superacid (TfOH, a TfOH-SbF5 mixture, or a FSO3H-SbF5 mixture). It was shown that the superacid-catalyzed addition of CO to various primary and secondary polyfluorinated alcohols and diols gives the corresponding mono- and dicarboxylic acids or lactones. The efficiency of various superacids depending on alcohol structure was evaluated, and FSO3H-SbF5 yielded the best results in most transformations. The addition of CO to secondary 1-arylalkan-1-ols containing vicinal fluorine atoms was found to be accompanied by elimination of HF with the formation of α,β-unsaturated aryl-carboxylic acids. In contrast to primary and secondary alcohols, conversion of tertiary perfluoro-1,1-diarylalkan-1-ols into carbonylation products is not complete, and the resulting carboxylic acids are easily decarboxylated after water treatment of the reaction mixture.

Abstract
The Lucite Alpha process is the predominant technology for the preparation of acrylics. This two-stage process involves the palladium-catalysed formation of methyl propanoate from ethene, CO, and methanol, followed by the oxidative formylation of methyl propanoate into methyl methacrylate. A range of bis-1,2-disubstituted aminomethylferrocenes has been prepared and characterised. These complexes serve as precursors to a variety of bulky ferrocenylmethyldiphosphanes that, in turn, function as ligands in the palladium-catalysed process. We describe the crystal structures of five ligand precursors and provide a rationale for their design. In situ catalyst testing on palladium complexes derived from ferrocenylphosphanes demonstrates that these are highly selective (>99.5%) catalysts for the formation of methyl propanoate from ethene, CO, and methanol and have turnover numbers exceeding 50,000. This article credits those researchers who worked on this project in the early days, who received little or no credit for their achievements and endeavours.

Abstract
For the first time, the monoalkoxycarbonylation of easily available 1,3-diynes to give synthetically useful conjugated enynes has been realized. Key to success was the design and utilization of the new ligand 2,2'-bis(tert-butyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphanyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene (Neolephos), which permits the palladium-catalyzed selective carbonylation under mild conditions, providing a general preparation of functionalized 1,3-enynes in good-to-high yields with excellent chemoselectivities. Synthetic applications that showcase the possibilities of this novel methodology include an efficient one-pot synthesis of 4-aryl-4H-pyrans as well as the rapid construction of various heterocyclic, bicyclic, and polycyclic compounds.
