Abstract
The first diastereodivergent propargylic alkylation reaction is developed. This Cu(I)-catalyzed formal decarboxylative [4+2] cycloaddition between ethynyl benzoxazinanone and vinylogous aza-enamine delivers each diastereomer of tetrahydroquinoline derivatives, bearing 1,3-stereocenters, using either i-Pr-Pybox or BINAP as the ligand under otherwise identical reaction conditions. This is the first application of vinylogous aza-enamines in a transition metal-catalyzed transformation and the first example of the creation of 1,3-stereocenters in a propargylic substitution reaction.

Abstract
α-Keto hydrazones and α,β-unsaturated γ-keto hydrazones are suitable pro-nucleophiles for asymmetric cross-aldol reactions with trifluoromethyl ketones via aza-di(tri)enamine-type intermediates. A quinidine-derived primary amine catalyst affords tertiary trifluoromethylated alcohols in good-to-excellent yields and high enantioselectivities. Subsequent transformations of hydrazono moieties yield appealing fluorinated carboxylic acids, 1,4-dicarbonyls and γ-keto acids.

Abstract
A chiral 2,2'-bipyridine ligand (1) bearing α,α'-trifluoromethyl-alcohols at 6,6'-positions was designed in five steps affording either the R,R or S,S enantiomer with excellent stereoselectivities, i.e. 97% de, >99% ee and >99.5% de, >99.5% ee, respectively. The key step for reaching high levels of stereoselectivity was demonstrated to be the resolution of the α-CF3-alcohol using (S)-ibuprofen as the resolving agent. An initial application for the 2,2'-bipyridine-α,α'-CF3-diol ligand was highlighted in the ZnII-catalyzed asymmetric ethylation reaction of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic aldehydes. Synergistic electron deficiency and steric hindrance properties of the newly developed ligand afforded the corresponding alcohols in good to excellent yields (up to 99%) and enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee). As observed from single crystal diffraction analysis, the complexation of the 2,2'-bipyridine-α,α'-CF3-diol ligand generates an unusual hexacoordinated ZnII.

Abstract
A new asymmetric activation strategy for hydrazones as acyl anion equivalents is developed in the bimetallic catalyzed carbonyl-ene reaction of isatins and hydrazones. Under mild conditions, optically active functionalized 3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles were furnished in up to 98% yield with up to 97% enantioselectivity. In this process, formaldehyde tert-butylhydrazone which is seldom employed in asymmetric carbonyl-ene reactions accelerated by a metallic catalyst can be activated well by a Brønsted base. A possible catalytic cycle is proposed.

Abstract
An unprecedented strain-driven dyotropic rearrangement of α-methylene-β-lactones has been realized, which enables the efficient access of a wide range of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones displaying remarkable structural diversity. Several appealing features of the reaction, including excellent efficiency, high stereospecificity, predictable chemoselectivity and broad substrate scope, render it a powerful tool for the synthesis of MBL-containing molecules of either natural or synthetic origin. Both experimental and computational evidences suggest that the new variant of dyotropic rearrangements proceed in a dualistic pattern: while an asynchronous concerted mechanism most likely accounts for the reactions featuring hydrogen migration, a stepwise process involving a phenonium ion intermediate is favored in the cases of aryl migration. The great synthetic potential of the title reaction is exemplified by its application to the efficient construction of several natural products and relevant scaffolds.

Abstract
A Brønsted acid-mediated synthesis of pyrazoles from conjugated hydrazones through a β-protonation/nucleophilic addition/cyclization/aromatization sequence was developed. This protocol utilizing the ambiphilic reactivity of hydrazones enables not only self-condensation but also cross-condensation, affording multisubstituted pyrazoles in high yields, with a broad substrate scope. This sequential reaction proceeds under mild conditions via a simple operation. Moreover, the method can be applied to the synthesis of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Lonazolac.

Abstract
A number of nitrile-containing chiral molecules were synthesized via asymmetric nucleophilic addition of formaldehyde N,N-dialkylhydrazone as the nitrile equivalent. Chiral N,N'-dioxide/metal salt complexes enabled the asymmetric addition reactions to both isatin-derived imines and α,β-unsaturated ketones, generating amino nitriles and 4-oxobutanenitrile derivatives in good yields with high enantioselectivities. This protocol was highlighted by avoiding the use of toxic nitrile reagents, wide substrate scope, and versatile transformations of chiral hydrazone adducts into other valuable molecules.

A highly efficient asymmetric imino-ene reaction of cyclic ketimines with silyl enol ethers was developed. Various chiral benzosultam derivatives were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%), enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee), and diastereoselectivities (up to >19:1 dr) by utilizing a Ni(BF4)2·6H2O/N,N'-dioxide complex as the catalyst. A possible transition state model was proposed to explain the stereoinduction. Furthermore, the synthetic utility of the protocol provided quick access to optically pure HIV-1 inhibitor.

Abstract
The highly efficient addition of phosphorus and carbon pronucleophiles to α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones (tulipalin A and arglabin) under n-Bu3P catalysis is reported. Kinetic experiments indicate that the unprecedentedly high reactivity of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones results from the rigid s-cis geometry of the 1-oxa-1,3-butadiene moiety that favors generation of zwitterionic intermediate stabilized by interaction between the phosphonium center and adjacent carbonyl oxygen. The presented strategy offers an economical and practical method for functionalization of natural biologically active α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones with high levels of chemo- and stereoselectivity.
