Chiral Ligand-Concentration Mediating Asymmetric Transformations of Silver Nanoclusters: NIR-II Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence Lighting

Near infrared (NIR) emitter with circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP), known as NIR CPP, has emerged as a key part in the research of cutting-edge luminescent materials. However, it remains a challenge to obtain nanoclusters with NIR CPP activity. Here, we propose an asymmetric transformation approach to efficiently synthesize two pairs of chiral silver nanoclusters (R/S-Ag29 and R/S-Ag16) using an achiral Ag10 nanocluster as starting material in the presence of different concentration chiral inducer (R/S)-1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogenphosphate (R/S-BNP). R/S-Ag29, formed in the low-concentration R/S-BNP, exhibits a unique kernel-shell structure consisting of a distorted Ag13 icosahedron and an integrated cage-like organometallic shell with a C3 symmetry, and possesses a superatomic 6-electron configuration (1S2|1P4). By contrast, R/S-Ag16, formed in the high-concentration R/S-BNP, features a sandwich-like pentagram with AgI-pure kernel. Profiting from the hierarchically chiral structures and superatomic kernel-dominated phosphorescence, R/S-Ag29 exhibits infrequent CPP activity in the second near-infrared (975 nm) region, being the first instance of NIR-II CPP observed among CPL-active metal nanoclusters. This study presents a new approach to reduce the difficulty of de novo synthesis for chiral silver nanomaterials, and facilitates the design of CPP-active superatomic nanoclusters in NIR region.

Anion-templated silver nanoclusters: precise synthesis and geometric structure

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are gaining much attention in nanoscale materials research because they exhibit size-specific physicochemical properties that are not observed in the corresponding bulk metals. Among them, silver (Ag) NCs can be precisely synthesized not only as pure Ag NCs but also as anion-templated Ag NCs. For anion-templated Ag NCs, we can expect the following capabilities: 1) size and shape control by regulating the central anion (anion template); 2) stabilization by adjusting the charge interaction between the central anion and surrounding Ag atoms; and 3) functionalization by selecting the type of central anion. In this review, we summarize the synthesis methods and influences of the central anion on the geometric structure of anion-templated Ag NCs, which include halide ions, chalcogenide ions, oxoanions, polyoxometalate, or hydride/deuteride as the central anion. This summary provides a reference for the current state of anion-templated Ag NCs, which may promote the development of anion-templated Ag NCs with novel geometric structures and physicochemical properties.

A classical [V10O28]6- anion templated high-nuclearity silver thiolate cluster

Polyoxovanadates (POVs) as templates are still scarcely observed in silver clusters. Herein, the largest known POV-based silver cluster (Ag50) was synthesized, which is a core-shell conformation composed of the in situ generated classical [V₁₀O₂₈]^6- core and Ag₅₀ shell, constrained by the S- and O-donor ligands with a specific distribution. Such {V₁₀O₂₈@Ag₅₀} structure displays geometric inheritance from the D_2h symmetric decavanadate to the silver skeleton. The solution behavior, solid-state stability and photoelectric properties are discussed in detail. This work provides enlightenment for the further construction of POV-templated high-nuclearity silver clusters.

Structural Diversity of Silver Fluorinated β-Diketonates: Effect of the Terminal Substituent and Solvent

In order to demonstrate the role of the fluorination and some solvents in the structural organization of the Ag(I) coordination polymers with β-diketonate ligands (R1C(O)CαHC(O)R2)- we synthesized a series of the compounds containing tfac- (R1 = CH3, R2 = CF3) and pfpac- (R1 = CH3, R2 = C2F5) anions. Solvent-free [Ag(L)]∞ (L = tfac 1, pfpac 2) compounds and the corresponding acetonitrile and toluene adducts have been characterized by elemental analysis and/or NMR, IR and single-crystal XRD. This series includes five new coordination polymers. Compound 1 is a 3D coordination framework based on Ag-Ochelate/bridge, Ag-Cα bonds, and argentophilic interactions. An increase in the fluorinated group leads to a chain coordination polymer 2 of an unusual structural organization. These chains can be represented as a "DNA-type", where two intertwined helices based on Ag-Ochelate and Ag-Cα bonds are connected through Ag-Obridge ones. Two structural types of chain coordination polymers, [Ag(tfac)(CH3CN)] and [Ag2(L)2(solvent)], have been revealed for the adducts. The latter structural type differs significantly from the previously studied toluene and acetonitrile adducts of fluorinated Ag(I) β-diketonates of the same stoichiometry. Thermal analysis in helium showed that both 1 and 2 decompose to metallic silver with the compound of pfpac-ligand being slightly more stable.

Structural Chemistry of Giant Metal Based Supramolecules

The review presents a bird-eye view on the state of research in the field of giant nonbiological discrete metal complexes and ions of nanometer size, which are structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, using the crystal structure as a common key feature. The discussion is focused on the main structural features of the metal clusters, the clusters containing compact metal oxide/hydroxide/chalcogenide core, ligand-based metal-organic cages, and supramolecules as well as on the aspects related to the packing of the molecules or ions in the crystal and the methodological aspects of the single-crystal neutron and X-ray diffraction of these compounds.

Construction of Silver Clusters Capped by Zwitterionic Ethynide Ligands

A zwitterionic ligand 3-(triethylammonio)propyne (TAP) has been employed to construct nine silver ethynide compounds for the first time. Single-crystal X-ray analyses reveal that compounds 1 and 2 are silver ethynide assemblies based on the Ag₃ subunits and clusters 3-8 are small discrete clusters of Ag₃, Ag₆, Ag₈, and Ag₁₂, respectively, ligated by the bulky TAP ligand with different auxiliary ligands. In addition, upon acquiring the tripod-like ^tBuPO₃^2-, a unprecedented 80 nuclei silver ethynide cluster was isolated and determined to be [(CF₃CO₂)₅@Ag₈₀(TAP)₁₄(^tBuPO₃)₁₆(CF₃CO₂)₂₄]¹⁹⁺ by crystallography and thermogravimetric analysis. The C₁ symmetry of Ag₈₀ was deconstructed to be two [Ag₄₀(TAP)₇(^tBuPO₃)₈(CF₃CO₂)₁₂]¹²⁺ secondary building subunits arranged in a cross way, with five CF₃CO₂^- trapped in the center. These results highlight that the elaborate selection of ethynide ligands is of great importance in the synthesis of novel silver ethynide clusters.
