Orientation of carbonyl groups in inclusion crystals formed from ketones with aromatic diimide-based macrocycles

Inclusion crystals were formed from ketones with aromatic diimide-based macrocycles possessing adamantane units, where the oxygen atoms of guests interacted with the electron-deficient π-surfaces of the aromatic diimides through CO⋯π contacts.

Molecular duplexes featuring NH···N, CH···O and CH···π interactions in solid-state self-assembly of triazine-based compounds

Synthetic supramolecular structures constructed through the cooperative action of numerous non-covalent forces are highly desirable as models to unravel and understand the complexity of systems created in nature via self-assembly. Taking advantage of the low cost of 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (cyanuric chloride) and the sequential nucleophilic substitution reactions with almost all types of nucleophiles, a series of six structurally related novel s-triazine derivatives 1-6 were synthesized and structurally characterized based on their physical, spectral and crystallographic data. The solid-state structures of all the six compounds showed intriguing and unique molecular duplexes featuring NH···N, CH···O and CH···π interactions. Careful analysis of different geometric parameters of the involved H-bonds indicates that they are linear, significant and are therefore responsible for guiding the three-dimensional structure of these compounds in the solid state. The prevalence of sextuple hydrogen bond array-driven molecular duplexes and the possibility of structural modifications on the s-triazine ring render these novel triazine derivatives 1-6 attractive as a platform to create heteroduplex constructs and their subsequent utility in the field of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering.

Phenoxy pendant isatins as potent α-glucosidase inhibitors: reciprocal carbonyl⋯carbonyl interactions, antiparallel π⋯π stacking driven solid state self-assembly and biological evaluation

Carbonyl-carbonyl (CO⋯CO) interactions are recently explored noncovalent interactions of significant interest owing to their role in the stability of biomacromolecules. Currently, substantial efforts are being made to understand the nature of these interactions. In this study, twelve phenoxy pendant isatins 1-12 have been evaluated for their α-glucosidase inhibitory potential in addition to the analysis of X-ray single crystals of 4 and 9. Both compounds 4 and 9 showed intriguing and unique self-assembled structures. The CO⋯CO and antiparallel displaced π⋯π stacking interactions are mainly involved in the formation of 1D-stair like supramolecular chains of 4 whereas antiparallel π⋯π stacking interactions drive the formation of 1D-columnar stacks of 9. These compounds not only highlight the potential of the isatin moiety in forming strong CO⋯CO and antiparallel π⋯π stacking interactions but also are interesting models to provide considerable insight into the nature of these interactions. The in vitro biological studies revealed that all twelve phenoxy pendant isatins 1-12 are highly potent inhibitors of α-glucosidase enzyme with IC50 values ranging from 5.32 ± 0.17 to 150.13 ± 0.62 μM, showing many fold more potent activity than the standard drug, acarbose (IC50 = 873.34 ± 1.67). Easy access and high α-glucosidase inhibition potential of these phenoxy pendant isatins 1-12 provide an attractive platform for finding more effective medication for controlling postprandial hyperglycemia.

Synthesis, solid state self-assembly driven by antiparallel π⋯π stacking and {⋯H-C-C-F}2 dimer synthons, and in vitro acetyl cholinesterase inhibition activity of phenoxy pendant isatins

A series of novel phenoxy pendant isatins PI1-12 have been synthesized in excellent yields by a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction involving isatins and 1-(2-bromoethoxy)-4-substituted benzenes, and characterized by their FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and GC-MS data, and in the case of PI4 by its single crystal X-ray analysis. The solid-state structure of PI4 showed an intriguing and unique 1D-supramolecular chain-based self-assembled structure, the driving force of which is mainly the strong antiparallel π⋯π stacking and {⋯H-C-C-F}₂ dimer synthons. This compound not only highlights the potential of the isatin moiety in forming strong antiparallel π⋯π stacking interactions but also provides a platform to have considerable insight into the nature, strength and directionality of much debated π-π and C-H⋯F-C interactions. The in vitro biological studies revealed that three phenoxy pendant isatins PI1, PI2 and PI4 are highly potent inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase enzyme with IC₅₀ values of 0.52 ± 0.073 μg ml^-1, 0.72 ± 0.012 μg ml^-1 and 0.68 ± 0.011 μg ml^-1, respectively, showing comparable activity to the standard drug, donepezil (IC₅₀ = 0.73 ± 0.015 μg ml^-1). A simple and efficient synthesis of phenoxy pendant isatins PI1-12 from inexpensive and commercially available starting materials, and their high potential of acetyl cholinesterase inhibition provide an attractive opportunity to find more effective medication for Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Structure analysis of inclusion crystals of diimide-based macrocycles with halocarbons

Inclusion crystals containing several halocarbons were formed by three types of diimide-based macrocycles. Iodomethane was encapsulated within the cavity of the macrocycle through halogen-related interactions.

Halogen bonding in cadmium(II) MOFs: its influence on the structure and on the nitroaldol reaction in aqueous medium

A solvothermal reaction of Cd(II) with the dicarboxyl-functionalized arylhydrazone pro-ligands, 5-(2-(2,4,6-trioxotetrahydro-pyrimidin-5(2H)-ylidene)hydrazineyl)isophthalic acid (H₅L¹) and 5-(2-(2,4-dioxopentan-3-ylidene)hydrazineyl)isophthalic acid (H₃L²), or their halogen bond donor centre(s) decorated analogs 2,4,6-triiodo-5-(2-(2,4,6-trioxotetrahydropyrimidin-5(2H)-ylidene)hydrazineyl)isophthalic acid (H₅L³) and 5-(2-(2,4-dioxopentan-3-ylidene)hydrazineyl)-2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid (H₃L⁴), leads to the formation of known [Cd(H₃L¹)(H₂O)₂]_n (1) and new {[Cd(HL²)(H₂O)₂(DMF)]·H₂O}_n (2), [Cd(H₃L³)]_n (3) and {[Cd₂(μ-H₂O)₂(μ-H₂L⁴)₂(H₂L⁴)₂]·2H₂O}_n (4) coordination compounds, respectively. The aggregation of mononuclear units via Cd-OC and Cd-OH₂ coordination and C_Ar-I⋯I types of intramolecular halogen bonds lead to a dinuclear tecton 4. Both C_Ar-I⋯O and C_Ar-I⋯I types of intermolecular halogen bonds play a fundamental role in the supramolecular architectures of the obtained metal-organic frameworks 3 and 4. Theoretical (DFT) calculations confirmed the presence of the C_Ar-I⋯O and C_Ar-I⋯I halogen bonds in 3 and 4 and allowed their characterisation. The formation of intermolecular noncovalent interactions between the attached iodine substituents to the hydrazone ligands and polar solvent (water or methanol) molecules promoted, at least in part, the solubility of the corresponding complexes (3 and 4), which act as homogeneous catalyst precursors in the Henry reaction between aldehydes and nitroethane. The corresponding β-nitroalkanol products were obtained in good yields (66-79%) and with good diastereoselectivity (threo/erythro ca. 72 : 28) in water at room temperature.

Solvent-dependent alignments and halogen-related interactions in inclusion crystals of adamantane-based macrocycle with pyridazine moieties

Six inclusion crystals were formed from crystallization of an adamantane-based macrocycle bearing pyridazine parts in various solvents. In inclusion crystals with cyclic ethers, halogen⋯halogen interactions between the macrocycles were observed.

Competition between Intra and Intermolecular Triel Bonds. Complexes between Naphthalene Derivatives and Neutral or Anionic Lewis Bases

: A TrF2 group (Tr = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl) is placed on one of the α positions of naphthalene, and its ability to engage in a triel bond (TrB) with a weak (NCH) and strong (NC-) nucleophile is assessed by ab initio calculations. As a competitor, an NH2 group is placed on the neighboring Cα, from which point it forms an intramolecular TrB with the TrF2 group. The latter internal TrB reduces the intensity of the π-hole on the Tr atom, decreasing its ability to engage in a second external TrB. The intermolecular TrB is weakened by a factor of about two for the smaller Tr atoms but is less severe for the larger Tl. The external TrB can be quite strong nonetheless; it varies from a minimum of 8 kcal/mol for the weak NCH base, up to as much as 70 kcal/mol for CN-. Likewise, the appearance of an external TrB to a strong base like CN- lessens the ability of the Tr to engage in an internal TrB, to the point where such an intramolecular TrB becomes questionable.

On the ability of pnicogen atoms to engage in both σ and π-hole complexes. Heterodimers of ZF2C6H5 (Z = P, As, Sb, Bi) and NH3

When bound to a pair of F atoms and a phenyl ring, a pyramidal pnicogen (Z) atom can form a pnicogen bond wherein an NH₃ base lies opposite one F atom. In addition to this σ-hole complex, the ZF₂C₆H₅ molecule can distort in such a way that the NH₃ approaches on the opposite side to the lone pair on Z, where there is a so-called π-hole. The interaction energies of these π-hole dimers are roughly 30 kcal/mol, much larger than the equivalent quantities for the σ-hole complexes, which are only 4-13 kcal/mol. On the other hand, this large interaction energy is countered by the considerable deformation energy required for the Lewis acid to adopt the geometry necessary to form the π-hole complex. The overall energetics of the complexation reaction are thus more exothermic for the σ-hole dimers than for the π-hole dimers.

Adenine as a Halogen Bond Acceptor: A Combined Experimental and DFT Study

In this work, we report the cocrystallization of N9-ethyladenine with 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene (TFDIB), a classical XB donor. As far as our knowledge extends, this is the first cocrystal reported to date where an adenine derivative acts as a halogen bond acceptor. In the solid state, each adenine ring forms two centrosymmetric H-bonded dimers: one using N1···HA6–N6 and the other N7···HB6–N6. Therefore, only N3 is available as a halogen bond acceptor that, indeed, establishes an N···I halogen bonding interaction with TFDIB. The H-bonded dimers and halogen bonds have been investigated via DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations and the Bader’s Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) method at the B3LYP/6-311+G* level of theory. The influence of H-bonding interactions on the lone pair donor ability of N3 has also been analyzed using the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface calculations.

Photosensitive Schottky barrier diode behavior of a semiconducting Co(iii)–Na complex with a compartmental Schiff base ligand

The opto-electronic properties of an X-ray characterized, end-to-end azide bridged cobalt(iii)–sodium complex, [(N₃)CoLNa(N₃)]_n, have been investigated in detail. The complex is found to be a direct semiconductor material as confirmed by determining the band gap of this complex by experimental as well as theoretical studies. The complex has also been used to construct a photosensitive Schottky device. Optical conductivity, calculated from the DFT study, has been used to analyze how the conductivity of the material changes upon illumination. The electrical conductivity and concomitantly, the photoconductivity of the material increase as a consequence of photon absorption.

The opto-electronic properties of a cobalt(iii)–sodium complex have been studied with the help of both experimental and theoretical investigation. The complex has also been used to fabricate an effective photosensitive Schottky device.
