Syntheses and structures of three macrocyclic supramolecular complexes and one Zn II-containing coordination polymer generated from a semi-rigid multidentate N-containing ligand. ACTA CRYSTALLOGRAPHICA SECTION C-STRUCTURAL CHEMISTRY 2021; 77:29-39. Abstract
Semirigid organic ligands can adopt different conformations to construct coordination polymers with more diverse structures when compared to those constructed from rigid ligands. A new asymmetric semirigid organic ligand, 4-{2-[(pyridin-3-yl)methyl]-2H-tetrazol-5-yl}pyridine (L), has been prepared and used to synthesize three bimetallic macrocyclic complexes and one coordination polymer, namely, bis(μ-4-{2-[(pyridin-3-yl)methyl]-2H-tetrazol-5-yl}pyridine)bis[dichloridozinc(II)] dichloromethane disolvate, [Zn2Cl4(C12H10N6)2]·2CH2Cl2, (I), the analogous chloroform monosolvate, [Zn2Cl4(C12H10N6)2]·CHCl3, (II), bis(μ-4-{2-[(pyridin-3-yl)methyl]-2H-tetrazol-5-yl}pyridine)bis[diiodidozinc(II)] dichloromethane disolvate, [Zn2I4(C12H10N6)2]·2CH2Cl2, (III), and catena-poly[[[diiodidozinc(II)]-μ-4-{2-[(pyridin-3-yl)methyl]-2H-tetrazol-5-yl}pyridine] chloroform monosolvate], {[ZnI2(C12H10N6)]·CHCl3}n, (IV), by solution reaction with ZnX2 (X = Cl and I) in a CH2Cl2/CH3OH or CHCl3/CH3OH mixed solvent system at room temperature. Complex (I) is isomorphic with complex (III) and has a bimetallic ring possessing similar coordination environments for both of the ZnII cations. Although complex (II) also contains a bimetallic ring, the two ZnII cations have different coordination environments. Under the influence of the I- anion and guest CHCl3 molecule, complex (IV) displays a significantly different structure with respect to complexes (I)-(III). C-H...Cl and C-H...N hydrogen bonds, and π-π stacking or C-Cl...π interactions exist in complexes (I)-(IV), and these weak interactions play an important role in the three-dimensional structures of (I)-(IV) in the solid state. In addition, the fluorescence properties of L and complexes (I)-(IV) were investigated.

Abstract
Abstract
A new one-dimensional Zn(II) coordination polymer, {[ZnCl2(BBM)]·CH3OH}
n
(2,2-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1,3-benzimidazole [BBM]), has been obtained from the hydrothermal reaction of zinc chloride with the flexible bis-benzimidazole ligand BBM and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR and UV–vis spectra. Structural analysis has revealed that the BBM ligand connects the Zn(II) atoms to form a square-wave chain, which is further extended into supramolecular layers through hydrogen bonds and π···π stacking interactions. Solid-state fluorescence investigations showed that the Zn(II) coordination polymer has an emission peak at 381 nm upon excitation at 330 nm, which is attributed to ligand-centered luminescence. It is only slightly red shifted as compared to the ligand but partially quenched due to the strong π···π stacking interactions.

Abstract
Two new Zn2+-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid, i.e. H4(o,m-bpta), and N-donor ligands, namely, poly[[(μ4-biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylato)bis{[1,3-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}dizinc(II)] dimethylformamide monosolvate dihydrate], {[Zn2(C16H6O8)(C14H14N4)2]·C3H7NO·2H2O}n or {[Zn2(o,m-bpta)(1,3-bimb)2]·C3H7NO·2H2O}n (1) {1,3-bimb = [1,3-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}, and poly[[(μ4-biphenyl-2,2',5,5'-tetracarboxylato)bis{[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}dizinc(II)] monohydrate], {[Zn2(C16H6O8)(C14H14N4)2]·H2O}n or {[Zn2(o,m-bpta)(1,4-bimb)2]·H2O}n (2) {1,4-bimb = [1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(1H-imidazole)}, have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Structurally, the (o,m-bpta)4- ligands are fully deprotonated and combine with Zn2+ ions in μ4-coordination modes. Complex 1 is a (3,4)-connected porous network with honeycomb-like [Zn2(o,m-bpta)]n sheets formed by 4-connected (o,m-bpta)4- ligands. Complex 2 exhibits a (2,4)-connected network formed by 4-connected (o,m-bpta)4- ligands linking Zn2+ ions in left-handed helical chains. The cis-configured 1,3-bimb and 1,4-bimb ligands bridge Zn2+ ions to form multi-membered [Zn2(bimb)2] loops. Optically, the complexes show strong fluorescence and display larger red shifts compared to free H4(o,m-bpta). Complex 2 shows ferroelectric properties due to crystallizing in the C2v polar point group.

Abstract
A zinc(ii)-based coordination polymer (CP), namely [Zn(modbc)2] n (Zn-CP) (modbc = 2-methyl-6-oxygen-1,6-dihydro-3,4'-bipyridine-5-carbonitrile), has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structural determination reveals that Zn-CP is a two-dimensional framework structure with tetranuclear homometallic Zn4(modbc)4 units cross-linked by modbc. The excellent luminescence as well as good stability of Zn-CP do not enable it to have selective sensing capability for different ions. After encapsulation of Tb3+ in Zn-CP, the as-obtained fluorescent functionalized Tb3+@Zn-CP maintained excellent luminescence as well as stability, which made it a highly selective and sensitive multiresponsive luminescent sensor for Ru3+, Fe3+, CrO4 2-, Cr2O7 2-, and MnO4 - with high sensitivity, good anti-interference performance, and quick response time (∼10 s). The detection limits are 0.27 μM, 0.57 μM, 0.10 μM, 0.43 μM and 0.15 μM, respectively. A possible sensing mechanism was discussed in detail.

Abstract
Reported here are the design and fluorescence characters of a NiII/TbIII polymer, [Tb2Ni3(HCAM)6(H2O)12] n (1) (H3CAM = chelidamic acid). Under physiological conditions, the binding of biocompatible water soluble 1 to human serum albumin (HSA) was studied by spectroscopy techniques, which revealed that 1 could inherent the fluorescent light of HSA in a static quencher course and change the HSA second-level structure. The marked enhancement in 1 and its fluorescence intensity provide conclusive evidence that 1 can play the role of a "turn-on" sensor for recognition and detection of HSA in other biological interferents with a K sv value of 7.68 × 104 M-1 and a detection limit of 0.14 μM. Luminescence experiments show that 1 has high selectivity and sensitivity to MnO4 - in other anions. Its quenching efficiency (K sv) is 5.54 × 103 M-1, and the detection limit is 0.29 μM.

Abstract
Lanthanide MOFs (Ln-MOFs), {[Ln2(L)2(H2O)2]·5H2O·6DMAC}n, [Ln||| = Eu(1) and Tb(2); H3L = 4,4'-(((5-carboxy-1,3-phenylene)bis(azanediyl))bis(carbonyl)) dibenzoic acid, DMAC = N,N'-dimethylacetamide], with a new topology type have been isolated. Single crystal X-ray diffraction indicates that complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural with binuclear [Eu2(COO)7]n secondary building units as 7-connected nodes and H3L ligands as 3-connected nodes and can be viewed as a (5,7)-connected 3D framework with a new topological point symbol of {32·44·54} {34·46·56·65}. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit an excellent luminescence sensing response to inorganic ions Fe3+, Cr2O72-, MnO4- and 4-nitrophenol, with a low detection limit and high Ksv value. Interestingly, when the MnO4- ions are detected, the color of the solid sample is observed to change from yellow to brown, visually indicating luminescence induction, which makes the process of detecting MnO4- ions simpler and more practical. Moreover, by using time-resolved photoluminescence techniques, complex 1 can effectively eliminate background fluorescence interference during detection and improve detection accuracy. Solvent luminescence studies, pH stability and PXRD data indicate that complexes 1 and 2 can be used as excellent water-stable multi-response luminescent sensors for detecting a wide variety of toxic substances. In addition, the mechanism of selective detection is explained by the energy competition between the excitation of complexes 1 and 2 and the ultraviolet absorption of the responsive substance.
