Mapping of N-C Bond Formation from a Series of Crystalline Peri-Substituted Naphthalenes by Charge Density and Solid-State NMR Methodologies

A combination of charge density studies and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) 1 JNC coupling measurements supported by periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations is used to characterise the transition from an n-π* interaction to bond formation between a nucleophilic nitrogen atom and an electrophilic sp2 carbon atom in a series of crystalline peri-substituted naphthalenes. As the N⋅⋅⋅C distance reduces there is a sharp decrease in the Laplacian derived from increasing charge density between the two groups at ca. N⋅⋅⋅C = 1.8 Å, with the periodic DFT calculations predicting, and heteronuclear spin-echo NMR measurements confirming, the 1 JNC couplings of ≈3-6 Hz for long C-N bonds (1.60-1.65 Å), and 1 JNC couplings of <1 Hz for N⋅⋅⋅C >2.1 Å.

Conformational Switching through the One-Electron Reduction of an Acridinium-based, γ-Cationic Phosphine Gold Complex

Our efforts in the chemistry of gold complexes featuring ambiphilic phosphine-carbenium L/Z-type ligand have led us to consider the reduction of the carbenium moiety as a means to modulate the gold-carbenium interaction present in these complexes. Here, it was shown that the one-electron reduction of [(o-Ph₂ P(C₆ H₄ )Acr)AuCl]⁺ (Acr=9-N-methylacridinium) produces a neutral stable radical, the structure of which showed a marked increase in the Au-Acr distance. Related structural changes were observed for the phosphine oxide analogue [(o-Ph₂ P(O)(C₆ H₄ )Acr]⁺ , the reduction of which interfered with the P=O→carbenium interaction. These structural effects, driven by a reduction-induced change in the electronic and electrostatic characteristics of the compounds, showed that the charge and accepting properties of the carbenium unit can be modulated. These results highlight the redox-noninnocence of carbenium Z-type ligand, a feature that can be exploited to induce specific conformational changes.

Intra- and intermolecular interactions in a series of chlorido-tricarbonyl-diazabutadienerhenium(I) complexes: structural and theoretical studies

A series of new chlorido-tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes bearing alkyl-substituted diazabutadiene (DAB) ligands, namely N,N'-bis(2,4-dimethylbenzene)-1,4-diazabutadiene (L1), N,N'-bis(2,4-dimethylbenzene)-2,3-dimethyl-1,4-diazabutadiene (L2), N,N'-bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene)-2,3-dimethyl-1,4-diazabutadiene (L3) and N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylbenzene)-1,4-diazabutadiene (L4), were synthesized and investigated. The crystal structures have been fully characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. Density functional theory, natural bond orbital and non-covalent interaction index methods have been used to study the optimized geometry in the gas phase and intra- and intermolecular interactions in the complexes, respectively. The most important studied interactions in these metal carbonyl complexes are n→π*, n→σ* and π→π*. Among complexes 1-4, only 2 shows interesting intermolecular n→π* interactions due to lp(C[triple-bond]O)...π* and lp(Cl)...π* (lp = lone pair) contacts.

Supramolecular assembly through intermolecular n → π* interactions through a coordinated perrhenate formed via superoxidation of Re(i) to Re(vii) in the formation of substituted Re(CO)3 complexes bearing Diimine ligands

Two Re(i) tricarbonyl complexes bearing Ph₄TAP and dafone ligands and having a coordinated perrhenate group obtained via in situ superoxidation of Re(i) to Re(vii) have been characterized.

Modelling of an aza-Michael reaction from crystalline naphthalene derivatives containing peri–peri interactions: very long N–C bonds?

A correlation between N–C bond formation and CC bond breaking is constructed from the structures of a family of peri-naphthalenes with a second set of peri substituents.
