Abstract
Paracetamol (PCT), or acetaminophen, is an important drug used worldwide for various clinical purposes. However, the excessive or indiscriminate use of PCT can provoke liver and kidney dysfunction; hence, it is essential to determine the amount of this target in biological samples. In this work, we develop a quick, simple, and sensitive voltammetric method using chemically modified electrodes to determine PCT in complex matrices, including human serum and commercial solid formulations. We modify the carbon paste electrode with stevensite monoclinic clay mineral (Stv-CPE), using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to characterise and detect PCT. The kinetics study provides a better electrochemical characterisation of the electrode behaviour, finding the detection and quantitation limits of 0.2 μM and 0.5 μM under favourable conditions. Further, the best linear working concentration range is 0.6-100 μM for PCT, applying the proposed method to the quantitative determination of PCT content in reference tablet formulations and biological samples for validation.

Abstract
In cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food applications, many active ingredients have limited bioavailability in an aqueous environment, and in that context, nanoemulsions provide a mechanism for encapsulation, protection, and transport. These dispersed oil droplets are on the order of 100s of nanometers in diameter and owe their long-term stability to emulsifiers that are commonly charged. More recently, applications have been utilizing nonionic species as stabilizing agents due to their enhanced biosafety. DLVO (named after Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek) theory has been central in the description of colloid stability, which emphasizes repulsive electrostatic forces, while extended DLVO theory also accounts for steric effects. Past studies of nanoemulsions have largely employed charged surfactants and polyelectrolytes, making it difficult to decouple electrostatic and steric effects as they relate to droplet stability. To better understand steric and molecular factors contributing to the stability of "uncharged" droplets, we have created nanoemulsions with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and poly(N-vinylacetamide) (PNVA). Though SDS is anionic, with PNVA coating the droplet surfaces, the ζ-potentials of these nanoemulsions are ∼0 mV. Despite minimizing electrostatic contributions, these nanoemulsions are stable for upward of a month with interesting dynamics. By employing dynamic light scattering, vibrational sum frequency scattering spectroscopy, and calculating interaction pair potentials using extended DLVO theory, we learn that the thickness of the PNVA layer plays a critical role in stabilizing these "uncharged" nanoemulsions. Beyond the sterics, the molecular conformation of the PNVA strands also contributes to the droplet stability. The adsorbed PNVA strands are shown to form stratified, rigid polymer networks that prevent the nanoemulsions from rapid destabilization.

Abstract
Molecular engineering via functionalization has been a great tool to tune noncovalent intermolecular interactions. Herein, we demonstrate three-dimensional highly crystalline nanostructured D(C7CO)-BTBT films via carbonyl-functionalization of a fused thienoacene π-system, and strong Raman signal enhancements in Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) are realized. The small molecule could be prepared on the gram scale with a facile synthesis-purification. In the engineered films, polar functionalization induces favorable out-of-plane crystal growth via zigzag motif of dipolar C = O···C = O interactions and hydrogen bonds, and strengthens π-interactions. A unique two-stage film growth behavior is identified with an edge-on-to-face-on molecular orientation transition driven by hydrophobicity. The analysis of the electronic structures and the ratio of the anti-Stokes/Stokes SERS signals suggests that the π-extended/stabilized LUMOs with varied crystalline face-on orientations provide the key properties in the chemical enhancement mechanism. A molecule-specific Raman signal enhancement is also demonstrated on a high-LUMO organic platform. Our results demonstrate a promising guidance towards realizing low-cost SERS-active semiconducting materials, increasing structural versatility of organic-SERS platforms, and advancing molecule-specific sensing via molecular engineering. Nanostructured films of organic semiconductors with low lying LUMO orbitals can enhance Raman signals via a chemical enhancement mechanism but currently the material choice is limited to fluorinated oligothiophenes. Here, the authors investigate the growth of a porous thienoacene film enabled by carbonyls and demonstrate molecular specific organic-SERS platforms.

Abstract
A combined experimental and theoretical study of the biphenyl (BP) crystal is presented. The X-ray diffraction data collected at 100 K were subjected to Hirshfeld atom and multipole refinements of the electron density, ρ(r). A theoretical exploration of the potential energy surface (PES) of the crystal was also carried out. This investigation challenges the common assumption that the planar structure of BP in the phase I crystal is an average of two twisted configurations in a double-well potential. The theoretical computations provide compelling evidence that this structure corresponds to a minimum on the PES hence to a stable molecular arrangement. Consistently, the experiment showed no evidence of positional or dynamic disorder. The intramolecular hydrogen-hydrogen bonds detected are not repulsive. The topological analysis of the experimental and theoretical ρ(r) reveals that both the intra- and intermolecular H⋅⋅⋅H and the C-H⋅⋅⋅π contacts stabilize the BP crystal.

Abstract
The industrial polymeric carriers for peroral mesalazine application exploit, i.a., cellulose or polyacrylic acid derivatives, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and modified starch. Pectins, as natural polymers, are interesting materials in pharmaceutical applications due to properties such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the release of the drug from coated pectin beads doped with synthetic polymers as drug carriers to the colon, as well as interactions between ingredients. The drug release was carried out using basket apparatus. The amount of 5-ASA (5-aminosalicylic acid, mesalazine) released to the pH = 7.4 buffer with pectinase was measured at selected time intervals using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The zero-, first-, and second-order kinetics, as well as Higuchi, Korsmeyer-Peppas, and Hixon-Crowell equations, were used to analyze the release pattern. The interactions between beads components were investigated employing FTIR spectrophotometry and DSC study. The dissolution of the drug was divided into two parts. It was found that the release of 5-ASA followed mainly the Higuchi equation. The mass transport in the first stage of the release followed a non-Fickian model and the parameter n was in the range of 0.74 ± 0.2-0.99 ± 0.2. The formulation doped with PA (polyacrylic acid) was the most appropriate and capable of overcoming the variable conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
A detailed analysis of a complete set of the local potentials that appear in the Euler equation for electron density is carried out for noncovalent interactions in the crystal of a uracil derivative using experimental X-ray charge density. The interplay between the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and crystals and the local potentials and corresponding inner-crystal electronic forces of electrostatic and kinetic origin is explored. Partitioning of crystal space into atomic basins and atomic-like potential basins led us to the definite description of interatomic interaction and charge transfer. Novel physically grounded bonding descriptors derived within the orbital-free quantum crystallography provided the detailed examination of π-stacking and intricate C=O⋅⋅⋅π interactions and nonclassical hydrogen bonds present in the crystal. The donor-acceptor character of these interactions is revealed by analysis of Pauli and von Weizsäcker potentials together with well-known functions, e. g., deformation electron density and electron localization function. In this way, our analysis throws light on aspects of these closed-shell interactions hitherto hidden from the description.
