Methanol-to-olefin conversion in ABC-6 zeolite cavities: unravelling the role of cavity shape and size from density functional theory calculations

A Mechanistic Study of Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Imines on a Chiral Phosphoric Acid Derived Indium Metal-Organic Framework

A density functional theory (DFT) study is reported to examine the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of imines catalyzed by an indium metal-organic framework (In-MOF) derived from a chiral phosphoric acid (CPA). It is revealed that the imine and reducing agent (i.e., thiazoline) are simultaneously adsorbed on the CPA through H-bonding to form an intermediate, subsequently, a proton is transferred from thiazoline to imine. The transition state TS-R and TS-S are stabilized on the CPA via H-bonding. Compared to the TS-S, the TS-R has shorter H-bonding distances and longer C-H···π distances, it is more stable and experiences less steric hindrance. Consequently, the TS-R exhibits a lower activation barrier affording to the (R)-enantiomer within 68.1% ee in toluene. Imines with substituted groups such as -NO₂, -F, and -OCH₃ are used to investigate the substitution effects on the ATH. In the presence of an electron-withdrawing group like -NO₂, the electrophilicity of imine is enhanced and the activation barrier is decreased. The non-covalent interactions and activation-strain model (ASM) analysis reveal that the structural distortions and the differential noncovalent interactions of TSs in a rigid In-MOF provide the inherent driving force for enantioselectivity. For -OCH₃ substituted imine, the TS-S has the strongest steric hindrance, leading to the highest enantioselectivity. When the solvent is changed from toluene to dichloromethane, acetonitrile, and dimethylsulfoxide with increasing polarity, the activation energies of transition state increase whereas their difference decreases. This implies the reaction is slowed down and the enantioselectivity becomes lower in a solvent of smaller polarity. Among the four solvents, toluene turns out to be the best for the ATH. The calculated results in this study are in fairly good agreement with experimental observations. This study provides a mechanistic understanding of the reaction mechanism, as well as substitution and solvent effects on the activity and enantioselectivity of the ATH. The microscopic insights are useful for the development of new chiral MOFs toward important asymmetric reactions.

Study on the Synthesis of Chabazite Zeolites via Interzeolite Conversion of Faujasites

The interzeolite conversion of faujasite (FAU-type) zeolites to chabazite (CHA-type) zeolite in the presence of N,N,N-trimethyladamantammonium and N,N,N-dimethylethylcyclohexylammonium cations was investigated over a large compositional range by carefully controlling the reaction mixture compositions. Highly crystalline CHA zeolites were also obtained by the transformation of several zeolite types including EMT, LTL, LEV, RTH, and MFI frameworks. The formation of CHA zeolite from FAU zeolite precursors was substantially faster than that from zeolite L with a similar composition. High-silica CHA zeolites were also produced successfully using a mixture of TMAda with a number of less expensive organic structure-directing agents. The CHA zeolite materials have been synthesized with high crystallinity and with a Si/Al ratio ranging from 5 to 140. Our data support the importance of structural similarity between the zeolite precursors, nucleation/crystallization processes, and the zeolite product in the interzeolite conversion compared to conventional amorphous aluminosilicate gels. Our synthetic methods could be used to prepare other 8-membered ring zeolites such as AEI and AFX frameworks, potential candidates for selective catalytic reduction of NOx, light olefin production, and CO2 abatement.

The influence of adjacent Al atoms on the hydrothermal stability of H-SSZ-13: a first-principles study

The Al concentration and distribution have a great influence on the hydrothermal stability of the H-SSZ-13 zeolites in experiments. In this work, first-principles calculations are performed to clarify the decomposition mechanism of an H-SSZ-13 framework with adjacent Al atom pair distribution under hydrothermal conditions. It is found that the adjacent Al atoms have a tendency to occupy the para-sites of the 4-membered rings (4MRs) in the framework. Water molecules are chemisorbed onto the Al atom one by one, and the hydroxylation of the neighboring O atoms induces the breaking of the Al-O bonds, which causes the first dealumination in 4MRs. The other Al atom in the para-site can be easily removed from the framework once the first one is lost. The feasible subsequent dealumination of adjacent Al atoms would break the linker of 6MRs in the framework, which is responsible for the degraded hydrothermal stability. Moreover, the partial substitution of metal ions (such as Na⁺ and Cu⁺) for the protons in the framework will greatly stabilize the Al-O bonds and enlarge the energy barrier of para-site Al dealumination, which leads to the improved hydrothermal stability of H-SSZ-13.
