Effect of CNT over structural properties of SAPO-34 in MTO process: Experimental and molecular simulation studies

The hierarchical silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO-34) catalyst was synthesized using the mixtures of diethylamine (D) and butylamine (B) as a structure-directing agent (SDA), and carbon nanotube (CNT) as a secondary template in the hydrothermal method. The catalysts were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), N2 physisorption, and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) techniques and evaluated for the catalytic activity in the Methanol to Olefins (MTO) process. The results showed that the use of CNT as the secondary template improved the hierarchical structure of SAPO-34 due to increasing the external surface area and mesoporosity and decreasing the particle size and as a result, made better the performance of the prepared SAPO-34 zeolite in the MTO process. Among all the prepared samples, the CNT-B-D catalyst synthesized by mixing three templates displayed the highest ethylene and propylene selectivity of 49% and 34%, respectively. Also, using CNT in the synthesis of samples increased the catalytic stability. In addition, pure, binary, and ternary adsorption isotherms and diffusivities of the main products and reactants over the SAPO-34 were investigated by theoretical measurements, because sorption and diffusion affect the catalyst stability and C2-C3 selectivity in the MTO reaction. The higher diffusion rate of ethylene leads to following the aromatic-based cycle in the MTO process.

An investigation into the adsorption mechanism of n-butanol by ZIF-8: a combined experimental and ab initio molecular dynamics approach

The zeolitic imidazolate framework, ZIF-8, has been shown by experimental methods to have a maximum saturation adsorption capacity of 0.36 g g^-1 for n-butanol from aqueous solution, equivalent to a loading of 14 butanol molecules per unit cell or 7 molecules per sodalite β-cage. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) shows the presence of hydrogen bonding between adsorbed butanol molecules within the cage; the presence of three different O-H stretching modes indicates the formation of butanol clusters of varying size. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the butanol molecules, with an average hydrogen-bond coordination number of 0.9 after 15 ps simulation time. The simulations also uniquely demonstrate the presence of weaker interactions between the alcohol O-H group and the π-orbital of the imidazole ring on the internal surface of the cage during early stages of adsorption. The calculated adsorption energy per butanol molecule is -33.7 kJ mol^-1, confirming that the butanol is only weakly bound, driven primarily by the hydrogen bonding. Solid-state MAS NMR spectra suggest that the adsorbed butanol molecules possess a reasonable degree of mobility in their adsorbed state, rather than being rigidly held in specific sites. 2D ¹³C-¹H heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) experiments show interactions between the butanol aliphatic chain and the ZIF-8 framework experimentally, suggesting that O-H interactions with the π-orbital are only short lived. The insight gained from these results will allow the design of more efficient ways of recovering and isolating n-butanol, an important biofuel, from low-concentration solutions.

Zeolites in Adsorption Processes: State of the Art and Future Prospects

Zeolites have been widely used as catalysts, ion exchangers, and adsorbents since their industrial breakthrough in the 1950s and continue to be state-of the-art adsorbents in many separation processes. Furthermore, their properties make them materials of choice for developing and emerging separation applications. The aim of this review is to put into context the relevance of zeolites and their use and prospects in adsorption technology. It has been divided into three different sections, i.e., zeolites, adsorption on nanoporous materials, and chemical separations by zeolites. In the first section, zeolites are explained in terms of their structure, composition, preparation, and properties, and a brief review of their applications is given. In the second section, the fundamentals of adsorption science are presented, with special attention to its industrial application and our case of interest, which is adsorption on zeolites. Finally, the state-of-the-art relevant separations related to chemical and energy production, in which zeolites have a practical or potential applicability, are presented. The replacement of some of the current separation methods by optimized adsorption processes using zeolites could mean an improvement in terms of sustainability and energy savings. Different separation mechanisms and the underlying adsorption properties that make zeolites interesting for these applications are discussed.

Adsorption and diffusion of the H2/CO2/CO/MeOH/EtOH mixture into the ZIF-7 using molecular simulation

The adsorption and diffusion of synthesis gas components (methanol, ethanol, H₂, CO_2, and CO molecules) in ZIF-7 by grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation were investigated. The initial diffusion coefficient at the beginning of the process depends on the kinetic diameter of the guest molecules. Also, the diffusion coefficient at equilibrium conditions probably depends on the interaction between the guest molecules with the ZIF-7 framework. The radial distribution function results indicate that the distribution of guest molecules in the framework is affected by the interaction between the guest molecules. These results indicate that the CO, CO₂, and H₂ guest molecules are adsorbed on both the Zn metal atom and the organic linker (especially the C₁ atom). In contrast, the organic linker is the most favorable adsorption site for methanol and ethanol guest molecules. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of guest molecules in binary mixtures is related to the attraction or repulsion between the guest molecules.

Molecular dynamic simulation studies of adsorption and diffusion behaviors of methanol and ethanol through ZSM-5 zeolite

Due to the importance of synthesis gas's entire conversion to methanol, the separation of methanol from unconverted synthesis gas is an industrial challenge. In this work, the influence of temperature, guest molecules concentrations (methanol and ethanol), and acid site density (Si/Al) of zeolites on the diffusion of methanol and ethanol, pure and binary mixture (80% methanol and 20% ethanol) in silicalite-1 and HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 47 and 23) were studied by using of the COMPASS force-field molecular dynamics method. Also, the adsorption of pure methanol and ethanol and binary mixture through these zeolites has been studied by using the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. The calculated adsorption rate and isosteric heat of adsorption for ethanol are lower and higher than methanol, respectively. The results of the binary mixture show that HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 23) has the lowest adsorption selectivity and most diffusion selectivity. The calculated diffusion coefficients of methanol and ethanol guest molecules decreased with rising guest molecule concentration and Si/Al-ratios. The effect of both agents was investigated by analysis of mean square displacement (MSD) and RDF diagram.

Macroscopic and Microscopic View of Competitive and Cooperative Adsorption of Alcohol Mixtures on ZIF-8

While in most adsorptive separations different mixture components tend to compete for different adsorption sites, we report the existence of cooperative effects in the adsorption of alcohols (ethanol and 1-butanol) from the vapor phase on ZIF-8. The presence of these molecules in binary mixtures leads to an increase in their equilibrium capacities, compared to the pure component isotherms. These effects were first observed when predicting the mixture equilibrium capacities using the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) and were also observed via grand canonical Monte Carlo (GC MC) simulations. GC MC simulations showed that the interaction between adsorbate molecules leads to the cooperative effect predicted by IAST. The predicted cooperative adsorption could be confirmed via breakthrough experiments. In these experiments, a "roll-up" of 1-butanol was observed during the regeneration of a ZIF-8 packed column. A dynamic breakthrough model employing IAST was developed and used to explain the effect of the adsorption equilibrium on the dynamic breakthrough profiles.
