Ab initio electronic structure analysis of ground and excited states of HfN0,

High-level ab initio electronic structure analysis of third-row transition metal (TM)-based diatomic species is challenging and has been perpetually lagging. In this work, fourteen and eighteen electronic states of HfN and HfN+ respectively are studied, employing multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) and coupled cluster singles doubles and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] theories under larger correlation-consistent basis sets. Their potential energy curves (PECs), energetics, and spectroscopic parameters are reported. Core electron correlation effects on their properties are also investigated. Chemical bonding patterns of several low-lying electronic states are introduced based on the equilibrium electron configurations. The ground state of HfN (X2Σ+) has the 1σ22σ23σ11π4 electronic configuration, and the ionization of the 3σ1 electron produces the ground state of HfN+ (X1Σ+). Ground states of both HfN and HfN+ are triple bonded in nature and bear 124.86 and 109.10 kcal mol-1 binding energies with respect to their ground state fragments. The findings of this work agree well with the limited experimental literature available and provide useful reference values for future experimental analysis of HfN and HfN+.

L3-edge X-ray spectroscopy of rhodium and palladium compounds

L3-edge high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detection X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra for palladium and rhodium compounds are presented, with focus on their electronic structures. The data are compared with transmission XANES spectra recorded at the K-edge. A correlation between the absorption edge energy and the metal ion oxidation state is not observed. Despite the different filling of the 4d orbitals and different local coordination, the Rh and Pd compounds show remarkably similar spectral shapes. Calculation of the density of states and of the L3-XANES data reproduce the experimental results.

DAPD Set of Pd-Containing Diatomic Molecules: Accurate Molecular Properties and the Great Lengths to Obtain Them

In the present study, we obtained reliable bond energy, bond length, and zero-point vibrational frequency for a set of diatomic Pd species (the DAPD set). It includes PdH, Pd2, and PdX (X = B, C, N, O, F, Al, Si, P, S, and Cl). Our highest-level protocol (W4X-L) represents scalar and spin-orbit relativistic, valence- and inner-valence correlated, extrapolated CCSDTQ(5) energy. The DAPD set of molecules is challenging for computational chemistry methods in different manners; for Pd2, the spin-orbit contribution to the bond energy is fairly large, whereas for PdC and PdSi, the post-CCSD(T) correlation components are considerable. The diverse range of requirements represents a significant challenge for lower-level methods. While density functional theory (DFT) methods generally yield good agreements for bond lengths and vibrational frequencies, large deviations are found for bond energies. In general, hybrid DFT methods are more accurate than nonhybrid functionals, but the agreement in individual cases varies. This illustrates the critical role that new high-quality reference data would play in the continual development of lower-cost methods.

Optical spectroscopy of the previously unobserved palladium monosulfide (PdS) radical

The optical spectra of the palladium monosulfide (PdS) molecule in gas phase have been investigated for the first time through laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and single-vibronic-level (SVL) emission spectroscopies. The I3Σ- - X3Σ- transition system containing 16 vibronic bands was identified in the LIF spectra, covering the energy range of 22 030-23 400 cm-1. The spectra with rotational resolution allowed for the determination of the molecular constants in both the ground X and excited I electronic states, involving the spin-orbit splitting, rotational constant, vibrational frequency, and isotope shift. Isotopically resolved SVL emission spectra permitted the observation of the spin-orbit splitting, vibrational frequency, and vibrational isotope shift of the X3Σ-0+,1 and A3Π2,1,0-,0+ states as they transitioned from the excited I state to the vibrational levels of the X and A states. Ab initio calculations presented plenty of the Λ-S and Ω states of PdS below 28 000 cm-1 and provided strong support for the assignments of the experimental observation.

Transition metal oxide complexes as molecular catalysts for selective methane to methanol transformation: any prospects or time to retire?

Transition metal oxides have been extensively used in the literature for the conversion of methane to methanol. Despite the progress made over the past decades, no method with satisfactory performance or economic viability has been detected. The main bottleneck is that the produced methanol oxidizes further due to its weaker C-H bond than that of methane. Every improvement in the efficiency of a catalyst to activate methane leads to reduction of the selectivity towards methanol. Is it therefore prudent to keep studying (both theoretically and experimentally) metal oxides as catalysts for the quantitative conversion of methane to methanol? This perspective focuses on molecular metal oxide complexes and suggests strategies to bypass the current bottlenecks with higher weight on the computational chemistry side. We first discuss the electronic structure of metal oxides, followed by assessing the role of the ligands in the reactivity of the catalysts. For better selectivity, we propose that metal oxide anionic complexes should be explored further, while hydrophylic cavities in the vicinity of the metal oxide can perturb the transition-state structure for methanol increasing appreciably the activation barrier for methanol. We also emphasize that computational studies should target the activation reaction of methanol (and not only methane), the study of complete catalytic cycles (including the recombination and oxidation steps), and the use of molecular oxygen as an oxidant. The titled chemical conversion is an excellent challenge for theory and we believe that computational studies should lead the field in the future. It is finally shown that bottom-up approaches offer a systematic way for exploration of the chemical space and should still be applied in parallel with the recently popular machine learning techniques. To answer the question of the title, we believe that metal oxides should still be considered provided that we change our focus and perform more systematic investigations on the activation of methanol.

Electronic structure of the ground and excited states of neutral and charged silicon hydrides, SiHx0/+/-, x = 1-4

The ground and excited electronic states of the titled species are investigated with multi-reference configuration interaction and diffuse basis sets. We found that in addition to the valence orbitals, the inclusion of the 4s, 4p, and especially 3d orbitals (although with minimal population) of silicon in the active space of the reference complete active space self-consistent field wavefunction are necessary for the proper convergence of the calculations. We also demonstrate that the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set provides quite accurate results compared to both larger basis sets and basis set limit results at a lower computational cost. The excited states involve excitations within the 3s and 3p orbitals of silicon (especially for the mono- and di-hydrides), followed by excitations from the Si-H bonding orbitals to either silicon valence or Rydberg (4s, 4p) orbitals. The number of electronic states per energy unit decrease as we add hydrogen atoms, and the first excited state of SiH₄ is at 9.0 eV and leads to SiH₃ + H. All species have stable ground state structures with all hydrogen atoms bound to silicon, except for SiH₄⁺ and SiH₄^-. The former dissociates to SiH₂⁺ + H₂, while the latter loses an electron or can dissociate forming H₂ as well.

Understanding the chemical bonding of ground and excited states of HfO and HfB with correlated wavefunction theory and density functional approximations

Knowledge of the chemical bonding of HfO and HfB ground and low-lying electronic states provides essential insights into a range of catalysts and materials that contain Hf-O or Hf-B moieties. Here, we carry out high-level multi-reference configuration interaction theory and coupled cluster quantum chemical calculations on these systems. We compute full potential energy curves, excitation energies, ionization energies, electronic configurations, and spectroscopic parameters with large quadruple-ζ and quintuple-ζ quality correlation consistent basis sets. We also investigate equilibrium chemical bonding patterns and effects of correlating core electrons on property predictions. Differences in the ground state electron configuration of HfB(X⁴Σ^-) and HfO(X¹Σ⁺) lead to a significantly stronger bond in HfO than HfB, as judged by both dissociation energies and equilibrium bond distances. We extend our analysis to the chemical bonding patterns of the isovalent HfX (X = O, S, Se, Te, and Po) series and observe similar trends. We also note a linear trend between the decreasing value of the dissociation energy (D_e) from HfO to HfPo and the singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_S-T) of the molecule. Finally, we compare these benchmark results to those obtained using density functional theory (DFT) with 23 exchange-correlation functionals spanning multiple rungs of "Jacob's ladder." When comparing DFT errors to coupled cluster reference values on dissociation energies, excitation energies, and ionization energies of HfB and HfO, we observe semi-local generalized gradient approximations to significantly outperform more complex and high-cost functionals.

Methane to Methanol Conversion Facilitated by Anionic Transition Metal Centers: The Case of Fe, Ni, Pd, and Pt

Density functional theory and high-level ab initio electronic structure calculations are performed to study the mechanism of the partial oxidation of methane to methanol facilitated by the titled anionic transition metal atoms. The energy landscape for the overall reaction M^- + N₂O + CH₄ → M^- + N₂ + CH₃OH (M = Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt) is constructed for different reaction pathways for all four metals. The comparison with earlier experimental and theoretical results for cationic centers demonstrates the better performance of the metal anions. The main advantage is that anionic centers interact weakly with the produced methanol. This fact facilitates the fast removal of methanol from the catalytic center and prevents the overoxidation of methane. Moreover, a moderate or high energy barrier for the M^- + CH₄ → HMCH₃^- reaction step is observed, which protects the metal center from deactivation. Future work should focus on the identification of proper ligands, which stabilize the negative charge on the metal (electronic factors) and prevent the formation of the global CH₃MOH^- minimum (steric factors). Finally, a composite electronic structure method (combining size extensive coupled clusters approaches and accurate multireference configuration interaction) is proposed for computationally demanding systems and is applied to Fe^-.

Ab initio investigation of the ground and excited states of RuO+,0,- and their reaction with water

High-level quantum chemical calculations on RuO0,± elucidate the electronic structure of their low-lying electronic states. For thirty-two states, we report the electronic configurations, bond lengths, vibrational frequencies, spin-orbit splittings, and excitation energies. The electronic states of RuO can be generated from those of RuO+ by adding one electron to the σ non-bonding orbital closely resembling the 5s atomic orbital of Ru. The ground states for RuO and RuO- are clearly identified as 5Δ and 4Δ, but the two states (4Δ and 2Π) compete for RuO+. The difficulty of calculations is revealed by our small binding energies compared to the experimental values. In addition, we studied the reaction of the three species with water in their ground and selected low-lying electronic states. We found a consistent decrease of the activation energy barriers and higher exothermicity as we add electrons to the system. RuO- is found to facilitate the reaction for both kinetic and thermodynamic reasons.

O-H and C-H Bond Activations of Water and Methane by RuO2+ and (NH3)RuO2+: Ground and Excited States

Investigation of the ground and excited states of RuO²⁺ is carried out using multireference quantum chemical methodologies. The electronic structure is explored in detail, and accurate spectroscopic constants for 12 states are reported. Although ruthenium belongs to the same group as iron, the ground state of RuO²⁺ is ¹Σ⁺ with a strong oxo character as opposed to the ³Δ of FeO²⁺ with primarily oxyl character. To see the effect of the different electronic structure of RuO²⁺ on the O-H and C-H bond activation processes, we studied its reaction with one water or methane molecule. Reaction energies and activation barriers are given for six low-lying electronic states of singlet, triplet, and quintet spin multiplicities. It is found that the higher-energy quintet state (⁵Σ⁺) provides the lowest activation energies and is the same state responsible for the C-H activation for FeO²⁺ complexes. The reason is attributed to its weaker metal-oxygen bond (longer bond length), which is "prepared" to be activated at the same time with the O-H and C-H bonds. The effect of an ammonia ligand in the chemical activity is also discussed.

Electronic and geometric structure analysis of neutral and anionic metal nitric chalcogens: The case of MNX series (M=Li, Na, Be and X=O, S, Se, Te)

Coupled cluster and multireference configuration approaches are employed to study the electronic and geometric structures of mono-coordinated complexes of lithium, sodium, and beryllium with nitric oxide and its isovalent NS, NSe, and NTe species. Ground and low-lying excited states were examined for both linear-bonded and side-bonded isomers. We show that the ionic M⁺ NX^- (M=Li, Na, Be and X=O, S, Se, Te) picture is a more natural representation and can account for the symmetry of the low-lying electronic states as Σ^- , Δ, and Σ⁺ , the smaller excitation energies and the larger binding energies for heavier X. An additional electron binds to the positively charged Li and Na terminal creating stable anions. The electron affinity (EA) of LiNX and NaNX species is in the 0.5-0.8 eV range. Despite the negative EA of beryllium and the very small EA of NO, the BeNO molecule has an EA of ~1.0 eV, which is increased to ~1.5 eV for the heavier BeNX species. This is attributed to the fact that the additional electron goes to the beryllium end for BeNO but to a π(MN)π*(NX) orbital of the rest species. Our accurate results contradict previous findings and serve as a guide for future experimental studies. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Quantum chemical calculations on NbO and its reaction with methane: ground and excited electronic states

Our high-level calculations show that high-spin NbO electronic states facilitate the methane to methanol transformation via a very efficient radical mechanism, as opposed to the [2+2] mechanism observed for the rest of the low-lying states.
