Energetics and spectroscopic studies of CNO (-) (H 2 O) n $$ {\mathbf{CNO}}^{\left(\hbox{-} \right)}{\left({\mathbf{H}}_{\mathbf{2}}\mathbf{O}\right)}_{\mathbf{n}} $$ clusters and the temperature dependencies of the isomers: An approach based on a combined recipe of parallel tempering and quantum chemical methods

A system associated with several number of weak interactions supports numerous number of stable structures within a narrow range of energy. Often, a deterministic search method fails to locate the global minimum geometry as well as important local minimum isomers for such systems. Therefore, in this work, the stochastic search technique, namely parallel tempering, has been executed on the quantum chemical surface of theCNO (-) (H 2 O) n $$ {\mathrm{CNO}}^{\left(\hbox{-} \right)}{\left({\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O}\right)}_n $$ system forn = 1 $$ n=1 $$ -8 to generate global minimum as well as several number of local minimum isomers. IR spectrum can act as the fingerprint property for such system to be identified. Thus, IR spectroscopic features have also been included in this work. Vertical detachment energy has also been calculated to obtain clear information about number of water molecules in several spheres around the central anion. In addition, in a real experimental scenario, not only the global but also the local minimum isomers play an important role in determining the average value of a particular physically observable property. Therefore, the relative conformational populations have been determined for all the evaluated structures for the temperature range between 20K and 400K. Further to understand the phase change behavior, the configurational heat capacities have also been calculated for different sizes.

Quantum cluster equilibrium theory applied to liquid ammonia

Through this paper, the authors propose using the quantum cluster equilibrium (QCE) theory to reinvestigate ammonia clusters in the liquid phase. The ammonia clusters from size monomer to hexadecamer were considered to simulate the liquid ammonia in this approach. The clusterset used to model the liquid ammonia is an ensemble of different structures of ammonia clusters. After studious research of the representative configurations of ammonia clusters through the cluster research program ABCluster, the configurations have been optimized at the MN15/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. These optimizations lead to geometries and frequencies as inputs for the Peacemaker code. The QCE study of this molecular system permits us to get the liquid phase populations in a temperature range of 190-260 K, covering the temperatures from the melting point to the boiling point. The results show that the population of liquid ammonia comprises mainly the ammonia hexadecamer followed by pentadecamer, tetradecamer, and tridecamer. We noted that the small-sized ammonia clusters do not contribute to the population of liquid ammonia. In addition, the thermodynamic properties, such as heat of vaporization, heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy, and free energies, obtained by the QCE theory have been compared to the experiment given some relatively good agreements in the gas phase and show considerable discrepancies in liquid phase except the density. Finally, based on the predicted population, we calculated the infrared spectrum of liquid ammonia at 215 K temperature. It comes out that the calculated infrared spectrum qualitatively agrees with the experiment.

Monomers of Glycine and Serine Have a Limited Ability to Hydrate in the Atmosphere

The role of atmospheric aerosols on climate change is one of the biggest uncertainties in most global climate models. Organic aerosols have been identified as potential cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and amino acids are organic molecules that could serve as CCN. Amino acids make up a significant portion of the total organic material in the atmosphere, and herein we present a systematic study of hydration for two of the most common atmospheric amino acids, glycine and serine. We compute DLPNO/CCSD(T)//M08-HX/MG3S thermodynamic properties and atmospheric concentrations of Gly(H₂O)_n and Ser(H₂O)_n, where n = 1-5. We predict that serine-water clusters have higher concentrations at n = 1 and 5, while glycine-water clusters have higher concentrations at n = 2-4. However, both glycine and serine are inferred to exist primarily in their nonhydrated monomer forms in the absence of other species such as sulfuric acid.

Exploring self-organization of molecular tether molecules on a gold surface by global structure optimization

We employ nondeterministic global cluster structure optimization, based on the evolutionary algorithms paradigm, to model the self-assembly of complex molecules on a surface. As a real-life application example directly related to many recent experiments, we use this approach for the assembly of triazatriangulene "platform" molecules on the Au(111) surface. Without additional restrictions like spatial discretizations, coarse-graining or precalculated adsorption poses, and despite the proof-of-principle character of this study, we achieve satisfactory qualitative agreement with several experimental observations and can provide answers to questions that experiments on these species had left open so far. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
