Stacking-Mediated Type-I/Type-II Transition in Two-Dimensional MoTe2/PtS2 Heterostructure: A First-Principles Simulation

Recently, a two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure has been widely investigated as a photocatalyst to decompose water using the extraordinary type-II band structure. In this work, the MoTe2/PtS2 van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) is constructed with different stacking structures. Based on density functional calculations, the stacking-dependent electronic characteristic is explored, so that the MoTe2/PtS2 vdWH possesses type-I and type-II band structures for the light-emitting device and photocatalyst, respectively, with decent stacking configurations. The band alignment of the MoTe2/PtS2 vdWH is also addressed to obtain suitable band edge positions for water-splitting at pH 0. Furthermore, the potential drop is investigated, resulting from charge transfer between the MoTe2 and PtS2, which is another critical promotion to prevent the recombination of the photogenerated charges. Additionally, the MoTe2/PtS2 vdWH also demonstrates a novel and excellent optical absorption capacity in the visible wavelength range. Our work suggests a theoretical guide to designing and tuning the 2D heterostructure using photocatalytic and photovoltaic devices.

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) with band alignment transformation in multi-functional devices

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) with tunable band alignment have the potential to be benignant in the development of minimal multi-functional and controllable electronics, but they have received little attention thus far. It is crucial to characterize and control the band alignment in semiconducting vdWHs, which determines the electronic and optoelectronic properties. The future success of optoelectronic devices will require improved electronic property control techniques, such as using an external electric field or strain engineering, to change the electronic structures directly. Herein, we review heterostructures fabricated as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as one of their constituent monolayers with other notable 2D materials that can transfer from type-II to type-III (type-III > type-II) band alignment when a biaxial strain or electric field is applied.

Tuning Valleys and Wave Functions of van der Waals Heterostructures by Varying the Number of Layers: A First-Principles Study

In van der Waals heterostructures of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) electron and hole states are spatially localized in different layers forming long-lived interlayer excitons. Here, the influence of additional electron or hole layers on the electronic properties of a MoS₂ /WSe₂ heterobilayer (HBL), which is a direct bandgap material, is investigated from first principles. Additional layers modify the interlayer hybridization, mostly affecting the quasiparticle energy and real-space extend of hole states at the Γ and electron states at the Q valleys. For a sufficient number of additional layers, the band edges move from K to Q or Γ, respectively. Adding electron layers to the HBL leads to more delocalized K and Q states, while Γ states do not extend much beyond the HBL, even when more hole layers are added. These results suggest a simple and yet powerful way to tune band edges and the real-space extent of the electron and hole wave functions in TMDC heterostructures, potentially affecting strongly the lifetime and dynamics of interlayer excitons.

Optical Management of CQD/AgNP@SiNW Arrays with Highly Efficient Capability of Dye Degradation

The facile synthetic method for the preparation of incorporated carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with well-aligned silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays is demonstrated, offering the superior photodegradation capabilities covering UV to visible wavelength regions. By examining the morphology, microstructure, crystallinity, chemical feature, surface groups, light-emitting, and reflection characteristics, these hybrid heterostructures are systematically identified. Moreover, the involving degradation kinetics, band diagram, cycling capability, and underlying mechanism of photodegradation are investigated, validating their remarkable and reliable photocatalytic performances contributed from the strongly reduced light reflectivity, superior capability of charge separation, and sound wettability with dye solutions.
