Operando PEPICO unveils the catalytic fast pyrolysis mechanism of the three methoxyphenol isomers

The development of lignin valorization processes such as catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) to produce fine chemicals and fuels leads to a more sustainable future. The implementation of CFP is enabled by understanding the chemistry of lignin constituents, which, however, requires thorough mechanistic investigations by detecting reactive species. In this contribution, we investigate the CFP of the three methoxyphenol (MP) isomers over H-ZSM-5 utilizing vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation and operando photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy. All isomers demethylate at first to yield benzenediols, from which dehydroxylation reactions proceed to produce phenol and benzene. Additional pathways to form benzene proceed over cyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene, and fulvene intermediates. The detection of trace amounts of methanol in the product stream suggests a demethoxylation reaction to yield phenol. Guaiacol (2- or ortho-MP) exhibits slightly higher reactivity compared to 3-MP and 4-MP, due to the formation of the fulvenone ketene, which opens additional routes to benzene and phenol. When compared to benzenediol catalytic pyrolysis, the additional methyl group in MP leads to high conversion at lower reactor temperatures, which is mostly owed to the lower H₃C–O vs. H–O bond energy and the possibility to demethoxylate to produce phenol.

Demethylation, demethoxylation and fulvenone ketene formation determine the reactivity of methoxyphenols over H-ZSM-5 to yield phenols, benzene and toluene. Intermediates are isomer-selectively detected utilizing threshold photoelectron spectroscopy.

Dynamics of Methyl Radical Formation Following 266 nm Dissociative Photoionization of Xylenes and Mesitylene

The 266 nm dissociative photoionization of three xylene isomers and mesitylene leading to the formation of methyl radical was examined. The total translational energy distribution profiles [P(E_T)] for the methyl radical were almost identical for all of the three isomers of xylene and mesitylene, while a substantial difference was observed for the corresponding P(E_T) profile of the co-fragment produced by loss of one methyl group in m-xylene. This observation is attributed to the formation of the methyl radical from alternate channels induced by the probe. The P(E_T) profiles were rationalized based on the dissociation of {sp²}C-C{sp³} bond in the cationic state, wherein the {sp²}C-C{sp³} bond dissociation energy is substantially lower relative to the neutral ground state. The dissociation in the cationic state follows a resonant three-photon absorption process, resulting in a maximum translational energy of about 1.6-1.8 eV for the photofragments in the center-of-mass frame. Fitting of the P(E_T) profiles to empirical function reveals that the dynamics of {sp²}C-C{sp³} bond dissociation is insensitive to the position of substitution but marginally dependent on the number of methyl groups.

The Gas-Phase Infrared Spectra of Xylyl Radicals

The three isomers of the xylyl radical, C₈H₉, are possible intermediates in the formation of soot and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Their infrared spectra have been recorded by IR/UV ion dip spectroscopy using free electron laser radiation. The radicals were generated by flash pyrolysis from the corresponding nitrites and resonantly ionized via the D₃ ← D₀ transition around 310 nm. Mid-infrared spectra of the three xylyl isomers were recorded between 550 and 1700 cm^-1 and are in excellent agreement with computations, provided that overtones and combination bands are included in the simulation. The results show that the three xylyl isomers can be distinguished by their infrared spectra and that no isomerization occurs in the pyrolysis reactor. The IR spectra obtained at m/z = 208 indicate that dimerization of xylyl radicals leads to substituted stilbenes, which has not been observed for benzyl.

Metamorphic meta isomer: carbon dioxide and ketenes are formed via retro-Diels–Alder reactions in the decomposition of meta-benzenediol

Deoxygenation of the lignin model compound resorcinol was investigated using VUV synchrotron radiation: Formation of two reactive ketenes and decarboxylation are the dominating pathways, much different from the other two benzenediol isomers.
