The dramatic effect of N-methylimidazole on trans axial ligand binding to ferric heme: experiment and theory

Photophysical properties of Pt(ii) complexes based on the benzoquinoline (bzq) ligand with OLED implication: a theoretical study

In this study, we investigate photophysical properties of eight inorganic Pt(ii) complexes containing the bzq (benzoquinoline) ligand for OLED applications using high-level density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. We explore the radiative and non-radiative relaxation constants (k r, k nr), spin-orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements, and spectral properties. To ensure compatibility between the host and guest compounds, we determine the HOMO and LUMO energy levels, as well as the triplet excitation energies of the selected systems, and evaluate their efficiency for OLED devices. Our findings indicate that all systems, except for 2a and 2b, exhibit a small S1-T1 energetic gap (ΔE ≤ 0.60 eV) and promising SOC matrix elements (25-93 cm-1), leading to a significant intersystem crossing (ISC) process. These complexes also show promising radiative relaxation rates (k r = ∼10-4 s-1) and high phosphorescent quantum yields (Φ > 30%). Thus, our results confirm that six out of the eight selected Pt(ii) complexes are promising candidates for use in the emitting layer (EML) of OLED devices as efficient green emitters.

Unraveling Meso-Substituent Steric Effects on the Mechanism of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in NiII Porphyrin Hydrides Using DFT Method

Substituents at the meso-site of metalloporphyrins profoundly influence the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism. This study employs density functional theory (DFT) to computationally analyze NiII-porphyrin and its hydrides derived from tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin molecules, presenting stereoisomers in ortho- or para-positions. The results reveal that the spatial resistance effect of meso-substituted groups at the ortho- and para-positions induces significant changes in Ni-N bond lengths, angles, and reaction dynamics. For ortho-position substituents forming complex I, a favorable 88.88 ų spherical space was created, facilitating proton coordination and the formation of H2 molecules; conversely, para-position substituents forming complex II impeded H2 formation until bimolecular complexes arose. Molecular dynamics (MD) analysis and comparison were conducted on the intermediation products of I-H2 and (II-H)2, focusing on the configuration and energy changes. In the I-H2 products, H2 molecules underwent separation after 150 fs and overcame the 2.2 eV energy barrier. Subsequently, significant alterations in the spatial structure were observed as complex I deformed. In the case of (II-H)2, it was influenced by the distinctive "sandwich" configuration; the spatial structure necessitated overcoming a 6.7 eV energy barrier for H2 detachment and a process observed after 2400 fs.

Dioxygen and glucose force motion of the electron-transfer switch in the iron(III) flavohemoglobin-type nitric oxide dioxygenase

Kinetic and structural investigations of the flavohemoglobin-type NO dioxygenase have suggested critical roles for transient Fe(III)O2 complex formation and O2-forced movements affecting hydride transfer to the FAD cofactor and electron-transfer to the Fe(III)O2 complex. Stark-effect theory together with structural models and dipole and internal electrostatic field determinations provided a semi-quantitative spectroscopic method for investigating the proposed Fe(III)O2 complex and O2-forced movements. Deoxygenation of the enzyme causes Stark effects on the ferric heme Soret and charge-transfer bands revealing the Fe(III)O2 complex. Deoxygenation also elicits Stark effects on the FAD that expose forces and motions that create a more restricted NADH access to FAD for hydride transfer and switch electron-transfer off. Glucose also forces the enzyme toward an off state. Amino acid substitutions at the B10, E7, E11, G8, D5, and F7 positions influence the Stark effects of O2 on resting heme spin states and FAD consistent with the proposed roles of the side chains in the enzyme mechanism. Deoxygenation of ferric myoglobin and hemoglobin A also induces Stark effects on the hemes suggesting a common 'oxy-met' state. The ferric myoglobin and hemoglobin heme spectra are also glucose-responsive. A conserved glucose or glucose-6-phosphate binding site is found bridging the BC-corner and G-helix in flavohemoglobin and myoglobin suggesting novel allosteric effector roles for glucose or glucose-6-phosphate in the NO dioxygenase and O2 storage functions. The results support the proposed roles of a ferric O2 intermediate and protein motions in regulating electron-transfer during NO dioxygenase turnover.

Experimental and Theoretical Study on Crown Ether-Appended-Fe(III) Porphyrin Complexes and Catalytic Oxidation Cyclohexene with O2

Modifying non-precious metal porphyrins at the meso-position is sufficient to further improve the ability to activate O₂ and the selectivity of the corresponding redox products. In this study, a crown ether-appended Fe(III) porphyrin complex (FeTC₄PCl) was formed by replacing Fe(III) porphyrin (FeTPPCl) at the meso-position. The reactions of FeTPPCl and FeTC₄PCl catalysed by O₂ oxidation of cyclohexene under different conditions were studied, and three main products, 2-cyclohexen-1-ol (1), 2-cyclohexen-1-one (2), and 7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane (3), were obtained. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and the addition of axial coordination compounds on the reactions were investigated. The conversion of cyclohexene reached 94% at 70 °C after 12 h, and the selectivity toward product 1 was 73%. The geometrical structure optimization, molecular orbital energy level analysis, atomic charge, spin density, and density of orbital states analysis of FeTPPCl, FeTC₄PCl, as well as the oxygenated complexes (Fe-O₂)TCPPCl and (Fe-O₂)TC₄PCl formed after adsorption of O_2, were carried out using the DFT method. The results of thermodynamic quantity variation with reaction temperature and Gibbs free energy variation were also analysed. Finally, based on experimental and theoretical analysis, the mechanism of the cyclohexene oxidation reaction with FeTC₄PCl as a catalyst and O₂ as an oxidant was deduced, and the reaction mechanism was obtained as a free radical chain reaction process.

Insights into the effect of distal histidine and water hydrogen bonding on NO ligation to ferrous and ferric heme: a DFT study

The effect of distal histidine on ligation of NO to ferrous and ferric-heme, has been investigated with the high-level density functional theoretical (DFT) method. It has been predicted that the distal histidine significantly stabilizes the interaction of NO ferrous-heme (by −2.70 kcal mol⁻¹). Also, water hydrogen bonding is quite effective in strengthening the Fe–NO bond in ferrous heme. In contrast in ferric heme, due to the large distance between the H₂O and O(NO) and lack of hydrogen bonding, the distal histidine exhibits only a slight effect on the binding of NO to the ferric analogue. Concerning the bond nature of Fe^II–NO and Fe^III–NO in heme, a QTAIM analysis predicts a partially covalent and ionic bond nature in both systems.

Ordered Motions in the Nitric-Oxide Dioxygenase Mechanism of Flavohemoglobin and Assorted Globins with Tightly Coupled Reductases

Nitric-oxide dioxygenases (NODs) activate and combine O₂ with NO to form nitrate. A variety of oxygen-binding hemoglobins with associated partner reductases or electron donors function as enzymatic NODs. Kinetic and structural investigations of the archetypal two-domain microbial flavohemoglobin-NOD have illuminated an allosteric mechanism that employs selective tunnels for O₂ and NO, gates for NO and nitrate, transient O₂ association with ferric heme, and an O₂ and NO-triggered, ferric heme spin crossover-driven, motion-controlled, and dipole-regulated electron-transfer switch. The proposed mechanism facilitates radical-radical coupling of ferric-superoxide with NO to form nitrate while preventing suicidal ferrous-NO formation. Diverse globins display the structural and functional motifs necessary for a similar allosteric NOD mechanism. In silico docking simulations reveal monomeric erythrocyte hemoglobin alpha-chain and beta-chain intrinsically matched and tightly coupled with NADH-cytochrome b₅ oxidoreductase and NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase, respectively, forming membrane-bound flavohemoglobin-like mammalian NODs. The neuroprotective neuroglobin manifests a potential NOD role in a close-fitting ternary complex with membrane-bound NADH-cytochrome b₅ oxidoreductase and cytochrome b₅. Cytoglobin interfaces weakly with cytochrome b₅ for O₂ and NO-regulated electron-transfer and coupled NOD activity. The mechanistic model also provides insight into the evolution of O₂ binding cooperativity in hemoglobin and a basis for the discovery of allosteric NOD inhibitors.

DFT study of α-Keggin, lacunary Keggin, and ironII-VI substituted Keggin polyoxometalates: the effect of oxidation state and axial ligand on geometry, electronic structures and oxygen transfer

Herein, the geometry, electronic structure, Fe-ligand bonding nature and simulated IR spectrum of α-Keggin, lacunary Keggin, iron(ii/iii)-substituted and the important oxidized high-valent iron derivatives of Keggin type polyoxometalates have been studied using the density functional theory (DFT/OPTX-PBE) method and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The effects of different Fe oxidation states (ii-vi) and H2O/OH-/O2- ligand interactions have been addressed concerning their geometry and electronic structures. It has been revealed that the d-atomic orbitals of Fe and 2p orbitals of polyoxometalate's oxygen-atoms contribute in ligand binding. Compared with other high valent species, the considered polyoxometalate system of [PW11O39(FeVO)]4-, possesses a high reactivity for oxygen transfer.

Water binding to FeIII hemes studied in a cooled ion trap: characterization of a strong 'weak' ligand

The interaction of a water molecule with ferric heme-iron protoporphyrin ([PP Fe^III]⁺) has been investigated in the gas phase in an ion trap and studied theoretically by density functional theory. It is found that the interaction of water with ferric heme leads to a stable [PP-Fe^III-H₂O]⁺ complex in the intermediate spin state (S = 3/2), in the same state as its unligated [PP-Fe^III]⁺ homologue, without spin crossing during water attachment. Using the Van't Hoff equation, the reaction enthalpy for the formation of a Fe-OH₂ bond has been determined for [PP-Fe^III-H₂O]⁺ and [PP-Fe^III-(H₂O)₂]⁺. The corrected binding energy for a single Fe-H₂O bond is -12.2 ± 0.6 kcal mol^-1, while DFT calculations at the OPBE level yield -11.7 kcal mol^-1. The binding energy of the second ligation yielding a six coordinated Fe^III atom is decreased with a bond energy of -9 ± 0.9 kcal mol^-1, well reproduced by calculations as -7.1 kcal mol^-1. However, calculations reveal features of a weaker bond type, such as a rather long Fe-O bond with 2.28 Å for the [PP-Fe^III-H₂O]⁺ complex and the absence of a spin change by complexation. Thus despite a strong bond with H₂O, the Fe^III atom does not show, through theoretical modelling, a strong acceptor character in its half filled 3d_z² orbital. It is also observed that the binding properties of H₂O to hemes seem strikingly specific to ferric heme and we have shown, experimentally and theoretically, that the affinity of H₂O for protonated heme [H PP-Fe]⁺, an intermediate between Fe^III and Fe^II, is strongly reduced compared to that for ferric heme.
