Ozonolysis of 3-carene in the atmosphere. Formation mechanism of hydroxyl radical and secondary ozonides

Stability of Terpenoid-Derived Secondary Ozonides in Aqueous Organic Media

1,2,4-Trioxolanes, known as secondary ozonides (SOZs), are key products of ozonolysis of biogenic terpenoids. Functionalized terpenoid-derived SOZs are readily taken up into atmospheric aerosols; however, their condensed-phase fates remain unknown. Here, we report the results of a time-dependent mass spectrometric investigation into the liquid-phase fates of C₁₀ and C₁₃ SOZs synthesized by ozonolysis of a C₁₀ monoterpene alcohol (α-terpineol) in water:acetone (1:1 = vol:vol) mixtures. Isomerization of Criegee intermediates and bimolecular reaction of Criegee intermediates with acetone produced C₁₀ and C₁₃ SOZs, respectively, which were detected as their Na⁺-adducts by positive-ion electrospray mass spectrometry. Use of CD₃COCD₃, D₂O, and H₂¹⁸O solvents enabled identification of three types of C₁₃ SOZs (aldehyde, ketone, and lactol) and other products. These SOZs were surprisingly stable in water:acetone (1:1) mixtures at T = 298 K, with some persisting for at least a week. Theoretical calculations supported the high stability of the lactol-type C₁₃ SOZ formed from the aldehyde-type C₁₃ SOZ via intramolecular rearrangement. The present results suggest that terpenoid-derived SOZs can persist in atmospheric condensed phases, potentially until they are delivered to the epithelial lining fluid of the pulmonary alveoli via inhaled particulate matter, where they may exert hitherto unrecognized adverse health effects.

The oxidation mechanism of gas-phase ozonolysis of limonene in the atmosphere

Limonene with endo- and exo-double bonds is a significant monoterpene in the atmosphere and has high reactivity towards O3. We investigated the atmospheric oxidation mechanism of limonene ozonolysis using a high level quantum chemistry calculation coupled with RRKM-ME kinetic simulation. The additions of O3 can take place at both the endo- and exo-double bonds with a branching ratio of 0.87 : 0.13, forming four major highly energized CIs* (named Syn-2a*, Syn-2b*, Anti-2b* and Anti-2c*) with the relative higher fractions of 0.21 : 0.35 : 0.27 : 0.11. A yield of 4% for Limona-ketone was obtained as well. For the unimolecular isomerization pathways of limonene + O3 → POZs → CIs* → SOZ, VHP, or dioxirane, five, one, or none of the internal rotations are treated as hindered internal rotors for CIs*. We obtained percentages of 0.59 : 0.18 : 0.14 in total for separate isomerization routes in the formation of VHPs, dioxirane and SOZs from CIs* using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Additionally, a yield of ∼5% was acquired for stabilized CIs compiling the fractions of different addition routes. About ∼10% of stabilized Anti-2b would isomerize to VHP and 90% would isomerize to SOZs. Isomerization to VHPs dominates the fate of stabilized Syn-2a, Syn-2b and Anti-2c. The overall yield of OH radicals was 0.61. Our study suggested a yield of 0.17 for stabilized SOZs and 0.18 for dioxirane, although both their fates are ambiguous.

Quantum chemical calculations on the mechanism and kinetics of ozone-initiated removal of p-coumaryl alcohol in the atmosphere

p-Coumaryl alcohol (p-CMA), as the simplest lignin precursor, was determined in the process of lignin polymer degradation and wood smoke. However, its transformation and migration in the atmosphere have not been well clarified. In this work, the gas-phase reaction mechanisms and kinetic parameters of ozone-initiated removal of p-CMA were performed by using quantum chemical calculations. Seven primary addition reaction pathways were summarized. A more comprehensive and detailed reaction routes of the favorable Criegee intermediate (IM9) were presented, including the reactions with small molecules, as well as its own isomerization and decomposition reactions. p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde (P1) is the most dominant product in the further reactions of IM9 and the subsequent ozonolysis mechanisms of P1 also were elucidated. All thermodynamic calculations were investigated on the density functional theory (DFT) method at the M06-2X/6-311 + G (3df, 2p)//M06-2X/6-311 + G (d,p) level. The overall and individual rate constants have estimated by using the KiSThelP under typical atmospheric temperature (198-338 K) and pressure. The total rate constant is 3.37 × 10^-16 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 at 298 K and 1 atm. In addition, the atmospheric lifetime of p-CMA by ozone-determined is 1.18 h under the average ozone concentration of 7 × 10¹¹ molecules cm^-3. The short lifetime indicates that the degradation processes of p-CMA determined by O₃ cannot be ignored, especially in areas where the tip concentration of O₃ molecules is high. The present study provides a synthetical investigation on ozonolysis of p-CMA for the first time and enriches our understanding of atmospheric oxidation processes of other lignin compounds.
